Ok, so have not lived in SC for over 20 years, but..

Jun 8, 2019, 10:14 PM

I do recall two things. Hammond used to be a private school, as my brother attended and played for one in Sumter, and used to have a horrible playing field, looked like a parking lot. So, my question is, obviously things have changed to some degree within the private school system, but is the level of competition that much better than it used to be? It used to be common knowledge that the public school system had much better athletes in years past, but I see Burch is from Hammond, Muschamps kid goes there, The new SC signee goes there etc. Has the game changed that much in SC? Used to be Sumter, Berkley, Conway, Hillcrest, Summerville etc were the FB powers in State.

Private schools are excelling in the 1A ranks

Most don't stand a chance against the bigger public schools.

Private schools are able to recruit kids, so yeah, they are

Private schools started offering scholarships

We played both side of the ball, had 34 kids in my class as a kid. Never thought we’d ever have a kid that would be on scholarship at running back for a D1 school let alone Clemson.

They frankly always have. My brother was basically a scholarship his senior year at Wilson Hall, and I was offered at Thomas Sumter. He went even though Tom Lewis pretty much guaranteed him a starting spot at Sumter High, to me a no brainer. I came close but ultimately decided to stay with the guys I had played with since middle school. I just remembered going to Hammond for my brothers game and the school and field were kinda scrubby. Thanks for the updates folks.

What happened to the push from some prominent coaches several years ago that students at smaller private schools and academies be able to play sports at public schools?

Home School kids may also play for public schools and participate in extra-curricular activities like dances and organizations.

It is rare to have D1 prospects at SCISA schools. Not a lot of high end D1 prospects that come form the Midlands of SC in any given year which is surprising to me. It will be a big jump from SCISA to Division 1 football.

Mikey has a lot of experience pass blocking and I’m betting will do well as freshman; sometimes the small program pays off. While other big school players only ran or wheel routed their whole high school careers.

I don't think any parent is satisfied with public schools.

Jun 9, 2019, 1:16 PM

I'm not sure public school teachers are all that happy with it. Private schools are offering scholarship for athletes and parents are all in with not paying extra for private education after paying taxes to support public education.

I am not saying the private schools have better teachers but the basic intent to educated seems more successful in the private schools. The outcome is the evidence. Public systems are broken and flawed.

Well, it's been 25+ years, but Hammond always had strong

teams, within SCISA, or PAC before that. But they also have talent to play SOME public schools and win. We regularly beat AC Flora and Dreher in basketball but we never branched out in football. But we always had a very good football team relative to the talent level at the school. Our o-line averaged about 260 or so back in the early 1990's. Same for DL.

Seventh Woods came out of Hammond, as did Jeff Scott. Most athletic scholarships go to schools other than D1, but some make the cut at the D1 level.

So to answer your question, no they're not able to compete against the best public schools in football or basketball, BUT they can compete against just about ANY private school and some smaller public schools. They have a better sports program than most realize, again given their size and talent pool. If I had to pick a private school for athletics, Hammond is up there at the top in SC.
