NPR is reporting that Academy officials asked Will Smith to

Mar 30, 2022, 8:05 PM

leave the ceremony after he hit Andrews, South Carolina native Chris Rock. Smith refused to leave and eventually accepted his Best Actor award.

The Academy will pronounce discipline on April 18. I wonder if this latest tidbit will add to the punishment. I mean on top of hitting a presenter, shouting out the things that he shouted twice, and then refusing to leave the premises.

Chris Rock took that shot like a champ... I wish he would've come back with a haymaker.. some may say he crossed a line but I thought he was hilarious

Agree, I thought the joke was fine. He and others were

Mar 30, 2022, 8:19 PM

making jokes about all of the stars and none reacted this way. I could see if Pinket-Smith looked disfigured or bad because of her condition. Quite the contrary, she is very attractive and the haircut looks nice. Rock wouldn't have made that joke if it was otherwise.

Ehhh, making fun of a medical condition that causes change to someone's physical appearance in a professional field that prioritizes physical appearance - and especially is know to be fairly punitive towards actresses of a certain age. Yeah, even for Rock that was a bit out-of-bounds. Even actresses that choose to cut off their hair for a role (like GI Jane) some have pointed that the decision has some serious consequences on their career.

I don't condone Smith's actions but I respect his choice there. I know they have a odd relationship but still, their choice. Knowing you are going to be walking into a field of crazy minefields, just don't do it. If anything, I thought Rock was kinda bombing, so the Smith slap took over the narrative rather than another meh hosted event.

Side note. My wife has vitiligo and it is visible on her face. She works in the media realm. If someone else within her profession was mocking that condition or really the result of that condition, I know I would not say the joke was fine. I know that some in her profession have even told her face is "uncomfortable" to look at. So it isn't just a joke as it does affect people's livelihood.

We’re in a world of Riff-Raff personalities (talent or not) and Twitters who think

their thoughts & values are the norm and interesting.

Saying, seems about everyone has too much time to spat off their personal & one-sided opinions (me included) when most of us need to get a job or do something constructive.

Does anyone in the World work a job anymore?!

Just reading host Wanda Sykes wasn't pleased with it at all.

Yea, because I really care what Wanda Sykes thinks about anything.

Blah, blah, blah, Chris Rock should have gotten punched and it was probably all fake, anyway.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

I figured most here were more objective.

without this controversy I would not have even known the Academy Awards were on the other night.

Not a fan of these type of award shows on TV.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I used to never miss them, but for the last 12 years or so,

Mar 30, 2022, 9:02 PM

I rarely watched, or just check to see if I happened to land on a big award, or funny comedian. This year, I was just spot checking and knew it must be close to the major awards and just happened to catch this incident live. The Oscars, like many other things, such as Miss America, the political conventions, just seem to have gotten smaller over the years. I know they are not physically smaller, but they used to seem bigger than life. They haven't seemed that way for a long time. Sometimes too much of a peek behind the curtain is not a good thing.
The Oscars seemingly have gotten less and less prestigious over the last few years. This junk Monday night really just took any little bit of mystique it had remaining. And why are you so cheap that you have a stage that anyone can just stroll up on without even going up a few stairs. That was just bush league. I can tell you that these events that used to mean so much back in the day, mean very little to the youth of today. It means zilch to teens and twenty year olds.

There is no talent in Hollywood anymore. All the great actors, actresses, directors, screen writers and composers are long dead. Today’s “celebrities” can’t act, sing, direct or write.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think it was faked

Mar 30, 2022, 8:41 PM

There are slo-mo's and still frames available that show Chris Rock bracing, leaning in, and grimacing before the slap ever landed. And then in reality the slap pretty much just grazed his face and he did the rest.

Re: I think it was faked

Mar 30, 2022, 8:59 PM

Yeah. That’s what you do when someone goes in to slap you.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe if you're in a slap fighting match and know it's coming...

Mar 30, 2022, 10:06 PM

Chris Rock supposedly had no idea what Smith was doing. He was braced and grimacing before Will started the slap. It was planned.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It wasn't fake. You will see when the discipline is handed

Mar 30, 2022, 10:36 PM

of sorts with that kind of live presentation and the size of the audience. Taking the stage and striking the speaker is terrible form. I've enjoyed a lot of Will Smith characters in my time, but he should suspend himself from Hollywood or similar for a few years or more for something like that. That could set a dangerous precedent if there isn't some kind of significant consequence.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

https://kareem.substack.com/p/will-smith-did-a-bad-bad-thing?s=r

When Will Smith stormed onto the Oscar stage to strike Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife’s short hair, he did a lot more damage than just to Rock’s face. With a single petulant blow, he advocated violence, diminished women, insulted the entertainment industry, and perpetuated stereotypes about the Black community.

Have Mike Tyson present next year and tell the same joke <img border=">

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Think about this:

Mar 31, 2022, 7:40 PM

Suppose Rock had targeted Nicole Kidman with a distasteful cutting joke … she was right there in front too…with Keith Urban.

If defending the wife’s honor was in play there, can you imagine Urban hitting Chris Rock?

What does it say that Will Smith stayed there and then later was given an award and the stage/forum to speak?
