Breaking News: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Just Proposed

Jan 27, 2019, 9:40 AM

a new tax on college football teams that win more than 10 games. She proposed that all wins over 10 will be taxed at 70% with those tax collections being distributed to "the poors" of the sport. Looks like good news for the Coots, they might squeak out a 10 win season now.

Because she’s openly admitted to being a socialist and elected to public office by idiots who produce nothing for society.

Google Venezuela right now to understand what socialism does to a country. Has nothing to do with her sex, race, etc... she’s just an example of how scary the future is with millennials electing public officials that have 0 understanding of our constitution.

Allowing government to redistribute wealth only adds to the power of the government, which is the real goal. Before you know it, you wake up and have zero control of your life and are totally dependent on the government which quickly runs out of other people's money. Every socialist nation has found this to be true.

Obviously a social democrat gave this a thumbs down.

How to fix democracy-

If you get more in benefits from the government than you pay in to the country in taxes, you don’t get to vote. When people getting benefits can overwhelm the vote of those paying the bills and vote themselves more benefits, democracy fails.

Democracy always fails in diverse nations

Jan 27, 2019, 1:11 PM [ in reply to Re: Breaking News: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Just Proposed ]

They only function well, in their purest form, in small countries where everyone is the same race, religion, morals, etc. If the United States functioned as a pure democracy, we WILL fail. That's why we are a republic. In form and function that is how we were created. Democratic, yes. But functionally a REPUBLIC.

Between the 14th and 16th Amendments, that balance has been shifted. We function less and less like a republic as time has progressed. Today states are limited in funds, taxing power, and their ability to function semi-autonomously. 50 distinct states, with the power to tax, make laws freely, and satisfy THEIR citizens, that's how you keep everyone happy. When Washington dictates everything, you automatically tick off half the people. Abortion is a good example. If it was a state issue, Californians would be happy getting abortions and people in SC would happy outlawing them. Want one? Go to California. Hate them, move to SC. Whatever. But make it legal everywhere, and that makes a lot of people unhappy. Gay marriage, same thing. Environmental laws, same thing. Regulations, same thing.

Our founding fathers never envisioned a federal income tax. And for a very good reason. States would tax, and then donate some, each, for the federal government to function. That greatly limits the power, and size of the federal government to a size commensurate with STATE funding. Bypass that and go straight to individuals income, and you are mitigating the power of the states to keep their citizens happy. So we're all unhappy. Conservatives. Liberals. Everyone.

Take a deep breath and think for a moment about your examples (and many other you could have mentioned) stating what "the govt" does for us. Now drink in another idea. If the govt ceased to create or maintain roads, would roads cease to exist? Would schools cease to exist? The question you should ask is who creates the best and most cost efficient (fill in the blank - roads, schools, etc)? If govt controls (fill in the blank), then there is no competition to improve (fill in the blank).

Not asking you to change your mind, just consider the thought. And don't feel bad, I voted democrat when I was your age too.

Private schools do well. Many roads are privately built.

Jan 27, 2019, 10:52 AM

The Feds build interstates, the States build State roads. All your local roads are built by private individuals or companies and given to the local municipalities for free. We build water lines, pay tap fees and give the water lines to the municipality to sell us the water that goes through the lines that we paid for.

This is a misrepresentation of what happens, especially for manufacturers. The state or local governments generally cover these costs or offer a FILOT to where they company doesn't lose money by building the infrastructure.

What percentage of US roads are private roads? What percentage of k-12 students attend private schools?

Re: Private schools do well. Many roads are privately built.

Jan 28, 2019, 8:20 AM [ in reply to Private schools do well. Many roads are privately built. ]

This simply isn't true. The feds don't build interstates. They authorize them and then states build and maintain them. Sometimes states seek federal grant dollars to build them. Sometimes they don't. But they're always state projects, which is why North Carolina has built Interstate 73 and South Carolina hasn't.

States maintain most roads. Municipalities have some roads, but many prefer to have as few as possible because they're so expensive.

Private roads aren't built much except in areas with major development. Local codes often dictate things like how a new subdivision must build its road. Since a subdivision only makes money once (selling the properties) it can generally afford to build the road, but not maintain it in perpetuity, so it will often be transferred to a local or state government. If a road is to be kept private in a residential area, the HOA must do it.

Some business complexes may build and keep a road since it will have continuing income. In SC, most counties designate private roads with a different color sign(green for public, blue for private) so you can tell how often you encounter private roads.

As for water lines, your statement makes it seem like that if a water line is built with public money (they're not all built with tax money) the water should be free. But maintaining a water system for 50 years is more expensive than building it. It needs constant repairs, the pumps have to run constantly, water storage must be maintained, treatment chemicals must be purchased, and the employees to keep it all running must be paid. Your water bill pays for operation and future capital investment.

I'm sure without the government, absolutely no one anywhere at all ever would be able to figure out how to build a road.

Or a cell phone, or a computer, or start a bank, or build a car, or design a vast international investment system that helps fuel innovative ideas which go on to establish organizations which create trillions of dollars of products and services that lead to vast economic prosperity.

Yeah, no way we could possibly function without the government.

I do not wish for my children to attend government mandated schools. I am the product of private school and a college graduate. i would love to get the money that the government confiscates from me so I could direct my children's education

As for Clemson, yes its a state institution that receives a very small percentage of all monies from the state.

Yes, roads are ONE of the things that governments are supposed to support.

If we could get government to do what they are SUPPOSED to do and not get into all of the things they have no business in, we would be a lot better off.

Re: au contraire mon frere

This is such a simpleton argument.

Clemson University wouldn’t exist without public funding nor would it continue to operate without federal and state funding.

Even most private colleges rely on federal and state monies to remain in business.

Jan 27, 2019, 11:22 AM

Do current oil prices impact how much oil a country has buried underground? Hmmm, I'll have to google that to understand the relationship between geology and economics. I never knew geology was dependent on economics. I always thought geology was about dirt, rock, and old stuff in the ground.

What you're saying is that Venezuela doesn't have tons of oil because of oil prices??? I know I have to be misunderstanding you. Please tell me I'm misunderstanding you.

Seriously though, since this post is on the football page of Tigernet (or was on the football page), I want to remind you that the OP was making a joke about how bad your football team is. Lighten up on this fine Sunday morning.

Why are you so opposed to logic?

You argued Venezuela was a wealthy country because it has lots of oil. It seems you don't understand that oil prices affect how much that oil is worth.

It's depressing that you're able to ignore logic on some strawman geology argument. But that idiocy explains why we have an idiot in the white house.

Good Lord man! You present no logic for your

Jan 27, 2019, 11:57 AM

argument... I'll give you mine.

I understand oil prices and the impact on the market as a buyer and seller.

I also understand that there has not been a successful socialist government in the history of the World. Ever.

I understand one of the reasons socialist governments do not work is corruption, as you've stated.

My argument is that Venezuela has the potential to be one of the richest countries in the World because of it access to oil (regardless of current oil prices-they have always been variable). Corruption and mismanagement in the socialistic government and the government run oil fields prevent success. Variable oil prices do not prevent profit from oil production or refining. These prices do impact profit margin.

To argue that Venezuela has a corrupt government makes my point that socialism doesn't work in SPITE of having natural resources that most governments make money with (re: Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey, USA, Russia, etc...).

BTW, Go Tigers! ;)

May 1, 2012, 5:24 PM

No, it literally is not.

You have absolutely no idea what socialism is.

Trust me, as someone with a bachelors and masters in Political Science.

Socialism is a failure. There is a reason that Capitalism has produced the richest, wealthiest countries in history. There is a reason that every year, more and more countries adopt a Free Market, capitalist model based on Globalism (Free Market international trade).

Also, to clarify, "Globalism" is not the same as "Globalist".

"Globalism" is an international economic model based on the American model of Liberal Economics (Free Trade/Capitalism), which uses economies of scale and comparative advantage to grow. "Liberal" in this case does not mean "Liberal Demcorat", but a form of Classic Economics that emphasizes free trade among peaceful, like minded democratic republics based on Democratic Peace Theory (aka "The McDonald's Peace Theory").

"Globalist" is an Alex Jones-esque propaganda term to describe how "Muh Libruls" want to push PC culture around the world.

I don't want either the rich or the poor to pay one more dime in taxes. It only make the government more powerful. The proper strategy is to reduce the size of the government.

Some people don’t live in reality. My tax returns this year are higher than I’ve ever had. I’m middle America who goes to work everyday so I’m not complaining. The problem with the younger people are they are brainwashed into believing socialism is the right approach because corporations are big bad people who only look out for themselves. They also hire 1000s of us and pay us every 2 weeks for working.

Try google... it’s a heck of a tool. Read a few articles about Venezuela to see how socialism works. Maybe we could send AOC there since the two share so many similar interests and beliefs. I hear Venezuela is a nice place to visit nowadays.

In typical liberal fashion, no response, just a thumbs down.

We need one with a fiscal conservative of the old Repubs and then Trump next to him. Repubs love spending now, but just on different things than people like Cortez want to spend it on.

Bad Analogy. Redistribution of Wealth in CFB happens

Jan 28, 2019, 10:57 AM

We do something similar already with the bowl payouts that each team agrees to when they join a conference. In the case of the ACC, all bowl income is split evenly between the 14 conference teams. It redistributes money paid to larger, more successful programs like Clemson to the smaller, less successful schools in the conference.

One question you might ask is why this is important for the league to do, and why it is important for Clemson to do. In theory, the redistribution should make the league stronger, and more competitive. Many people hate to think this way, but as a conference member, in a sport which favors strong schedules, would you agree that it is actually important to help our conference schools field competitive programs?

Debating what percentages we tax more successful people in order to make the collective nation stronger are appropriate. It is a healthy one to have, but I think it is more important for us to think about why we do it at all.
