The veery scary thing is that this guy is a professor at Clemson and poisoning our young adults with this diatribe of nonsense!!

The liberal arts profs are jealous of the amount Swinney earns. While they sit in their cushy tenured bubble with no pressure and almost impossible to fire.

He's an assistant professor. He doesn't have tenure yet.

He better be doing some academic research and publishing refereed journal articles, instead of fluff letters - if he wants tenure.

Find out who his department head is and flood him with letters of objection.

Re: Riding Coach Swinney's

Sep 14, 2016, 8:35 PM [ in reply to Re: Riding Coach Swinney's ]

How is this thoughtfully written piece nonsense? You can disagree with the professor all you want, can disagree with motives for publishing this, but nonsense? Are we to assume that you are an MLK scholar and are above countering the factual points and arguments made by the professor?

And are you really surprised that any professor--in any field at any school--would be disheartened by their university spending millions on football instead of their pet research projects?

I'm glad professors like this are at Clemson and you should be, too. Students need their beliefs challenged. Conservative students can have their beliefs honed and their positions sharpened by encounters with liberal professors. And vice versa.

That's how students learn to think.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Honestly, this is just part of the dialogue

Sep 14, 2016, 9:48 AM [ in reply to Re: Clemson professor addresses his concerns with Swinney ]

I like much of what Dabo said, even if i disagreed with parts of it. I found it well reasoned and didn't have a problem with much of it.

I could've done without the "some folks should go to another country" bit, but I think that's just part of our coach running loose with his thoughts when asked.

But this dialogue we are having in this country is going to contain folks who disagree with him, and it's not any more "whining" for this professor to input his opinion as it is for Dabo to do the same.

Perhaps so

Sep 14, 2016, 9:55 AM

If so, then it was again another case of him running loose with his thoughts and it leading him to leave a sentence dangling that unfortunately sounded like much of the Kapernick criticism ("move somewhere else if you think its so bad here").

Again, I don't think Dabo has a hateful bone in his body. I think he is for the most part very well reasoned and his opinion on the issue appears to be measured and logically sound. I just didn't like the "go to another country" sound bit left dangling.

Americans are the least traveled nation of people on Earth

Sep 14, 2016, 10:17 AM [ in reply to Perhaps so ]

short of North Korea and maybe a few third world countries. Certainly we're the least traveled of any developed nation. I think every American should travel to a third world country for a month and then come back and complain about how bad we have it. When you only have yourself as a reference, you lose touch of reality. Much like Plato's allegory of the cave, that is America in far too many ways. We're arguing about illegal immigration, which gender can use bathrooms, and if gay people can marry, and about crime. In many other places people are complaining about not having water, food, clothing, or ANY health care at all. If you see yourself as at the bottom or lower class among the wealthiest on Earth, and you have no other perspective, then you will complain and it will fall on deaf ears to those who have traveled the world who understand and appreciate how GOOD America actually is compared to nearly everywhere else.

And like the professor says (or doesn't), Dabo with his millions complaining is no better than Kapernick and his millions complaining. The difference is Dabo sees, and appreciates the opportunities America has afforded him to make his millions coming from poverty. Kapernick does not see, nor appreciate, the opportunity America has given him to make his millions coming from poverty. Every American needs a foreign perspective to understand what it is to be American, because without travel, you're clueless and just a tool for those trying to gain power. And THAT is what is really making Dabo (and myself) sad about what's happening in America today. You saw it just recently with the NCAA boycotting the players, coaches, schools, and people of North Carolina for making a law that enforces nothing more or less than people have done for hundreds of years the world over, use gender specific bathrooms. In fact, the opposite of the NC law discriminates against the 99% of people who would just assume their 8 year girls not go into restrooms with grown men. Money and power are stifling speech in America because we're not functioning as a republic, but as a nation-state. Let NC have their bathroom laws, let California have their environmental laws, let every state have their own tax laws. Let a racist be racist, let an environmentalist or a communist be what they are. But concentrating power in a single place (Washington) will not work because power concentrated does not placate a large and diverse democracy. Dispersed power does, and dispersed power made America great. It also makes us free and subsequently prosperous.

The overwhelming majority of immigrants who came here legally in the 19th and 20th century just moved here. They did not rape or murder or enslave anyone in the process. The immigrants who come here legally now are the same and we welcome them!
My ancestors sold themselves into indentured servitude to get here and others from my family history were Irish people enslaved aginst their will.
I must say that I am entirely grateful that no matter how they got here they got here and I am Blessed beyond measure to be an American!

kinda like the one where American's have the fewest people that are multi-lingual. American is a freakin continent with only 2 real border countries. One of them also speaks majority english.

Europeans are considered "traveled" and multi-lingual because they go from France to Germany....the equivalent of going from SC to NC. If our states were countries that spoke different languages we would be the most traveled people in the world.

The cultural and social differences between

Sep 14, 2016, 12:21 PM [ in reply to Slightly flawed statistic ]

France and Germany (like SC and NC) are about 20 times greater than the cultural differences between Tampa, Florida and Seattle, Washington. Heck, the cultural differences between France and Germany are far greater than the differences between Perth, Australia and Columbia, SC. And the cultural differences between Marbella, Spain and Tangier, Morocco are about as stark as you can get in 10-15 miles. Nude beaches in one place, and women can't show skin in the other.

Sep 14, 2016, 12:40 PM [ in reply to Americans are the least traveled nation of people on Earth ]

One example which completely screws these remarks: China - not only can most Chinese not travel to other countries, but they are prevented from pursuing further education if they do not "test well".

Try Russia! Good lord, were you raised in a bubble? Do you not remember the Berlin Wall? Go to Russia and invite those you meet to come and visit you over here and see what their response is. Do you think the average Russian is allowed to go from the country whenever they please?

Methinks you need to read or get out a bit more.

Sep 14, 2016, 10:49 AM

some black people get mad as hail bc a white guy says we ought to love and respect our neighbors. black guy basically says no....we need to be confrontational.

That's what I came away with from reading that open letter.

quick glance at his education: studied African American/black studies from Penn State. Nothing wrong with that degree at all and shows he has a background on the subject of MLK however I'm 99.9% positive his professors taught him many far left things concerning MLK that I don't believe is the whole picture of who MLK was. I studied History and took a class on the Civil Rights movement and was taught from a completely conservative view so whatever I say on the subject will be in direct opposition to Dr. Kumanyika. I will only say this, his views are what caused a lot of strife after the "sit ins" and the non-confrontational protests. MLK and a lot of those who followed him started out with good intentions but when loud mouths and hot heads started pushing for more confrontation. It's obvious this guy likes confrontation. From "getting rid of the whiteness in public radio" to getting kicked out of Trump Rally's and being at the forefront of Ferguson (amazing what google can show you about someone). He is a brash and abrasive individual who is the type that keeps racism prevalent in this country.

end of rant

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sep 14, 2016, 11:07 AM

By all means, disagree with the professor. It sounds like you have some well-reasoned thoughts on the subject and well-meaning intelligent folks can disagree.

However, this is NOT "why racism still exists." To suggest that racism only exists because individual members of a group that was systematically oppressed for centuries are now expressing discomfort and disagreement with the current balance of power and opportunity in this country is ludicrous. This issue is entirely more nuanced than that simple-minded sentence would suggest.

Racism exists because some folks (from every race and group) harbor xenophobic views of the "other guys" and allow them to color how they interact with, think about, and treat those groups. Sometimes this is done intentionally, sometimes it is done through a pervasive unrecognized outlook that heaps criticism on the "other guys" while ignoring the faults of your own.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

how about "racism will always exist"

Sep 14, 2016, 11:22 AM

but its up to us in how we respond to the oppression? Racism existed back during the time of Moses in Genesis and the Exodus. It's existed for forever, however its how we respond that really matters. Maybe Dabo is right in that its about loving your neighbor no matter who they are and what they believe? At the same time I can't take someone seriously Dr. Kumanyika about oppression and hate against black people when they have not even tasted the oppression of their forefathers. He did what the Civil Rights movement push for...He got an education from a Prestigious school (Penn St.) and got a profession as a Assistant Professor at a University in the South that started out on a Planation. He can talk all he wants about MLK and the Civil Rights movement because he studied it and knows a lot about it, but he cannot liken himself to those who are truly struggling to break the racial barriers and no I'm not talking about Kaepernick. Those who are striving daily to break those barriers live far and wide. Not just in America. Its the blacks that live in Australia or the people who wear Burkas in France. People are oppressed far and wide but it is up to the common man in how we respond. Dabo responded like a man I respect and admire. In an impromptu sermon if you will his main thought was that we just have to love each other. The world is mired by sin and hate but man we just have to love each other and respect each other. Dr. Kumanyika to me does not represent that. He is pushing the race card and agenda in such a way that it breeds hate and hinders the growth away from racism.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Professor Kumanyika, 'take MLK's name out of your mouth'?

Sep 14, 2016, 11:07 AM

Really? A man of your education, background, and position. That's your opening?

How much thought did you put into that title of indignation? You disagree with Dabo's characterization of Dr. King's legacy? Fine. Good job pointing that out in the body of your letter. However, your title points to continued division, elitism, and yes, bigotry. I thought we were trying to fix those things. I know the first amendment allows Dabo to utter those words publicly if he so chooses.

In addition to the interpretation of MLK's legacy; there are many other points in Dabo's answer worthy of pursing, reaching common ground, and taking action on. As a professor and ambassador for Clemson University, take a leadership role. Reach out to Coach Swinney, seek common ground, and implement change.

Who knows, great things may happen as a result of your action.

As a white moderate am I part of the problem. I marched for civil rights in the 60's and helped desegregate eating places, movie theaters, and roller rinks before you were even born professor. Are you suggesting that because I am white, even though I did that, I can't use MLK's name? The fact is, though I agree that many low paying jobs at Clemson are probably underpaid, what does Swinney have to do with that? Does he hire them, or for that matter, does he hire professors(which you say are under represented)? Yes you both work at a school founded by racists, so does virtually every professor at most Southern schools. That is all history. If you want change, talk to the Administration, the Governor, the Legislature, not a football coach.

Re: Clemson professor addresses his concerns with Swinney

Sep 15, 2016, 6:24 AM

I finally read what the professor said. It had almost nothing to do with what Dabo said. It was a opportunity for this professor to have a platform. He should write Dabo a personal note thanking him for giving him the opportunity. It was the only way he was going to get an audience that he was not already reaching.

Dabo's position on Kapernick was the original question. He thought it was a distraction to the team. Kapernick is not a very good player and he plays for a coach who thinks scheme ultimately trumps everything else in football, so team chemistry and unity may not matter as much to the 49ers. It matters to Dabo because ilhe believes that is what propels his teams to Championships.

It still amazes me that some folks try to paint Dabo as sme rube. This whole focus on his comments could not have come at a better time. Every amount of energy spent on this takes away time from media members to ask our players about why they are dropping balls and missing open receivers. While people are pontificating about this, Dabo the football coach is working with our receivers in practice to help them get their confidence back so that they can perform at a high level. Sometimes distractions from the team are bad and sometimes they are what is needed.

#Dropped Balls Matter
