Does anybody still use Rotten Tomatoes as a guide to movies?

Nov 22, 2021, 2:59 PM

I stopped years ago, it just seemed like most of their recommendations were garbage. This confirms it... check out their "Best Movies Of All Time".

I do always just to make sure it's not a flop. I won't watch a movie under 60% on Rotten Tomatoes, and probably not even under 75%.

Also, I don't take their old school reviews seriously. Everything from 30's or 40's or whatever gets a high score.

yes, or even good old IMDB... but this Rotten Tomatoes list

is hilarious. I'm a movie nut and haven't even heard of some of them. It's like they just threw in a couple movies from the 30s, along with Casablanca & Citizen Kane... to appear legit. And then movies from the last 3 or 4 years. Who knew 2017-2020 was Hollywood's golden years? LOL

It still amazes me, for as much CGI and effects that there are now-a-days that the entire thing was shot on a sound stage with costumes and practical effects.

Would never be able to do that today. Not from a cost or visual aesthetics or desire. I just don't know if the Hollywood types remember how to do half that ####.

When we drink, we get drunk.
When we get drunk, we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.
When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let's all get drunk, and go to heaven!

I'll never forget how the original Star Wars blew us away.

Nov 22, 2021, 8:19 PM

We literally sat there in stunned silence for a few minutes after it ended. Like, what in the world did we just see? In two hours, special effects had just jumped way into the future... by about 20 years, it seemed. We immediately bought tickets for a later showing, grabbed something to eat, and sat in the parking lot smoking hash until the next showing.

I know younger folks can't possibly understand the impact of that movie in 1977. But special effects were fairly crude back then. You could see the wires holding up bats in horror movies, the rocks in Star Trek were obviously fake, etc. The best special effects, in general, were in the James Bond movies. Besides 2001, which was also way ahead of it's time.

Anyway, making Star Wars with the technology of the day is still amazing, with little models and camera angles and whatnot. And yes, Wizard of Oz in 1939 is mind-boggling... it's still fun to watch.
