Recruiting stars mean absolutely nothing!

Jun 28, 2018, 4:19 PM

As I was reviewing past recruiting classes it becomes very clear that Dabo and his staff know exactly what they're doing. The class that won the national championship had zero 5 Star recruits among them. Even Watson was rated 4 stars by some recruiting services. That entire signing class was made up of merely 3 and 4 star recruits.

When Dabo and his staff analyze a recruit they first review their strengths and then they see where they can use him on the team. In other words, they don't exmaine a recruit based on where they currently sit, but on the future potential that they could bring to the program. They also look at academic performance, personality, and maturity. If they eliminate any off field issues then it frees up available time to invest in their football coaching. They know that when they recruit a kid out of high school that he will still require a lot of coaching. Regardless if he's a football stud or a 1 star recruit all will need the same amount coaching. Grady Jarrett, Adam Humphries, Hunter Renfrow, and several others have proven the STAR Power theory to be nothing more than post and pre season talking points. Make no mistake, Dabo and his staff usually get who they really want. They offer a lot of kids, but there's a difference between offering a kid and actually recruiting a kid. They don't waste time recruiting someone that they know will not mesh well with the established system.

Take some of these other 5 Star QBs or Defensive Linemen. They may be good in some styles of play, but just don't quite fit the mold of our playbook, our program, or our scheme. Some of the extremely talented kids just don't carry the right attitude and would not work out at Clemson anyway. I think it's safe to say that we have a bright future at Clemson for many years if not a couple of decades to come. So, for those that are worried about recruiting at Clemson I wouldn't worry too much.

I believe there was a few five stars in Tampa the night I watched my Tigers beat Bama and they were wearing orange.Mitch Hyatt comes to mind.

I do well remember a five star DE from Rock Hill who is still trying to develop into a real five star. Another from Georgia didn’t develop into a world beater either even though his mommy knew he was the greatest. Dabo gets it done.

I do agree that the Clemson coaching staff does an incredible job of molding and building their players. And I think you are somewhat correct about the star system. But I think there must be a difference between a five star and a two star. A lot of it is talking points, but there are stud players coming out of high school, just like there are studs coming out of college to the next level. Now, if said studs have the right temperament, personality, work ethic and desire, coach Swinney and his assistants will want them. If a five star does not have the intangibles, then they can go elsewhere. The star system, from what I know, is about tangible stuff. It's the stuff beneath the surface that has to be exposed.

Tryvon Mullen, Christian Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence, Deon Cain, Tavien Feaster, Mitch Hyatt.... About 10 more were knocking on the door of being a 5 star.

Data doesn't support your theory

Read up on the Blue Chip Ratio and you'll see that recruiting 4 and 5 stars do matter. A lot actually. As in if you don't recruit more 4/5 stars than 3 stars you're not winning championships which is what the goal is.

I'm a Star at Recruiting

Clemson is the exception. We actually have 5 Star Coaches that can turn two star recruits into 5 Star Collegiate Athletes. BOOM! MIC DROP! LOL

We pull in anywhere from 5-10

3 stars per class on average and you went back 6 years and picked 3 names and "several others" that turned their 2 star ranking into 5 star college player. 3 stars that turn into elite players are the exception even at Clemson. Our coaches are good at evaluating talent and identifying some hidden gems but let's not kid ourselves that it also took a lot of blue chip players to get this program where it is and where it will continue to be.

Clemson is not an exception. We met the blue chip ratio. No one wins a national championship without at least 50% of the roster being 4 or 5 star guys. Clemson included.

They don't mean everything. But they also certainly don't

Jun 28, 2018, 7:53 PM

mean nothing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lol, what on Earth are you talking about?

Jun 28, 2018, 10:42 PM

Recruiting star rankings aren't definite indications of how a prospect will turn out. Sometimes, an under-the-radar prospect will out perform his ranking, and a 5-star guy might be a bust

But more often than not, a 5 star guy is going to be a better athlete with more potential, and it's up to the coaching staff to develop the prospect to reach his ceiling

And to say there wasn't a single 5 star guy on the field in Tampa is absolutely asinine....

Watson
Cain
McCloud
Wilkins
Lawrence
Lamar
Smith

All 5 star guys per rivals. Hyatt was a 5* per 247

Dead horse meet stick. I don’t know how many times someone here has to explain the blue chip ratio. Clemson was the lowest blue chip ratio to win a national championship at like 70 something percent of the 2 deep. We are set up for a run thanks to TLaw, XT, KJ Henry, DK, Tee Higgins, Amari Rodgers, Bockhorst, Ladson, fingers crossed a few more in 19 and several in 2020. Also, Bama seems to have a good blue print and it’s not run low rated 3 stars out there. We have got and hopefully will continue to get high 4 and 5 star guys we need to compete.

Noticed that 247 listed 23 of those low 3 stars you

mentioned as athletes competing at the opening. They know something just like Dabo!!
