OC Hire and Cade’s Heisman Chances

Jan 13, 2023, 11:24 AM

I’ve seen some comments since the OC announcement that this will improve Cade’s Heisman odds. Couldn’t find the original threads but curious on others thoughts and reasoning.

I agree it will improve his chances but still doubt Clemson will ever win a Heisman - at least while Dabo is here. Do you think Dabo will stop pulling starters during blowouts? I don’t and that was the #1 hinderance to DW and TL piling up the huge numbers needed to win at a smaller school like Clemson. Right now (and probably since it started) there is a huge media bias to large schools.

Unless Riley is blowing up 60+ points at half I just don’t see it. Maybe he can convince Dabo to change but doubt that even more. Without changing that stance it will impact Cade just like it did DW and TL. Not that I disagree with Dabos stance on that - it builds depth and buy in from those guys and helps you win championships.

The Heisman award seems to be limited to the best player on a limited number of teams. Riley has the mojo to bring attention to Cade assuming our offense blows up next year. Not say Cade will win but there would seem to be a better chance with Riley at OC pulling the strings.

DW threw 17 interceptions in 2016. That’s why he didn’t win.

TL got beat out by Burrow in 2019. No one can argue that. And objectively had a slightly off year in 2020, by his standards.

In neither case did they lose out on the Heisman bc Coach Swinney was pulling them too early during blowouts.

So LJ beat DW because he had 8 fewer Ints? Disagree. He won because he had stupid numbers.

Re: OC Hire and CK2 Heisman … Heisman is not a priority

You’ve made an interesting observation (starting QBs not playing enough during blowouts to pile up stats) as a quasi-criticism of Dabo.

If this is Dabo’s normal tendency, then why would he keep the starting QB in the game when the game is not a blowout?

The answers to both are obvious.

1. Dabo’s first objective is to win the game. If the game is close, then the starting QB stays in the game.

2. Dabo’s next objective is to give in-game reps to the starters ESPECIALLY if Dabo believes that the starter needs more reps himself. DJU clearly needed more reps.

3. Dabo’s third rated objective is to get reps for the backups. However, objectives 1. and 2. must be taken care of first.

(*). All three of the above objectives are more important to creating a sustainable winning program than keeping the starter (which will be CK2) in the game so that he can compile gaudy stats.

Not criticizing Dabo at all and in fact I stated I agree with him. Just offering it as a potential blocker for our guys getting the numbers they need.

Why is anyone talking about Heisman? How about we let that work itself out between now and next December.

Focus on winning and winning more.

Amen.
We shouldn’t be promoting our quarterbacks for Heisman until their Junior season. Not good to hype first year or, in Klubnick’s case, first year starting quarterbacks. It’s WAY too much unnecessary pressure and the it sure didn’t help our last two QBs.

Lamar 'Johnson,' was awarded it.

I don't think the size of the school has anything to do with it. I gave up on it being fair when Peyton Manning didn't get one. Imo, He was the best QB coming out of college until TL moved on.
