On This Date: 1971 Clemson- 3 (14)Duke- 0 Oyster Bowl

October 9, 1971
Norfolk, VA

“Oyster Bowl” game at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA to raise money for Shriner's Hospitals for Children.

CLEMSON UPSETS DUKE ON KICK, 3?0

NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 9 (UPI) —Eddie Seigler kicked a 39?yard field goal with 10 seconds left in the third quarter today as Clemson upset Duke, 3?0, in the 25th annual Oyster Bowl. It was the Tigers' first victory of the season.

Seigler's boot, aided by a stiff 15 mile?an hour wind, broke open a listless defensive battle.
Neither team could sustain a drive throughout the game. Duke's deepest penetration was to Clemson's 23?yard line. Clemson's was to the Duke 22, from where Seigler booted his field goal.

The loss was Duke's first in five games. The Tigers, who lost their first three games, now have a 1?0 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The Blue Devils were held to 11 first downs and Clemson to 13. Duke outgained the Tigers, however, 242 yards to 225. The Blue Devils also were hurt by turnovers — three interceptions and two lost fumbles. Both teams started slowly and could not get untracked. The game threatened to end in a scoreless tie until Seigler made his appearance.

This same year the Tigers won another “bowl” game winning the Tobacco Bowl in Richmond. I think the opponent was UVA.

Look at the crown on that field! We used to have a pretty

good crown on the field back before the Tommy Bowden years. I used to think crowns were used simply for drainage purposes but I was not surprised coaches used to exaggerate the crown in order to "run downhill" during the days most teams ran an option offense.

Not sure if the pic is from this game in Norfolk. Its Eddie

Seigler in 1971, but may likely be from a home game in Clemson. There aren't many pictures floating around of the 1971 team. I do remember something about Eddie Seigler possibly being Clemson's first soccer-style kicker so its a good picture

That pic is in Death Valley. We had shrubbery scattered along the front wall back then.

I believe Eddie Seigler was Clemson's first ever soccer style kicker. Big deal back then.

All I remember is the wind and the parade

Oct 9, 2019, 10:00 AM

I was in Tiger Band, and at that time we marched a military color guard (similar to
what the Pershing Rifles do at our games). I was the "lucky" person to carry the
American Flag. Anyway, that Friday evening we marched in a seven mile parade through
Norfolk. The wind must have been blowing 25-30 MPH, so the color guard commander ordered
all flags, except the American Flag, to order arms. But I was left holding up a large
3 by 5 flag marching into the wind. The two riflemen guarding the flag on both sides of
me had to lock arms behind my back to help me stay upright. Worst parade I was ever in.

The very next year the Dookies returned the favor and beat Clemson 7-0 at DV. I had a field level seat to the game and remember hearing the smacking pads. Ken Pengitore was the Clemson qb.
