Looking at the stats...this LSU D is the best we've played

Dec 15, 2012, 1:18 PM

this yr...

1. They've only given up 16.5 points a game...better than anyone we've played....FSU-17.5, SC-18.4
2. Given up 297 yds a game...better than SC
3. Getting 2.5 sacks a game which is just ok
4. 11th nationally in turnover margin.... 2.5+ for the yr
5. Very big stat....only allowing 4.1 third down conversions for a game...#2 nationally....SC was #40 in that category
6. Opponents rushing yards per game... 95 per game...#5 nationally

This is a very good defense...they play the run tougher than SC...are about the same in pass defense 202 yds per game vs 204 for SC.

Re: Looking at the stats...we're by far the best

offense that they've faced.

But, given the different scenarios under which the stats are earned, I'm not sure what stats actually tell you regarding how the game will play out on the field.

I think we'll have another opportunity to play well agsainst a really stout defense and I'm counting on us doing better than we did last time out.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

hopefully so....we need to establish the run early

Dec 15, 2012, 1:54 PM

so they can't just pin their ears back and rush the passer like SC could.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We established the run against Usuck just before we

Dec 15, 2012, 7:04 PM

abandoned it. Hopefully we don't do that again. Go Tigers!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we did and that was the confusing part of going away from it

Dec 15, 2012, 7:15 PM

we also went away from the short passing game...put our QB back there against those d ends to tee off on.

huh?

Dec 15, 2012, 7:36 PM [ in reply to Re: Looking at the stats...we're by far the best ]

Best offense LSU has faced was Heisman winner led Texas A&M.

Not statistically ... follow the conversation.***

Ok.

Dec 15, 2012, 10:35 PM

There's a difference in statistics because of quality of opponents' defenses. A&M is a better offense than Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Understood, but the thread was based on statistics

Dec 16, 2012, 7:47 PM

Statistically, we are by far the best offense LSU has faced just as statistically they are the best defense we have faced.

But that's why we play the games rather than just reading the statistics and assuming we know what will happen.

Spot the ball!!!

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Like what Will Harris of ESPN has to say:

Dec 15, 2012, 1:42 PM

Several edges have me leaning with an underdog Clemson team that has dramatically outperformed LSU in the red zone on both sides of the ball this year. A much-improved offensive line can stand up to LSU's tough defensive front in a way that past Clemson teams could not, while an LSU pass defense with fine season-long numbers has wilted down the stretch. A Clemson defense that is actually very effective on the majority of snaps has been hurt principally by the big play, and explosiveness is not the Bayou Bengals' forte this year. LSU had its sights set on a January bowl, and the ACC Tigers are far more excited about an opportunity for redemption against the SEC.
Clemson 27, LSU 24

bama's qb said LSU was the best D they played all year.

Great.

Bama beat 1 ranked team before UGA***

You also have to look at the offenses they have faced

Dec 15, 2012, 4:03 PM

they played one offense in A&M. They're god, but may not be as great as some think. They did give up35 points to Ole Miss and Ark had pretty good success on them. Also WV had 600 yards on them last year. Clemson can move the ball on them.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we can...it's going to come down to our ability to sustain

Dec 15, 2012, 7:00 PM

drives and keep our weakness (defense) off the field for long periods of time.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"WVU put up 600 yards on them last year"

Dec 15, 2012, 7:38 PM [ in reply to You also have to look at the offenses they have faced ]

The difference is LSU beat WVU by 26 while WVU beat Clemson by 37.

Re: "WVU put up 600 yards on them last year"

Dec 15, 2012, 8:48 PM

It goes both ways. You fail to point out the fact that Clemson's offence has played against inferior opponents while putting up great numbers. They don't stack up when they play quality teams. If you disagree, name a team where they beat a quality team?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we beat a good FSU team last yr

Dec 15, 2012, 8:50 PM

now given their starting QB was out of the game but who's counting....

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i'd rather face teams starting qb's, back-ups torch us.

Dec 16, 2012, 5:38 AM

we can make a 2nd string qb look like a hiesman front-runner.

They didn't finish in the top 20.

I think it's dumb to bring up last year, that's why I responded to him with that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I am hoping we win and hoping we don't embarrass ourselves,

Dec 16, 2012, 11:40 PM

our school and our alumni like last year. WVA had far better Offense. LSU has far better Defense. Can we win? Sure. Is Clemson O-Line better? Sure. Are Clemson D-Backs worst school history? Maybe. Will we be able to match LSU toughness? No. Will Clemson Defense and Offense quit again? We hope not.

We win game. Then we are national program heading into next year. We lose close. Nothing gained nothing lost. We quit and get hammered. Bye-bye recruits, reputation and more of our fan base. A lot riding on this game.
