Off season remedies to be back in CFP again

Jan 14, 2020, 1:00 PM

If we are going to make another run then we must do these few things.

1. Have more than just jump ball type receivers of the 6', 5" inch variety. Teams have caught on to this and it can be defended if the team is elite/very good in the secondary....
We drastically need a slot receiver to replace Renfrow. We went the entire season without one. No go to guy on 3rd down that is Mr. Clutch...... More speed instead of height. Fast route runners over the middle and the slant with yards after the catch. Didn't have it all year and it hurt us badly against a very good/elite secondary. It makes Trevor look bad but in reality there is nobody open.

2. The adjustments we made for losing our entire defensive line to the NFL worked against most every other team, but we're sorely missed not being able to get pressure on the QB with our 4 down lineman against an elite passing offense. We could only get pressure when we blitzed. Joe picked us apart when we blitzed. He would just throw the ball in the spot the linebacker or safety vacated. That must have happened 8-10 times.

3. Start a cornerback that will absolutely not let the wide receiver get behind him. I can understand giving up a big play once and getting burned, but not time after time. Terrell was plenty fast enough to not let this happen but was getting out positioned/out foxed over and over. CAN'T HAPPEN!

Do you think that year 2 or 3 Deshaun Watson would have done a better job last night than Trevor finding open receivers? Also in addition to a speedy slot receiver with good route running skills, one aspect that we absolutely need back is working the tight end into the passing game.

How do we know we don’t have a good slot receiver?

We threw to the middle of the field about 5 times all season.

No, I don't think Watson would have fared any better than Trevor did. Although Deshaun would scramble to give the receivers that extra 2 or 3 seconds to get open. Kind of like Joe did. DW also threw more pics.

4. Add the page to the playbook that incorporates the TE more consistently.

I couldn't agree more with points 1 and 2.***

The problem with your argument was we made the CFP's. We just didn't the job done.

We just didn't get the job done; typo error.

My guess is there will not be any major changes because the coaches know that LSU was one of the greatest offensive teams of all time. Look it up. As far as height of receives goes, you do realize that LSU's top 4 receivers are 6"4', 6"3", 6"3' and 6"1' and include the best receiver in the country this year. This was a once in a lifetime opponent and Coach V did the only thing he could because he knew we could not cover the receivers in a normal defense.

Trust the coaches.
