They just shot down another high flying "object" over Canada

2

Feb 11, 2023, 5:40 PM

I know there are a lot of very intelligent people here on Tnet. Can some of you explain this to me. They want to recover these objects, gather up the pieces and try to see what they are doing and see what information they are capable of gathering with the spy equipment. My question is why in the world do they blow the objects into a zillion pieces with $400,000 sidewinder missiles? Especially with these lower flying objects at 40,000 ft or less. Why not use low caliber instead of blowing the thing to smithereens?

Also have had a record number of Chinese nationals trying to get in at our southern border in the last month, but no worries all is good here.

in the USA at our Universities, owning and operating businesses, etc. ANY and ALL Chinese owned businesses are operated by Chinese citizens are allowed specifically by the PRC with plenty of kickbacks to the high leaders to do so. I used to work for a company that was bought by the Chinese. I got out as soon as they came in when the opportunity came.

You should be more worried about the other nationalists that sneak in. Most of the Chinese come in through work/study Visas.

It is either a balloon or drone. Small caliber will bring either down.

From what I've read it's not as easy as one might think for airplanes with even large caliber machine guns to shoot down a balloon.

In the case of the 1st balloon shot down outside the People’s Republic of Horry County, took a missle to reach it at approx 60K feet. Even our fighter jets don’t come within a few miles of that.

As for the last few flying at 40K feet, I can’t fathom a good answer. Seems if it was a balloon, just pop it and it will come down.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: They just shot down another high flying "object" over Canada

Feb 11, 2023, 7:04 PM

This^^

I think people are underestimating just how high up 60k ft is. Commercial airlines cruise at 35k, so when you look up and see them, double it. 60k is 11+ miles above the land. 50 calibre cannons on the front of an F22 would be shooting 4 miles up and the idea is to not damage the payload anymore than is necessary. It is my understanding that the missile didn’t explode, it was designed to partially collapse the balloon causing it to fall but not at free fall speeds. We need to recover the satellites attached to these things and see what they’re capable of gathering.

You’re a little off on your info. The F22 can fly 10 miles up putting it around 53,000 ft and the F15 could fly up to 65,000 ft per the manufacturers.

Re: They just shot down another high flying "object" over Canada

Feb 11, 2023, 7:34 PM [ in reply to Re: They just shot down another high flying "object" over Canada ]

If you will read my statement I stated especially those that fly 40,000 ft. Airforce ONE flies at 45,000 ft. Some corporate jets fly at over 50,000 ft. The jets with these last two could have flown up took good pictures and have at exactly what the thing looked like before shooting it down. Then shot it down with something less destructive than a $400,000 sidewinder. I can not think of any good reason why they did not.

The payload released instantly when the missile hit. Again I am speaking primarily about the two flying at 40,000 ft. We have an international agreement with all countries concerning satellites.

Agreed. Can't understand why they use a missile costing close to 400 K when a 20mm round is about 30 bucks.

Feb 11, 2023, 8:09 PM [ in reply to Re: The missile was launched at the balloon, not the ]

I read the ballon last weekend was the first time an F-22 had shot anything down. I was wondering if maybe they were using this as maybe a bit of a test run for this aircraft and therefore wanted to see how the missiles performed? Can’t think of any other reason. I saw that the 2 recent “objects “ were also brought down by F-22s but didn’t see if they used missiles or guns. Has it been confirmed they used missiles on those too?

Short answer. Idiots running things right now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure how small you are thinking, but a sidewinder isn’t all that big

Feb 11, 2023, 8:40 PM

I don’t think one weighs more that 150 lbs and I’d guess about 6 inches total in diameter.

Also, these thinks are heat seekers, but don’t necessarily have to detonate on impact.

Hitting a sheet of ice after falling 40k feet is a problem too!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Not sure how small you are thinking, but a sidewinder isn’t all that big

Feb 11, 2023, 9:34 PM

Using smaller ammo you can put object in slower descent. Smaller holes. First of all you fly up and see what the object is.

When object was hit by sidewinder its spy or whatever equipment was released immediately.
If intelligence equipped planes had gone up prior to shooting down the object they not only could have gotten good pictures they maybe could have intercepted info being sent up to that countries satellite or blocked it.

The funniest thing about all of this

Feb 11, 2023, 9:49 PM

Is that there seems to be a legitimate threat of an EMP attack and the left is pushing for the automotive industry to go electric. In a couple of years, when our power grid is out of commission, they are going to somehow blame this on Trump. Oh the irony.

The information that the USG and DOD are going to release this early in the process is extremely limited and ‘sanitized’. You will save yourself a lot of unnecessary or wasted effort trying to understand or explain what is going on - or why - at this stage.

What does concern me is the manner in which the current administration is handling the incidents and the failure to inform not only the public, but members of Senate and Congress on events. [Disclaimer: I admit I already was not a fan of this president or his administration. ]
