BV

Sep 16, 2019, 8:50 AM

I think this is the year where a major Power 5 program throws a ton of money at Venables to be their head coach. USC (the real one), FSU, Michigan? Any team with a defense like ours has a legitimate shot at winning a national championship. Forget the offense... just having a defense this good will put you in the discussion.

That said, I don't know if he wants to leave. His son is playing for us, which has to be a factor. And, he doesn't seem to be chasing dollars. After all, being the highest (or is he 2nd?) paid coordinator and living in Clemson has to be outstanding for his financial security.

BV has put on a show this season. I spent the first game wondering WTH he was doing. And the last 2 I've just been enjoying it. It's weird because I like watching our defense play more than our offense. You know every snap somebody is getting after the QB... it's just a guessing game as to where it's coming from. I love it.

I'm thinking NFL teams might be a bigger threat at stealing him.

The NFL is the last place that I'm thinking BV would go. I can't count the times that BV has stood in front of reporters and said that he doesn't like to complicate his or his families lives. Countless time he has said that he and his family is happy at Clemson, and that he loves working for Dabo, and I believe the reason for that is, BV loves doing what he wants to do with everything that concerns his defense and his defensive players, and working for Dabo he is able to do just that anyway he wants to do it. Bv will retire at Clemson if he is able to be his own boss with his defense at Clemson with Dabo as HC, and BV is elated with the situation of his job!!!

I sense CBV loves working with the kids. They are hungry to learn and eager to get out on the field and whup everyone's ash. Not so in the pros, where NFL teams have been infiltrated by a number of sorry, crybaby, whining, ashholes. If he is only concerned about $, I guess he'll leave. I think he likes winning more than whining. I think he'll stay.

You sound like me. I love watching a great defense and a defensive coordinator work more than about anything in football. Sure, I love to see Lawrence hit Tee Higgins or one of the other receivers on a bomb, or running the ball down an opponents throat. But, I love to watch great defense and the cat and mouse game of it all.
Surely, BV wants to coach his two boys. They are actually a little better than I thought they would be.

I'm a defensive guy, too. BV is the best. I don't see him leaving, either.

I still think that this offense is in "experimental mode" and that we are intentionally not showing our hand to avoid giving playoff teams good video. We are playing with "house money" and it kinda shows. That is the only takeaway I can see with the "not meshing" argument.

Defense: A+++++ with additional BV credit. As my son said during another redzone stand "holy molly"

Thoughts on BV:

I also think the NFL could be the biggest threat.

Hopefully Tyler Venables keeps BV here 4 more years after this one.

Not just Tyler, but hopefully the immense defensive talent in the 2020 class will keep BV at Clemson 3-4 more years min. He's got to be salivating at having that kind of weaponry all over the field.

It is great to see Henry finally show some of that ability

Sep 16, 2019, 11:43 AM

that got that five star rating coming out of high school. Hope it continues going forward.

Re: TNET: Second Look: Grading Clemson versus Syracuse

The offense at the end of last year certainly blew the curve. I understand this offense could look better, and very likely will. But when 600 plus yards and 41 points rates a B what do we expect for an A.

I'm actually encouraged by how well the backs are doing in the passing game and the tight ends I think have already come a long way. Everybody else in the country should be very, very scared.

Re: TNET: Second Look: Grading Clemson versus Syracuse

I think Dabo himself mentioned what it would take to get an A in this game. Eliminate the turnovers and better 3rd down conversions. To me, that really is the difference between a good performance and a great one.

Our 3rd down conversion rate is heavily impacted by ...

Sep 16, 2019, 12:49 PM

... the absence of Hunter Renfrow.

What was automatic in the past is now much more of a challenge.

I think it will come. It is still early. New team. It takes time to get to late season form. I trust Dabo and the other coaches to work it out.

No INTs, and no drop passes, and absolutely NO Fumbles, and that will be an A performance!!!

Running Game

Sep 16, 2019, 12:30 PM

Offensive line run blocking: C

For the second week in a row. When greedy for perfection, it’s the one concern I have right now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yesterday I was thinking about

Sep 16, 2019, 12:39 PM

all the Twitter tweets I read about the Clemson-Syracuse game . . . "pay BV anything he wants" ect. It occurred to me that BV is the 'Syracuse Whisperer'. Everything our defense did, worked.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It didn't feel as dominant on offense because we punted 6

Sep 16, 2019, 5:10 PM

times and turned it over twice. That's 8 empty possessions.

When those happen it gets frustrating. The biggest reason it turned into a blowout is because the defense got the ball back again and again and again.

We just got spoiled with Trevor chunking passes downfield and wr's catching all of them.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh yeah, plus one missed fg. So 9 empty possessions***

And for that reason the performance by the Offense feels like a C plus to me. Yardage numbers were great on Offense, but this team didn’t step up and impose their will against the competition. Big chunk plays had a lot to do with these stats. As for Special Teams, punting, punt returns and pressure on the other team’s punter are especially poor. Maybe we hire Bud Foster as an analyst after he retires. Other than Potter and kickoffs and field goals, we continue to be weak on Special Teams.

OCs / play calling not A worthy

Sep 16, 2019, 6:57 PM

The OCs job is to give our players the best chance to execute and it seems this year their play calling just doesn’t measure up to previous years. ETN needs to touch the ball more, intermediate routes seem too uncommon, the deep jump ball seems a bit overused; hopefully we will make some improvement starting this week but I don’t think TL is the only one “off” a tad. Doesn’t mean the coaches are bad and no one is calling for any personnel changes but we need to execute better offensively.

And our punting isn’t bad, it is atrocious for a program like ours.

BV is simply the best Coordinator in the business - Offensive or Defensive. I’m not sure there is a close second.
