U.S. Embassy opens in Jerusalem

May 14, 2018, 12:53 PM

"We believe, it is possible for both sides to gain more than they give – so that all people can live in peace – safe from danger, free from fear, and able to pursue their dreams." Jared Kushner at opening ceremony today.

Meanwhile, 52 Palestinians protesters were killed, 770 injured from gunfire by Israeli forces while protesting. This is so unnecessary.

Israel is annexing territory due to military conquest. And Israel is perpetuating the pauperization of Palestinians with callous policies. And the US is perfectly ok with it.

Until Palestinians are able to have a say in their own political futures this will continue to be bloody.

Israel is ethnically cleansing certain portions of the West Bank and "quarantining" Gaza. They know that once Israeli settlers move in and become established, it becomes impractical for the UN to make them leave. They have gained a LOT of ground this way.

Many in Israel (Netanyahu) see Palestinians as an obstacle for a "greater" Israel. This is why they are always testing the limits of international pressure. Move as fast as possible towards settling the whole area.

I'm not for randomly shooting innocent people either.. They have set up a "border" granted it's a border inside of their own country, for the simple reason that there is a Muslim extremist group on the other side of the fence conducting a violent protest.

They are tasked with protecting their own people while 35000 people try to bum rush their position in a violent protest, what do you expect to happen?

I don't pretend to know the answer to the situation, but Israel has every right as a sovereign nation to declare their own capital city.

Israel doesn't say that. A minority of extremists do.

May 14, 2018, 1:32 PM

While the international community regards East Jerusalem, including the entire Old City, as part of the occupied Palestinian territories, neither part, West or East Jerusalem, is recognized as part of the territory of Israel or the State of Palestine. Under the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1947, Jerusalem was envisaged to become a corpus separatum administered by the United Nations. In the war of 1948, the western part of the city was occupied by forces of the nascent state of Israel, while the eastern part was occupied by Jordan. The international community largely considers the legal status of Jerusalem to derive from the partition plan, and correspondingly refuses to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the city.

Status under Israeli rule

Supreme Court of Israel
Following the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel extended its jurisdiction and administration over East Jerusalem, establishing new municipal borders.

In 2010, Israel approved legislation giving Jerusalem the highest national priority status in Israel. The law prioritized construction throughout the city, and offered grants and tax benefits to residents to make housing, infrastructure, education, employment, business, tourism, and cultural events more affordable. Communications Minister Moshe Kahlon said that the bill sent "a clear, unequivocal political message that Jerusalem will not be divided", and that "all those within the Palestinian and international community who expect the current Israeli government to accept any demands regarding Israel's sovereignty over its capital are mistaken and misleading".[239]

The status of the city, and especially its holy places, remains a core issue in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. The Israeli government has approved building plans in the Muslim Quarter of the Old City[240] in order to expand the Jewish presence in East Jerusalem, while some Islamic leaders have made claims that Jews have no historical connection to Jerusalem, alleging that the 2,500-year-old Western Wall was constructed as part of a mosque.[241][242] Palestinians regard Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine,[243] and the city's borders have been the subject of bilateral talks. A team of experts assembled by the then Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak in 2000 concluded that the city must be divided, since Israel had failed to achieve any of its national aims there.[244] However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in 2014 that "Jerusalem will never be divided".[245]

International law/treaties/etc. say it's not Israel, and there is a debate within Israel itself, which is not settled. People may believe Jerusalem "should" be Israel's. But in reality, and legally speaking, it's not. That's why this move in so weird and obviously controversial.

men women and children from hundreds of yards away. And this land they are protecting they are still currently illegally expanding into land that is not recognized as Israel. And they are fencing off people's neighborhoods and depriving them of a chance to fix their own situation.

This is not a situation in which a terror organization is simply trying to destroy Israel. It is people being treated like cattle and they don't know what to do about it because all of the powerful nations never stand up to Israel. Terror groups take advantage of this, they don't create it.

with a lot of americans shows exactly why education about the jewish holocaust has failed baby boomers and millenials. Americans have thoroughly dehumanized Palestinians (Arabs/Muslims) and as long as they don't have to hear the gory details, they are totally fine with exterminating/ethically cleansing them.

They just need one or two sickos on Fox News to mention Hamas or terrorism, and they can sit back and casually accept mass murder and/or overt cruelty.

People have the most difficult time learning real lessons from history. The holocaust is important because that evil is embedded in human nature. Not because Germans are bad.

Alledged the US has support from some Arab governments such as Saudi Arabia, but I wonder how these events play on the streets in the Arab world. Sure there is some alignment with the US and Sunni leaders against Iran. But still remember how the 911 terrorists originated from our so called ally.
