The harsh reality of Clemson's 2021 downfall

Oct 25, 2021, 10:35 AM

All former Clemson players:

Our RB coach, in his first year, has managed to lose 3x WR's to the transfer portal.
Our QB coach has the #1 QB in the nation and a backup 4-star that are both incapable of playing the position.
Our OL coach has zilch to say as to why his legion of recruits are getting their @sses handed to them by a 3-man defensive front.
Our OC can't seem to understand how garbage his QB is, subsequently abandoning the run, our only weapon, d*mn near every game.
Our WR coach has a roster of 4-and-5-star recruits who can't catch the ball.

NONE of our coaches have any prior coaching experience.

Start doing the math, ladies and gentlemen. Good players DO NOT necessarily make good coaches.

If we're looking at who's capable in the trenches, we **** sure better start checking both sides of personnel.

The only coach on offense I hope we keep is CJ. The rest can go.

The running backs have been the only bright spot. Not their fault our OC refuses to use them.

I loved Tyler Grisham as a player but his hiring as WR coach has been a complete failure and IMO he should have been demoted or handed his papers after Saturday's game.

Streeter is a great coach. He's oversaw elite quarterback play at Clemson including the outstanding game by Cole Stoudt vs Oklahoma in the Russell. I'm afraid DJ is beyond the help of coaching.

Caldwell needs to retire but for the love of Pete he needs to be replaced with someone who isn't a former player. TE needs to go to WRs and we hire an actual tight end coach.

I agree completely....

Oct 25, 2021, 11:12 AM

Grisham is in a job he never really earned (just happened to be around when Scott left); Caldwell needs to step down no doubt and the calls for Streeter's head are misguided.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What QB has Streeter developed?

Oct 25, 2021, 6:21 PM [ in reply to Re: The harsh reality of Clemson's 2021 downfall ]

DW4 and TL16 were plug and play QBs who would have been great if Streeter had been in a coma since 2014. What backups have actually gotten any better with his coaching??? I’ll wait while you struggle to answer that.

If there were EVER an indication of how ineffective Streeter is, then tell me why DJU is still as tentative and “deer in the headlights” mediocre as he was in game 1?

I fail to see why you are upset that we lost #4, #5, and #6 on the depth chart to transfer in the RB room.

It's plain to see as the year has progressed that even Mellusi who had a strong week 1 is not the player that any of the 3 remaining youngsters are in the backfield.

Personally I'm glad they left because we were seeing too much of Dixon on the field and Mellusi would have been the same and without them leaving Mafah would still be on scout team.

"I fail to see why you are upset that we lost #4, #5, and #6 on the depth chart to transfer in the RB room."

1. Because no one knows exactly WHY #4, #5 and #6 bailed.....especially when we've NEVER lost this many RB's in one year, to a 1st year coach. Smells fishy, tbh.

2.How did we spend 3-years with Dixon, 2 years with Mellusi and 2 years with Dukes and NOT have any form of development, waiting in the wings? If we moved on to 2x true freshman and a sophomore, over 3 exp RB's, then either our coaching or our recruiting need to be looked into.

3. Dixon was the only RB to have positive yardage in the UGA game. The rest compiled a massive yard of offense, total.

Just saying:

We take smaller recruiting classes, lose numerous hi-caliber players to the transfer portal (yearly) take NONE in return, fill our OL roster with walk-on's, fill our coaching staff with former players with NO coaching experience and expect the HC/cheerleader to coach them into great position coaches?

1. The 3 guys currently on the field let every see why those 3 guys bailed. On top of that 2 of the 3 weren't doing what they were supposed to when they weren't in between the lines. We weren't given details if their troubles were away from the team or within the team, but we were notified that 2 of the 3 who left were not pulling their weight in some way.

2. Why would we need to look into our recruiting when we just recruited over all of our upper classmen as soon as our All-American RB left for the NFL? It seems that's exactly how recruiting is supposed to work. You have a stable of backups while your stud is on the roster and by the team he leaves, you better have more studs on the roster. Job well done on the RB recruiting and roster management front. Now we need to make sure we bring in 1 or 2 this year to fill out the room again, so we will see if Spiller keeps up the good work.

3. Our offense was terrible in that game as a whole. Dixon ran the ball once and got a first down. He proved in his next couple of games after that 1 run that he was worse than the younger backs. I would argue that his personality and abandonment of his teammates is one of the reasons the offense is struggling to find leadership right now. He should have been one of the strong voices in the locker room as a veteran to help right the offensive ship. Instead he bailed on his teammates in the middle of tough times.

I'm not going to tell you we shouldn't take larger classes.

I would question that the players leaving are "high caliber".

Show me the former walk-ons at Oline this season.

My argument was that going after Spiller at the moment is damaging your credibility on any other complaint you may have.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think your take on the RBs is a little misguided...

Oct 25, 2021, 11:09 AM [ in reply to Re: The harsh reality of Clemson's 2021 downfall ]

Mellusi saw the logjam and decided to move on and get more PT...its works out for him but not sure he would have added anything to what we currently have. He'd just be another guy in there.

Dukes only played at Clemson bc we had a late scholarship open ion that recruiting cycle. He's a solid player but more of a non-P5 guy or a lower level P5 school.

I hate that it didn't work out for Dixon but it is what it is. He had some flashes here and there but not sure he is any better than we have in Pace, Mafah and Shipley. Also, Dixon has had some attitude/team rules issues every year he's been here. He's been in the doghouse more than few times.

I agree with 99% of your post, but Chez left early on his own terms, had 149 on Saturday, and has 700 yards this year. About equal to our top 3 RB combined.

I love the guys we have, but we dabble in the running game for balance. If we would commit to the run more we'd be an ugly 6-1 or 5-2 right now.

I place the blame on our staff for not utilizing the running game more to ease DJU into his full time role, and to take advantage of the "structure" and "scheme" we've been seeing.

Other teams know we are committed to our system instead of committing to do what it takes offensively to win. They know we don't have the patience for a heavy run approach.

Just a humble opinion.

Yup!

If you're one of those people Dabo considers to be his friend, consider yourself lucky. Be very grateful. The guy is a loyal friend.

However, this is big-time cooked athletics. It's a business. It's tough.

I trust Dabo with the program EXCEPT his ability to separate business from personal. He has not shown that he's able to criticize and even sever ties with coaches who are his friends.

And as he won more, he has increasingly become less receptive.

I don't know how well he's actually looked at things and tried to improve them.

And 4 and 5 star recruits often wind up sitting on the bench because so called recruiting experts have no clue. Coaches are not doctors or miracle workers.

There is so many inaccuracies in your post that it diminishes your points:

Facts:
QB Coach is Brandon Streeter. Streeter has plenty of prior coaching experience:
2002 Charleston Southern (QB)
2003 Charleston Southern (RB/RC)
2004–2005 Clemson (GA)
2006–2008 Liberty (QB)
2009–2011 Liberty (OC/QB)
2012–2014 Richmond (OC/QB)

Streeter did not become a coach at Clemson until 2015.

OL Coach is Robbie Caldwell. Caldwell is not a Clemson graduate nor did he ever play for Clemson. His prior coaching experience is:
1978–1985 Furman (OL)
1986–1999 NC State (OL)
2000–2001 North Carolina (OL)
2002–2009 Vanderbilt (OL)
2010 Vanderbilt (HC)

Caldwell did not become a coach at Clemson until 2011.

OC is Tony Elliott. His prior coaching experience is:
2006–2007 South Carolina State (WR)
2008–2010 Furman (WR)

Elliott joined the Clemson staff as the RB coach in 2011.

The only hires we have that have no prior coaching experience is CJ Spiller and Tyler Grisham. As a group, this years running backs look the best they have since Dabo took the reigns as head coach. CJ Spiller's running back section is the only bright spot we have on offense and he appears to be doing a good job.

I agree that Tyler Grisham is inexperienced as far as coaching and the WR's are way under-performing. His hiring may prove to have been a bad choice but one bad year is not going to result in his firing.

It is probably time for Caldwell to hang up the whistle or be told to move on as he has shown an inability to develop talented linemen recruits into pro caliber lineman. The numbers speak for themselves when compared to other top college programs.

It may also be time for Brandon Streeter to move on to other pastures. Our whole QB roster seems to have the same problem with ball placement, anticipation, and accuracy issues - that is on Streeter to develop and it has not happened to the level we require.

As far as Tony Elliott - probably time for him to move on as well. He seems to have gotten too comfortable and that complacency has led to stagnation and lack of innovation. Unless Elliott looks to revamp our offensive scheme in the offseason - he needs to go. By the way, I hear there is another former Clemson player named Willy Korn that is a young OC that is lighting things up with his offense down at another school in South Carolina. If Dabo feels he must hire "Clemson men" good old Willy K. might be willing to come back to Clemson if the OC job opens up....

You’re gonna throw mud, at least do some research and content check. Not sure OL coach is a former player either.
