Observations from the game

Sep 9, 2018, 11:48 AM

Happy with the win. Props to TAM and their players. Jimbo had a good plan, and one I suspect he's been crafting since spring. Leave no doubt, they had this game circled.

I suspect TAM finish 2nd in the West. Especially if they can play that well most of the season. TAM also has tons of talent already to finish that high in the conference.

- I'm usually quiet on the penalties front, but good lord our D Lineman were held a lot last night. We got it back with the touchback call though.

- I didn't see as many blitzes and twist as I normally see from Veneables. Not a lot of LB blitzes either.

- It sure seemed like were were playing some weird zone defense. One that let TE's, especially, run free over the middle of the field.

- Did we throw 1 pass to a TE last night? Will they ever get involved in the pass game again?

- Tee Higgins catch sure reminded me of Mike Williams...

- Trevor Lawerence is not as immobile as Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, but he's not even close to Kelly Bryant when it come to running the ball.

- Kendrick Rodgers is the real deal. Had a 120 yards receiving, but it felt like 200. Kellen Mond ain't half bad either. Those 2 will give teams fits this year.

- No turnovers to start the first 2 games is a good sign. However, it's also a by product of being conservative. Need to keep that going, but also need to take a few more chances.

- Biggest disappointment was the bad snap with the Jumbo package (Wilkins & Lawerence) in. I was so excited to see us score like that.

both bad snaps were freaky. Shotgun was weather but when you cant do a conventional snap in short yardage that is really poor. it is something we need to fix as we will need the jumbo package. also some short yardage stuff was just very poor

A&M has to play at Bama, at Miss St, and at Auburn

Sep 9, 2018, 11:53 AM

they do get LSU at home and drawing SC and Kentucky from the East isn't too bad, but i don't see them finishing 2nd in the west. I'm still assuming Auburn is better than A&M until i see a few more games to suggest otherwise, and i think Miss St is pretty legit this year too. And LSU is honestly pretty solid. They still aren't great offensively, but their defense is nasty.

The SEC West is really good again and it's not just Bama this year.

SC would finish 6th in the West. They should be ecstatic to play such a weak schedule this year. Florida and Tennessee are terrible.

they were determined to

go with the screens and drags to establish the downfield...it almost didn't work, had we gone up 21-3, that game never gets back to within 14 point lead and could have led to a blowout. They also tried to run counter a while but that didn't work. I expect to see a lot of screens from teams this year to attempt to mimic AM results.

I wish we'd run more screen and drag routes in addition to getting TE's in the seams. The opportunities are there and if we're going to play Richard and not even attempt to throw to him we may as well just roll with 6 linemen.
