Starting a new stereo thread...

Apr 22, 2021, 2:45 PM

how many people still have a nice stereo other than Scooter? The house we just bought had a built in speaker set and a Denon amp connected to them that the seller left behind. So I hooked up an alexa to it. It doesn't sound half as good as the alexa I have in the kitchen connected to Klipsch computer sound set up I bought open box at Best Buy ten years ago.

Even after I hooked an old subwoofer to the Denon amp.

And nothing sounds as good as the pair of Sonos 1's I bought my wife 5 years ago when she was my girlfriend and I got tired of listening to music on her old ###### sony CD player/receiver/speaker combo set.

How are you listening to music now? I assume RH Tig has a pretty nice set up just because my uncle, who also plays bass loud, has put together a ridiculous stereo to accompany himself.

serious audiophile quality, really solid middle of the road gear. Technics receiver and turntable, Sharp dual cassette deck, Sony CD/DVD player, and the pièce de résistance: a working Panasonic 8 track player/recorder. I've got a couple of other receivers, a vintage Technics power amp, and a handful of turntables that I have inherited over the years but the big money goes toward instruments and amps to play rather than gear to listen. I've never been the audiophile type...I love music just as much coming from a battery operated transistor AM radio just as much as from a $10k stereo system.

Apr 22, 2021, 3:17 PM

I left out Cerwin-Vega speakers for stereo system. Picked those up on clearance from a local stereo store before it went out of business for next to nothing and they've been more than serviceable for somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 years now. Also still have a pair of Genesis speakers that I bought off a buddy at Clemson for next to nothing. At the time, they were a highly sought after boutique brand, and last time I plugged them in they worked fine. Had to go look and it seems they're still in business...which is good, given that they have a lifetime warranty. They paid shipping and replaced blown speakers twice for me back in my LOUDER more gear-abusive youth.

That's the thing about his set up...

Apr 22, 2021, 4:24 PM [ in reply to I still have a stereo set up, but it's not what I would call ]

its all sort of built by hand. He's got old speaker boxes from the 70's, but he upgraded the electronics and the speaker cones to modern and resealed everything to make it like new. He has pre-amps that he uses for playing live with a band that he ties in for cleaner power. He rebuilt an old tube amp. It sounds like it costed 50K but it probably cost him a couple hundred for the things he bought specifically for the stereo.

Supposedly the Genesis has an even wider range than the Infinity from whence they came, but I never had a chance to put mine side by side because nobody I knew at Clemson had those at the time. Heck, these days cheap speakers from Wish.com sound great in comparison because the technology has come so far that you can turn out great sound that only dogs can hear a difference in for far cheaper than you could prior to the tech boom.

Another old guy with old stuff

Apr 22, 2021, 5:07 PM

That still kicks butt

This is two channel stereo only... not home theater.

All tunage has been converted to FLAC hi def digital. Most at 42khz (CD frequency), some 96khz, a few as high as 192hz. For that reason, the head unit is a laptop

The laptop is connected to the preamp using a SCHIIT (yep, pronounced just like you think) DAC. Takes digital output from laptop and converts to analog for input to preamp using standard RCA jacks.

Preamp is Phase Linear. Output from that goes into active crossover made by Dahlquist. This electronically splits low frequency sound (read base) from high frequency.

The low frequency goes to a relatively modern Yamaha power amp... nothing fancy as it is only working with bass. Then on to a pair of Dahlquist D1-W subs.

High frequency signal goes to a Hafler D500. Sweet and clean. This amp feeds a set of Dahlquist DQ-10s. These speakers are 5 way crossovers that were hand built by the genius who worked at American Audio many moons ago.

Honestly, doesn't get a lot of play time anymore. That is what happens when one reaches a certain vintage.

Re: Another old guy with old stuff

Great gear. Your speakers are some of the best ever, heard them in a cabin once near Bryson City. Phase Linear is Bob Carver who is my audio hero. I have photos of us drinking beer from Clemson cozies.

Like you I mostly play tunes from computer as it is easy and sounds great. On the porch have a fanless computer and an external Benchmark DAC. I believe a better DAC is the best bang for buck one can spend $ on.

Re: Starting a new stereo thread...

Apr 22, 2021, 5:44 PM

I am an audio nut. I know some will see this post and ~~~
We all have hobbies. Better audio has been one of mine for decades.
Anything worth doing is worth over doing.

I play tunes on my porch most days. I can play movies or TV out here, but prefer tunes.
I have a high end stereo system out here that has changed often over the last years as I worked it out. I would improve but can not presently see how. Something will come along. Some claim you cannot do decent audio outside -> not true. I don't play to the yard, just to my old adirondack chair.

At the TV have tried the multi speaker things and sound bars but prefer stereo. I have a Carver Preamp, Sunfire amp, and McIntosh speakers that do not require a subwoofer. The sound is good.

My main system is in my RedNeck Bar, but like most, don't use it often. My speakers there retailed at $20K. They require lots of power to open up, but I have power using 2 Sunfire amps to send 2400 watts to each. No sub is needed, but I have a huge one.
My record player is a REGA I reworked with better sub platter, upgraded belts, and a Delphrin platter. The needle cost more than my wife's car - but she don't know that. I hooked an external quartz power source to insure perfect RPM. I use a Project two tube phono amp for it.

You don't go to the store and buy a system. You improve what you have over time upgrading the weakest link. The deal is entertainment. Sadly real Audiophiles and even audio nuts like me go beyond that. I don't hurt anyone, it is just a hobby. Guys pay more for stamps or rebuilding a GTO. One can do all, so while I don't get the stamp thing -- happy for them.
Vintage audio is a good investment as prices keep going up.

To hear a difference in a decent system and an audiophile system requires one to sit in the "sweet spot" and concentrate. That aint me as I like to drink beer and dance around. I do enjoy knowing I have decent audio.
