Once again money rules. In the not so distant past

Jul 2, 2022, 5:41 PM

college football had a great thing going. The SEC was strong, the Big 12 with Texas and Oklahoma was strong, the PAC 10 had some good members with USC, UCLA, and Oregon. Also, the Big 10 continued to be strong with Michigan, Ohio State, Penn St, etc. Add to that the ACC was much improved having traditional powers FSU and Miami and a MUCH improved Clemson. Then ESPN stepped in waving money. Signed the SEC to a very lucrative contract. Texas and Oklahoma’s ears perked up and said, “screw loyalty, money is more important.”

Bottom line is, as much as I hate it, we might have to do something. I just do not see how we will be able to compete in the future with the two mega conferences. So, what do you suggest we do? Conference expansions usually involve two teams. The most mentioned ACC teams are Clemson and FSU. Also, going to the SEC is so much more logical than the Big 10 for several reasons. Namely, rivalries, geography, travel cost, etc. the killer is the buy out contract we have with the ACC.

As if this is not enough to absorb, I think back to Dabo’s comments in previous years. He said, and I paraphrase, “The only thing that would make me leave Clemson is if I had problems with our Administration (President that does not support athletics or AD that I did not get along with), or if football is changed.”

We now have the transfer rule and NIL. I think this is more than Dabo imagined.

I'm thinking more and more that if this HAS TO happen, the BIG would be better for us and them. It would expand their footprint, and maket exposure, to the south, which they don't have now. For us, yes it would be more travel, but this would not really be a factor for football. Certainly, the BIG needs us more than the SEC does. Hopefully one of them wants us!

I tend to agree… B1G needs a VA, NC, SC, GA and FL presence***
