kinda' like 9/11. The thing I find strange is that we had another shuttle disaster in 2003(Columbia) and it did not seem to have the impact that Challenger had. Maybe because it wasn't broadcast live on TV or maybe we just had hardened a bit.

I agree. It wasn't as dramatic since it was on re-entry and we didn't really know what happened for a while, unlike the Challenger where we knew immediately and it was broadcast live. Both of them very, very sad tragedies. Space flight is never routine.

It happened on a weekend, that's primarily why

When I first turned on the TV that morning--can't remember offhand if it was a Saturday or Sunday--it took me several minutes to even figure out what had happened. And I was just casually flipping on the TV to watch with a meal. There was no sense of community tragedy because most of us were home with families.

I remember out of them pretty well. The “teacher in space” thing gave the Challenger a lot of pre (and post) launch publicity. While Columbia was essentially “just another launch” to most people.
I remember in HS someone saying the Challenger exploded and I though it was a very bad joke then I saw it on TV. I lived in TX and heard the sonic boom of Columbia after it blew up on re-entry. Didn’t know what it was until a little while later when the news picked it up. Sad on both accounts.

I lived in Ft Myers FL at the time, on the west coast of FL, and was in class, but my dad and also some friends who happened to be outside at the time saw it break up. We were too far away to know exactly what it was at the time, but they found out real quick. I remember watching it in my class after lunch, I think. Very, very sad day.

A bunch of us were watching on the TV in the student union

at Clemson. We were all kind of speechless at first, not believing what just happened. The really sad part was seeing the husband and two young children of Christa McAuliffe, the teacher chosen from thousands of applicants to join the mission, watch in horror as the tragedy happened so soon after takeoff.

because of the SC native being on the mission... that was a very surreal moment of disbelief, sadness... I felt as if I had lost a relative and because I have always listened to music and have the TV on but usually at a low volume, at the same time, there was a song that was playing when my mind came back to where I was, or maybe the song jarred me back into my reality because of the title, Someone Waiting Home (for me)... I still have the cassette tape that song was playing on...
those moments are burned into my memory...

Was supposed to be napping in kindergarten. Instead, my teachers found out I could cuss when it blew up and I said "oh S***". Oddly, that incident just made me want to be an astronaut even more.

was in my house waiting for the movers - was watching the launch on TV and saw it happen. Seeing the various emotions on everyone's face as they went from shock and awe to finally accepting it was hard to watch, especially the families of the astronauts.

I was walking out of Jervey Athletic Center. I had just finished my half day of work in the IPTAY office. The Legend, Frank Howard, was about to enter the building. He stopped me and asked if I had heard about the space shuttle...I had not. With tears streaming down his face, he told me that the Challenger had exploded.
I’ll never forget that day or how much Coach Howard was shaken by the event.
