Notre Dame Football / Conference Math

Jul 21, 2016, 12:18 PM

As it stands today, ACC schools are bringing in roughly $27 million annually in media rights fees. With Notre Dame not being compensated for football, they receive 20% of that figure, or roughly $5.5 million annually.

The ACC owns between 2 and 3 Notre Dame games annually that are played on ACC home fields, which has helped boost our media rights fees.

NBC is paying Notre Dame $15 million annually for its home game slate, Shamrock Series neutral events included. In addition, the 2-3 ACC teams playing at Notre Dame get national exposure on NBC, essentially the only other national exposure outside of the Disney/ESPN/ABC platform.

So, subtracting $5.5 million from $27 million equals $21.5 million, the TV value NOT being paid to Notre Dame and instead included in the other 14 member payouts.

If Notre Dame's home schedule is valued at $15 Million (as Notre Dame and NBC have established for the next ten years), then going by the math, we're $6.5 million ahead annually with our current agreement. AND, that current payoff is now only going to grow more disproportionately with a linear network.

Conclusion: Notre Dame as a full member would COST current full members, not add to the bottom line. It's the reverse of what many people tend to believe when it comes to their participation. The ACC and its full members are better off from a financial and exposure standpoint with Notre Dame remaining independent in football.

Nice breakdown. I see your point.

Interesting analysis! Looks like ND re-signing with NBC

Jul 21, 2016, 12:33 PM

for another 10 years thru 2025 was a bad move especially after the SEC signed their mega deal. Good, let them suck on that bitter pill a few years while they still think they are better than all the other schools!

Adding ND & another team would up the ESPN contract

Jul 21, 2016, 12:40 PM

But the only way it'd be truly profitable would be adding ND and getting NBC involved, much the way CBS is involved with the SEC. That contract alone is at least $3 mil a year per school.

Most are assuming the ACC TV contract would be renegotiated if ND joins the conference.

Agree with your analysis using the existing contracts.

In the short term, you are right. In the long term, you are wrong. As one sports writer put it years ago: "Whoever gets Notre Dame,- wins." An ACC with Notre Dame in it would be a bigger draw than the completely southern based SEC..even if the SEC has better football teams.

The numbers support that we've already won.

Jul 21, 2016, 1:40 PM

Our rights fees already jumped some with their partial, plus the ACC has the benefit of the extra national exposure via NBC. Considering the value, mixed with exposure, has already been established in a mutual, non-duress environment between ND and NBC, I can't see how speculating otherwise makes sense.

I had a back and forth with another, very respected sportswriter, who was claiming how an ACC Network would require the league to expand to 9 football games to make it happen. He was wrong. They sometimes are. That's the nature of speculation regardless of how much insight you feel you might have into a scenario.

Seems the ACC placated ESPN with xtra BKB games.

Jul 21, 2016, 1:46 PM

I could be wrong, have been before , but with the conference networks mainly broadcasting 3rd tier football games, the viewership the rest of the year(BKB & BSB) will help the ACC Network out. Hopefully it helps as a tool in BKB recruiting.

ND doesn't exclusively care about revenue

Jul 21, 2016, 1:31 PM

It's the structure of the deal. They have one of the wealthiest alumni bases in the country. They print money. ND values NBC because it puts them in every household in the country. Independence and NBC is what separates them from being another Midwestern school. The value to ND brings both tangible and intangible benefits that the tv revenue numbers can't possibly show.

And the ESPN/ACC contract with a full time ND be substantially greater than what it is now.

there is literally no way we would get less money with ND being added.

I don't know about the math part. I read a thread on here a few days ago that the ACC's power team $$$$'s were $22.3 million. This included TV rights, bowl money, and basketball tournament money. If the $27 million is for the media rights only, that's a heck of a deal. By the way, that $22.3 million was the lowest amount for the Power 5 conferences.

While $1 mil off for this year, next year's will only widen

Jul 21, 2016, 7:32 PM

the gap with the extra giddyup from the CFP, plus our annual ESPN escalation. All of that grows at 4:1 over ND's payout.

However, not factored in any of this is if ND takes an ACC spot in the Orange Bowl, which is back in the normal rotation for the next two years. How would that skew the dispursements? They should have some pretty competitive squads over the coming years.

Does ND take the ACC's place in the OB

Jul 21, 2016, 7:42 PM

or does ND play the ACC in the OB ? Saw a couple of "experts" predicting an FSU/ND matchup in the OB this year and had me wondering if it was possible.

Also, that record setting BKB tourney payout will be included next year.

have a CFP team that's also the conference champion and no other higher candidate, or make it as an at-large. They're a surrogate in a way if the ACC can't produce a better qualifier.

On the basketball side - yes! What a coup. Expanding to 20 league games was a great move also, and a hat's off throughout the league for being on board for that. That will push league games into December before Christmas - gold for a media outlet, and it saved an 8-game football schedule.

With so much competition for eyeballs in the fall with football, the ACC has the hands-down best winter product by miles in basketball, and it just got better by adding more league games. We're in a fantastic spot - not too leveraged, eggs in many baskets - skrong.
