By the time Buck Belue piled into the endzone giving Georgia its first points of the day, the issue had long been settled. Only 9 seconds remained in the game and no one on the celebratory Tiger sideline even seemed to notice.
By that time, Clemson was perched cockily on a 12-0 lead, consisting of a Touchdown in the 3rd Quarter, and a Safety and Field Goal in the 4th. The Tigers converted their first possession of the 2nd Half into a 70-Yard Touchdown Drive, concluded with a 1 yard TD run by RB Lester Brown.
The Safety was Clemson's salvaged reward for another time consuming 79 Yard Drive that ended on the Georgia 1 Yard Line when Brown was stuffed by the UGA defensive line on 4th Down.
However, operating out of its own Endzone, UGA QB Jeff Pybrum bobbled the snap from Center, and was sacked in the End Zone by Clemson Defensive Back Eddie Geathers. The Tiger Defense was stifling all day, and the Clemson Offense held the ball for 21 minutes in the 2nd half.
I was working part time on the weekends for a local mechanic. His son came by and offered us two tickets and a parking pass about 10am that day. Changed clothes and headed to Clemson. The parking pass put us on Centennial just before you get to Avenue of Champions. Also had the best seats I have ever had for a Clemson game. I was in awe of what was taking place that day.
My boss played for Clemson back in the forties. He had a blast that day. It was his last Clemson game as he passed away the following Monday. I remember that weekend as if it was yesterday.
strange year Mickey Andrews was the DC at Clemson, played Georgia unranked, ND unranked both wins but the highest ranked team on the schedule that year was #14 WF also a win
