Funny thought from many years ago...

Jun 29, 2022, 11:44 AM

growing up, had a friend who's family ran the Atlanta Golf Classic at Atlanta Country Club. This was a regular PGA event, all the stars played in it.
Since we were well connected, we got awesome jobs that week. From caddying for players during practice rounds (whose caddies had yet to arrive) to being the standard bearer (guy walking with group, carrying their scores). I caddied for Payne Stewart and Ray Floyd among others.
We were always getting the good groups, and on TV.
One late afternoon, players were coming in from their rounds. We were hanging around getting autographs, and up walks Morris Hatalsky. Kids asking for autographs, then his gloves, and the kid next to me yells "Hey can I have your clubs?"
He glares at ME and goes onto a long cussing rant about spoiled kids, etc. Something happened and i just snapped. I yelled "FU&K you Morris Hatalsky" Everyone heard, including other pros standing around.
And all heck brook loose. He raged and demanded that i be removed from the tournament permanently and be disciplined.
My friends uncle (tournament director) ran in, and grabbed us by the arm and took us in the clubhouse. We were scared to death. Once in his office, he glared at us and the burst into laughter. He explained how Mr. Hatalsky is one of the biggest d!cks on tour, everyone hated him.
Hatalsky missed the cut, and i got a bunch of high fives that weekend from other pros and caddies.

Good times.

The other day I was hitting a pitching wedge in the yard. I tee it off right by the house and aim for the power pole by the road. Well, this time, I accidentally got a hold of it too much and it bounced into the road and rolled right up into my neighbor who never wears a shirt and weighs 300+'s yard.

One time when I was in 9th or 10th grade,

we were hitting golf balls over a busy road where my buddy's house was. The yard was plenty big, so we were standing back about 100 yards off the road and hitting them over with a driver.

This obviously wasn't a good idea for many reasons, the least of which not being that there no view of what was coming from either direction other than the cutout where my friend's property was. Trees on one side of the property and a steep hill on the other. So when you made your backswing, you had no conceivable way of knowing whether traffic was coming from either direction.

This wasn't a big deal if you cranked a nice drive. It would simply fly right over the highway.

However, on one my drives, I made solid contact with the ball but realized as soon as I hit it that I topped it slightly. It was a screaming line drive that flattened out at about 3-4 feet off the ground. At the exact same moment, a guy driving a Mazda Miata or some such convertible (top down) came barreling down the highway. If I told you that this golf ball missed the back of his noggin by a foot, I would be being extremely generous. As soon as I hit it and I saw the ball sail and him driving right in it's path, I got the distinct sense that my life was about to change dramatically. I still don't know how I didn't peg this guy in the head.

If the golf ball didn't kill him, the collision certainly would have. SOMEONE was looking out for me that day.

Man, that's awesome, check this one out.

My grandfather loved to play golf and I loved to go golfing with him. So one time we went to Bonnie Brae (RIP). And we get there and there was the old clubhouse that was really an old farmhouse with old saggy wood floors chewed up by spikes (none of this soft-spike crap back then) and I got a soft drink and a pack of lance crackers and a payday candy bar and I thought it was really awesome.

Then I listened to my grandfather tell some jokes to the old guy behind the counter and he gave us our score cards and some pencils sent us out. Before we got all our stuff together and I got my glove out and wiped some dirt off an iron or two. Then it finally was out turn to go to the tee box.

My grandfather teed off....great shot, probably 280. I teed off...great shot...probably 190 (I was but a lad then). Then, AND THIS IS THE BEST PART OF THIS WHOLE JOKE, the golf cart wouldn't go.....THE BATTERIES WERE DEAD!!!!!....we had to get another cart.

OMG I tear up just thinking about it today....this story kills at parties too.

My grandfather also used to be a big golfer

Jun 29, 2022, 1:41 PM

Unfortunately, I never got to play with him because one day well before I was born, he was having a tough round...As he told the story, he hit the ball into well into the woods or something and broke his club out of frustration. However, he was a very rational man, as such he decided that if he really wanted that little white ball in that hole, he'd just pick the MFer up and go drop it in. So that's what he did, and never played golf again for the rest of his life.

That moment in time apparently killed golfing for generations in my family, as neither my dad or his brothers play, and I have never had an inkling of interest in it either.

attended a Clemson basketball game against some meaningless opponent. We were under the basket in the bleachers before the game with a handful of other students. Local sportscaster Stan Olenik walks in front of us and my roommate yells out "Stan!!!". Stan turns and looks at us with a smile and my roommate yells "fatass!".

my only golf story is walking behind John Daly at Greensboro

he was chain smoking the entire round and had the shakes (I assume from alcohol withdrawal).

That's it ... that's all I got.

I was at a practice round for Augusta

Jun 29, 2022, 1:53 PM

on 15, Tiger was on the tee, we were on the right side of the fairway, he hits it right a little and rolls close to us, so we run over and stand right by the ball in the 'rough' .

Tiger comes walking up, looks a the ball and us and says, "I don't have to hit if from here today." Proceeds to kick his ball into the fairway.

Cheater.

I once played 9 holes at the city course, and while it took me 5-6 shots for every other hole. I got an eagle on the 9th one! I decided to retire at the top of my game, because, when was an eagle on the 9th ever happen again?
