Ethical dilemma. Need advice.

Aug 9, 2014, 2:01 PM

First some background: I and/or my family have had season tickets to Clemson football since I was an infant. In all of my 46 years on this earth, I have considered Clemson to be a part of me, and me a part of Clemson. My dad, my brother and I are all alums (I have two Clemson degrees). I am pretty sure my kids will be as well. Needless to say, I have an instinctual attraction to anything orange - even more so anything orange and purple. By the same token, I have nothing garnet in my house - nothing even remotely close to garnet.

Here is my dilemma: My oldest is starting to participate in high school activities, which require wearing the school colors: burgundy and yellow. I know burgundy isn't technically garnet, so one could rationalize that it isn't the chickens' color. On the other hand, it seems to me that it is close enough to violate the spirit of the law, so to speak. While it may not technically be wrong, it does send a bad message. Those who don't know us may mistake us for chickens and think less of us. Worse yet, someone may mistake me for a chicken and therefore assume it is ok to be a chicken. That reminds me too much about causing another to stumble and having a millstone tied around my neck and cast into the sea.

I really want my son to participate, but I don't want to lose my soul. On the other hand, I don't want to be a legalistic fundamentalist and not allow my kids to participate in normal, fun activities. I really could use some advice from some fellow Tigers - it is a tough world out there, and it can be hard to remain morally and ethically strong.

Thanks in advance!

You've got to support your kid, no matter if he's wearing FSU burgundy or not. The effects of this crimson hue can greatly be offset by wearing a Tiger lid. White with an orange paw if you care abt clashing.....solid orange with a white paw would certainly be better, though. Stay scrong.

this is easy....the Cluckers do not own that color

Aug 9, 2014, 2:26 PM

like we do with orange. Do you feel the same about black also?

Chickens are the ones who get squeamish at the sight of the color orange. Clemson is permanently in their heads; we consume their very existence. But a color cannot affect a Clemson man. I simply do not associate the dark red color with SCAR, and nor should you. Heck, I owned a burgundy car for 10 years or so and it never even crossed my mind that it could be a Gamecock color. I have a few shirts that color. Nothing to do with SCAR. They do not cross my mind when I put one on, just as when I wear a light blue dress shirt, my mind does not turn towards the Tar Heels.

The color garnet, or burgundy, or deep red is not a special color like orange is. It's just a color like black, white, and every other one, and should be treated as such. SCAR is not worthy of even crossing your mind when that color is presented.

If you allow a color to intimidate you, you have lost the battle. Your son's high school colors are just that, HIS high school colors. Wear proudly.

Re: this is easy....the Cluckers do not own that color

Aug 9, 2014, 6:45 PM

I think you are correct on a few points, especially the one about the Chickens not owning the color. Perhaps the rest of the world doesn’t associate garnet with the chickens like I do. I suppose the rest of the world is pretty indifferent about the chicks. The only real disagreement I have with your post is over the “intimidate” part. I think the better word would be “disgust.”

Aug 9, 2014, 2:35 PM

Just wear yellow. You will be supporting your kid's school without wearing the 'other' color

I like the adhesive tiger paw idea-i had to go to graduation

down there and I wore a tiger paw on the hem of my dress. And I also think the post saying they're not worth the color meaning anything is right-tho I too have no garnet in my house or clothes or flowers!

My son (baby) is a Sr @ Clemson this year. He goes to lawschool next year about this time. There's a high probability that he'll go to USuCk, perhaps even UGAy.

Right now only one thing is for sure, he's not about to give up his goal because Clemson doesn't have a lawschool.

Since he was born during my Jr year at Clemson I'm doubting he'll ever pull for either of those teams. Either way I'm not pulling against the boy or discouraging him.

Life is about more than Clemson! Let your children be children and make their life choices, even if it means pulling for South Carolina. They will be happy and you will be happier that you let them become adults with your blessings and support. This may surprise you but someday when you die, no one will care whether your wore orange or garnet. St. Peter will not ask you (even though he wears orange under that white robe)anything other than if you believe!

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They make medicine for that.

Aug 9, 2014, 6:10 PM

My recommendation...balance. It's the key to everything. You get him in orange on fall Saturdays and get him enrolled 4 years from now. The rest will take care of itself.

I do wonder though...didn't you foresee this coming. I mean didn't you know the local school colors ahead of time? Sounds like poor planning.

I am kind of surprised at the number of folks who don't seem to realize this was written tongue-in-cheek. It is all in good fun. While I don't have anything garnet, I certainly wouldn't forbid my kids to wear their HS colors nor would I refuse to wear them!

Buy shirts with the school logo and you won't have to worry about it. It will be obvious who you're supporting.

I don't allow garnet in my house either. I don't even wear any shade of red or black during football season. My kids are young and all in rec youth sports. So on occasion we have to deal with some color issues. We manage.

For perspective ... my husband, raised a tiger, bleeds orange, CU graduate class of 94 ... went to Sumter High. Ugh! Can you imagine?

LOL...moved to GA about 6 years ago. I work with a guy from England. His son plays little league baseball (teeball) and he told me that his son's team was Clemson. They each got to play in a college uniform.

When he told me this I said...this isn't going to end well. He didn't understand what I was talking about. About midway through the season he came to my office and said he now understands...and the league director has agreed it was a stupid idea and he'd never try it again.

On the brighter side, his son is now a Clemson fan.

Aug 9, 2014, 10:31 PM

Funny. One year, my son's basketball league had a "Gamecocks" team. Thankfully, he wasn't on that team. The next year when we signed up, I made sure they understood that my kids couldn't play for the "Gamecocks".

Funny thing: Here in NC, they will name team for the NC schools, but they know to stay away from Clemson - Chickens!
