WSJ article today says Biden’s 4% Military spending increase is actually a 4% decrease

Mar 30, 2022, 9:11 AM

due to inflation and will set back U.S. Military’s ability to stay in front of and/or even with China for a decade. Yep, That’s 10 freaking years!

Guess I’ll need to build that backyard bunker, after all, according to Glenn Beck.

Would laugh if it wasn’t that the needed military $ are instead going to all kinds of Social reform to their voting constituents and to School Labor Unions (while Charter Schools are being shut down since they feel public schools are equal learning institutions).

Thx a lot DEMs!

What is actually happening is unfortunately a little less

political, I think. Up until the past year or so, the federal government just spent money at will. Pandemic? Toss money. Military, how much do you need? For 40 years we've spent at will with few restraints, with the only issue being the politics of whatever money was being spent on. Republicans spent money on the military, and kept taxes low. Democrats spent on social programs and entitlements, and cut a little military spending. But regardless of party affiliation, spending was consistent, just on different things for different parties, pandering to the voters.

BUT, with 8% inflation all that spending becomes a problem all of a sudden because of existing debt. We spend $300,000,000 to $400,000,000 yearly servicing our debt. Similar to making a minimum payment on your credit card. As long as your credit card has a 2% interest rate, you can have a $200,000 balance and only be making $80,000 a year. It only costs $4,000 to pay the interest on your $100,000 balance. If that credit card suddenly charges 10% interest, then you have a problem. You have to come up with $20,000 to pay the interest, on your $80,000 salary.

So Congress is going to be spending less and less because with o9ur current debt, and inflation, they can get in a really bad spot. Which is why I think the federal reserve is lowballing rate increases.

The DoD budget is my livelihood, at least the R&D and S&T parts. I've been in and around it my whole career, and my son is an AF fighter pilot.

I would rather see the DoD focus on management efficiency than "ridding ranks of extremists." There is room to do more with less, but it has to start with individuals learning how to run their little part of the DoD business more efficiently. And, I am not talking about turning up audits 10x on contractors - all that does is RAISE costs.

I am suggesting that everyone in the DoD and civilians in DoD management positions get turned into business people instead of bureaucrats.

At what managerial level of the DoD must we go to find someone with managerial acumen to mentor the lower-levels?

Or, is there managerial expertise at some mid-level of the DoD ... in which case how do these mid-level managers jump over their bureaucratically entrenched senior DoD people?

Or, are there no decent manager types at DoD ... in which case who picks the 'managerial expertise' consultants which get put into the DoD to do the 'manager / business skills' stuff?

First step is to cut more contractors

DoD can be more efficient by understanding what things cost. The markup for government contracts is obscene. No need to audit afterward, fix the pricing in advance.
