NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS FROM CHESTY

Sep 5, 2021, 8:06 AM

DJ is young, needs more development to take command of the offense. Clemson needs to play to their strengths by manipulating opponents with schemes. For example, when receivers are covered in double coverage, there’s usually gaps which can be exploited with a QB run.

No less than 12 times I watched the WRs get covered on short routes. DJ could have tucked the ball and ran to extend plays and move the sticks. He chose to throw the ball away or take a sack.

Had he chose to run, it would have held the UGA defense honest by forcing them to place a spy on DJ. This would have opened WRs for 1on1 coverage. This usually leave a TE open. A few passes underneath or a quick slant to the TE can open up running lanes for Pace, Shipley, and Dixon.

Football not only requires heart, speed, and strength, but also requires intellect. The Offensive Line was no different than any other line. UGA brought pressure every play, whereas Clemson’s defense played zone coverage most of the night. An offensive line has about 5-8 seconds against any defense and our receivers are well covered.

This all boils down to the man with the clipboard. When Coach Venables didn’t have the strong 4 man front he needed, he used intellect to make it work. He instead played a 3-5 man coverage or zone to compensate for it. The same needs to be said of the offense. Coach Elliott needs to manipulate opponents by creating the pick your poison scenario. Clemson has the tools on the field to do that, so there’s no excuse not to use your creative mind to accomplish that. It’s about expanding and constricting the opposing defenses. Keeping them off balance while establishing a rhythm.

There’s my take on it for what it’s worth.

Our country won't go on forever, if we stay soft as we are now. There won't be any America because some foreign soldiery will invade us and take our women and breed a hardier race.

I feel like DJ is Tajh Boyd 2.0. He has the size and cannon for an arm to be really good. He needs to build his confidence and not be afraid to use that size to advance the ball when the pocket begins to breakdown. Too many times I saw him sit back there waiting for a route to develop. He will be able to get away with that for probably the rest of our schedule. We won't face another defensive front as good as what we saw last night. He also needs to work on that chemistry with his receivers. We know what Ross can do and Ngata finally showed us his potential last night. Pass protection from the RB's will be critical. Shipley has a lot to learn about PP but will get it at some point. Lynn J will be our starter moving forward if he is not hurt. That is where he excels in my opinion. Bottom line, there is a LOT of potential for this 2021 version of the Tigers. We need to put it all together and see if we can win out from here. Then we see what awaits us for the post season.
