CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- Tailback Ronald Williams and Clemson's defense picked up where they left off last year for No. 8 Clemson. Clemson is ranked ninth in The New York Times's Top 20. Williams, the 1990 Atlantic Coast Conference rookie of the year, had been plagued by injuries before Saturday. But he looked healthy against the Mountaineers, rushing for 108 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries. He gained 183 yards last year in a 48-0 defeat of Appalachian State.
The Tigers limited Appalachian State to 18 yards and no first downs en route to a 24-0 halftime lead. Led by nose guard Rob Bodine's 11 tackles, the Tigers (1-0) held the Mountaineers (1-1) to 2 yards rushing and 84 yards over all.
The Tigers have outscored the Division I-AA Mountaineers, 122-7, in their three meetings.
