No. 4 Clemson Defeats App. State, 40-7

Clemson, behind two touchdown passes from Mike Eppley, routed Appalachian State, 40-7, in the season opener for both teams today. Clemson broke the game open in the second half when Eppley passed 5 yards to the tight end K. D. Dunn to help make the score 26-0.

Eppley, the Atlantic Coast Conference's leading passer with 1,410 yards last season, saw only limited action the rest of the way and finished with 131 passing yards, completing 13 of 17 attempts.

The Clemson defense - led by the brothers William and Michael Perry - forced three turnovers and had two sacks. William Perry, the 305-pound middle guard, and Steve Berlin sacked Randy Joyce for a second- quarter safety.
