Observations On last Night"s Game

Apr 18, 2017, 7:00 AM

1. I know he works for nothing but the third base coach has to go.
2. The only person our pitching fooled during the weekend was our catcher
3. Too many lob
4. Beer and Rohlman were the only consistent hitters
5. There I said it

Ponder hit pretty well and
Greene was very, very consistent. Consistently bad!

LOL

I mean it sucked to lose the series but jeez it was at a tough place to play, FSU is finally healthy, and the team is freaking 30-7. I'll wait before I call for jobs and throw players under the bus.

Still should have won 2 of 3. Pitching staff only

Apr 18, 2017, 8:54 AM

Gave up one earned last night. Yep 6 unearned runs, that's incredible. Its hard to allow a team 6 unearned runs.

well 2 earned runs. Both runs Henny gave up were earned.

1. It was a baseball game.
2. FSU was especially inspired as they are in danger of missing the NCAA for the first time in 39 years.
3. Despite numerous errors and bad decisions, we lost by 1 run.
4. 95% of posters on TigerNet know absolutely nothing about the sport of baseball.

Yeah last night was probably one of our worst performances of the year and we still only lost by one run. Clean the errors up and we should be okay.

I am still optimistic but they are going to have to earn these wins over the next few weeks.

We are in the hardest part of the schedule. Clean up the mistakes and we will be fine. The key is winning 2 of 3 games in next ACC series.

What percentile do you fall in? I will match my knowledge against yours any day. Our team has some serious weaknesses and we have been dog lucky so far. I live in real-ville!! I still say the third base coach needs to go!! He has consistently made bone-head calls waving runners instead of holding them. Last nights wave may have cost the game. If Rohlman had been held at third as I remember it would have been bases loaded and no outs!! This now makes the sac meaningful. Now who is the baseball genius? you or the third base coach? Ole Dizz would have said this ain't horse shoes close don't count and there ain't no substitute for winning!!

Re: Observations On last Night"s Game

Apr 18, 2017, 9:33 AM

Shooters shoot. That's the mentality I want my third base coach to have. I'd probably throw the breaks on Rohlman most of the time, but he's got the stones to send him in a tight game. If Rohlman had scored we would be praising Starbuck.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

if you knew baseball like you say

Apr 18, 2017, 10:58 AM [ in reply to Re: Observations On last Night"s Game ]

you wouldn't want coaches fired from a team that has won something like 24 of 28 games. It's baseball, teams lose a series or two sometimes. Starbuck sent Byrd home on a risky play Saturday, but he was safe. 6 more runs crossed that inning after that play. Was that a stupid call too?

Monte - and his staff - have won how many one-run games?
For the record, they are now 7-1 this season in one run games. Clemson was way, way overdue to lose a tight one.

Yet, it sets off panic from the ones that have no perspective on how this sport works. Calling for a coach to be fired is absolute lunacy defined.

well, your knowledge comes up short in thinking the 3B coach "works
for free". volunteer coach doesn't mean free... it means he gets paid thru outside funds, like camp revenue.
and FWIW, starbuck is a class guy and well respected in coaching circles.

coach starbuck, yeah that is his name, for all of you idiots that dont seem to even know it, has forgotten more baseball than most of you goobers will ever know. he is very well respected. coach lee has always been a very aggressive coach. better get used to it.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Observations On last Night"s Game

Apr 18, 2017, 9:39 AM

I do believe Starbuck was the third base coach last night. He did not call time to run to the bench to ask Coach Lee if he wanted to wave him in. That call was totally the third base coach's responsibility. There is a difference in being aggressive and stupid. Rohlman was not at third yet and the ball was well on the way to the plate. Please go figger.

As a rule, you don't make the first out at home plate!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Observations On last Night"s Game

Apr 18, 2017, 1:28 PM

Never heard of that rule, thought it was you dont make the 1st and 3rd out at 3rd.

Took a perfect throw from right field to gun down Rohlman

Apr 18, 2017, 11:28 AM [ in reply to Re: Observations On last Night"s Game ]

I like the aggressive base running forcing the outfielders to make perfect throws.

If we score there, the game is totally different.

As the rest of the inning played out, if Rohlman stayed on 3rd, he would have been stranded anyway.

Re: Took a perfect throw from right field to gun down Rohlman

Apr 18, 2017, 12:09 PM

You don't know that. NO outs bases loaded completely changes the way a pitcher has to pitch, the way the infield has to play (in) and the outfield (shallow) also.A bunt maybe scores a run or a hit in the gap scores two maybe three runs. All I am saying is you must take advantage of every opportunity presented by playing smart.

Just an after thought Rohlman was out. It was in no way close as some have suggested.

Re: Took a perfect throw from right field to gun down Rohlman

Apr 18, 2017, 1:39 PM

Rohlman was out by a mile never should have sent him. Not like it was a deep throw either from RF.

Bottom line is if any of our SP got past the 6th inning the series would have been different.

It cost us on Friday night having Barnes get knocked out so early then every other pitcher after him went out quickly too. Henny, Beasly, and Crawford were knocked out quick. Had to play catch up the rest of the series our of the pen like Schnell going 4IP on Saturday. Williams & Cox are struggling even tho Williams got a HR thats about all he did this weekend, and since when can Williams not catch the ball anymore?

Greene is as cold as he was hot a few weeks ago. I have 0% confidence in him at the plate right now he honestly looks scared the way he moves his body on inside curve-balls.

Beer man is he on fire so great to see him back in 2016 form, to bad Rohlman is the only other consistent hitter this weekend.

Krall, Barnes, & Eubanks all had terrible starts giving up multiple runs in the first few innings.

Our Defense is just bad and inconsistent.

Beer needs to stay in the 4 hole, having Davidson & Williams sandwich him in the lineup.

Speaking of line up when are we gonna get set with a final line up? Half way thru the season and still cant get the line up straight. Would be nice if we had the same 3 outfielders for all 3 games. I realize CML is trying to get the pitching match up with Wharton vs LHP and Jackson vs RHP but neither seems to work. What ever happened to KJ Bryant? Started the season and has yet to be heard of since. Hes still has a better BA then Jackson, also with Jolly hitting at .351 why not have him DH and have Beer and Rohlman in the corners?

Well im just thinking out loud hope I dont fall into the 95% of Tnetters not knowing the game of baseball...

Apr 18, 2017, 2:53 PM [ in reply to Re: Took a perfect throw from right field to gun down Rohlman ]

Agree he was out by a mile. But IMHO he was so clearly out because the RF made a perfect throw.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The Rightfielder made a tougher, perfect throw to second

Apr 18, 2017, 3:11 PM [ in reply to Took a perfect throw from right field to gun down Rohlman ]

that would have nailed Rohlman, if the ball wasn't dislodged right before he was thrown out at home.

That throw was running towards the foul line turning and throwing back to second.

We should have known the rightfielder had a good arm from a couple of batters earlier that inning.

Aggressive baserunning is fine, but know the outfielders' arms and the situation.

Re: The Rightfielder made a tougher, perfect throw to second

Apr 18, 2017, 7:00 PM

I agree. Risky sending him with prior evidence that the RF was capable of a great throw. Still, (as things turned out), Rohlman gets stranded at 3rd if he is held.

Re: Observations On last Night"s Game

Apr 18, 2017, 12:39 PM [ in reply to Re: Observations On last Night"s Game ]

That's what I've heard as well. I've heard he helps the hitters in ways most coaches just can't. I've also heard most of the guys, when they are struggling, go to him to ask him what they should tweek. He's much more of a coach than just a third base coach. Now hes made some questionable decisions sending runners, but last night wasn't one of them.

Re: Observations On last Night"s Game

I just hope the pitching doesn't fall apart during this last stretch of the season which would probably mean in the post season also.
We have enough hitting to score 6 runs a game but not much more than that.
One positive from the Weekend, Beer is killing the ball .

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Observations On last Night"s Game

Apr 18, 2017, 1:52 PM

until yesterdays game Tigers were undefeated when scoring 5 runs or more.

If the starting pitching holds up then we should be good but Eubanks and Barnes giving up 6 runs before the 5th inning is hard to comeback from.

The starting pitching was bad it appeared as if non of the 3 starters had there usual stuff and command on the ball so many walks and believe we had 3 BB that were 4 straight balls.

Hard to win games when the other team scores, 10,7 & 7

FYI not sure if you guys knew this or not since the sky is falling for some of you but it was our first ACC series loss, and our ONLY 2nd series loss of the season. Not too bad.

a nice 4-1 week will do us great against the pups and deac's

Also WF is very good rpi has them @ #10. Last I looked WF leads the ACC in HR's so Barnes, Eu, and Krall need to get the command back! Or else hope the wind is blowing in!

KRALL HAD A 1.50 ERA IN HIS LAST 4 GAMES. GUESS WHAT IT WAS LAST NIGHT. 0.00. IT WASNT ON KRALL. WE JUST SCUFFLED AROUND TO MUCH. HOW MANY TIMES YOU THINK THAT WILL EVER HAPPEN TO WILLIAMS AGAIN.

After 40

Apr 18, 2017, 2:11 PM

Games pitching arms begin to tire. Early in the season, no problem. I posted several weeks ago that this would happen. Using your ace pitchers deep into games to beat inferior opponents works only if you have a lot of quality arms. Clemson doesn't. Few do!

But, I'm one of those 95 percent who knows little.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: After 40

Apr 18, 2017, 2:13 PM

To add to that..... now we are facing UNC and Lville and wf at the end of the season and going into the post season with a much lesser rested staff. Hope it works!
