Now that Syracuse/ND/Pitt have joined the ACC

Oct 3, 2013, 10:39 AM

Y'all think we might get a varsity Lacrosse team? I know we have a club team cause they would practice at the same time that we would when I played club football, but now that we have more ACC schools with the sport would we consider getting into it? I know Duke usually has a good team, and I'm assuming that UNC, BC, Cuse, ND, VT, VA, and Pitt also have them?

Just curious on y'all's thoughts, I honestly don't have an opinion one way or another on this one

We would have to add another women's sport, which

they could just add a woman's lacrosse team as well. I agree I think Clemson should have lacrosse as a varsity sport even though I do not know the first thing about lacrosse, but we should still have one.

Gah man, freaking title 9

Oct 3, 2013, 10:49 AM

it's a joke. Go to a women's basketball game sometime, it's ridiculously lame. We would always use to laugh at the promos they did for it, using footage of men's bball games in there hahaha.

Except for volleyball, I'm a fan of womens volleyball ;)

I would think mens Lacrosse and Softball would be the next two sports considered. I don't know if it is still true but a couple years ago Clemson had one of the best Men's club Lacrosse teams in the nation. It would be an easy transition. Also softball is a southern sport and would be successful at Clemson. I think it will take several years for it to happen but eventually both will become varsity teams.

lacrosse team that played for excellent high school teams lax up north. I also think that softball is one of the few women's sports that wouldn't lose the athletic department money every year

I would like it, the upstate has put out a decent number of high school all americans in recent years

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

Yea it seems like it's picking up steam here in the Upstate

even though it's more of a Northern sport. I know there would be a ton of logistics involved with starting a new sport, but it would make our athletics program better I think

I don't see it happening anytime soon

Lacrosse is dominated by private schools, primarily because they have the money to support-- and field-- competetive Men's and Women's teams. The few relevant public school in lacrosse (that I can think of) are Maryland (saddled by massive debt) and North Carolina and Ohio State (both of which have enormous athletic budgets). I don't believe lacrosse is economically feasible for Clemson, especially when you consider Title IX.

True true

I hadn't thought about title 9 before the above poster also pointed it out. Title 9 is such a joke. Obviously I know it'd be a big under taking, just curious on whether it would be batted around by the powers that be or not

Clemson already has an established Lacross club team and playoff money is about to greatly increase our athletic budget. I don't think money will be the issue but Title IX could make it more difficult.

Duke, UNC, UVA, ND, & Cuse will be the only teams with men's lacrosse in the ACC next year. UMD is leaving and Louisville does not have a program. Probably too expensive to add another non-revenue generating sport (plus the women's team to balance out title IX). There is a Clemson team that plays in the MCLA, not NCAA, but most of the schools in this area play in that league anyway. Check out their website for their schedule: http://laxteams.net/clemson/

We also have a club hockey team FYI........

Women's Softball should be the sports to add.

The ACC has several of the top programs in the country. 2012 final rankings according to NCAA.com:

1) Duke
2) Syracuse
3) Cornell
4) Denver
5) UNC
6) Notre Dame
7) Yale
8) Ohio State
9) Loyola (Md)
10) Maryland
11) Penn State
12) Albany
13) Lehigh
14) Princeton
15) Bucknell
16) Towson
17) Johns Hopkins
18) Penn
19) Drexel
20) Bryant
"Also receiving votes:" UVA, Villanova, St. John's Detroit, Georgetown

The top two and four of the top six. That's stupid good. UVA is the only program in the ACC that ISN'T in the top six. It would be fun to be a part of it. Men's Lacrosse and Women's Softball also represent sports that would be watchable content in a future ACC network.
