Has coach V lost respect of NFL caliber LB recruits?

Mar 28, 2021, 10:09 PM

What is the deal with not being able to attract top NFL caliber LB recruits? Our LB exhibit has been average over the last 3 years. Bouleware was great, but not elite. Skalski the same. When do we get edge rushers and LBs and/or DBs who become top 10?

We signed 2 of the top LB's in the nation last year. Some sources had Barrett the top OLB in the nation and some sources had Trotter a top 2 ILB. He is doing great. Then we had Simpson last year who was a 5 star. He is doing great. We just missed on 1 this year. It happens.

Not elite? In the last two cycles Clemson has signed two 5*, in Barrett Carter and Trenton Simpson, and a borderline 5* in Trotter Jr. These are going to be the most talented guys BV has ever had to work with. I agree missing on Walker was big, but it was a position where we actually have some depth. We can not miss on a DB this year.

Spoiled perhaps. Just would have thought we would have seen more Simmons type LBs being produced into the NFL by now given Venables reputation. Seems like we either miss getting the right 4 or 5 stars or we don’t develop them.

Not sure why we are not seeing more productivity and elite play at what is considered to be the QB position of the D. Our QBs and WRs and RBs and D line seem to be there.

It's not even that. You just have unrealistic expectations. There are a lot of great HS football players. There are exponentially less great college football players. And there are exponentially less college players that actually make it in the NFL. To look at a 16-17 year old kid and say "I bet you'll be an NFL linebacker" is so unrealistic.

The problem here is one you have made up.

Trust the process.

Huff, I'd listen to Clemson Paw at others. NFL linebackers can come from anywhere. Uga can't boast about it. Look at luke, we played against. Here's an article that may help you. It's ppf rank of the top 20 linebackers in the league now. You won't find uga anywhere. In fact, the 3rd and 4th best came from SC state and Arkansas st respectively.

The NFL is getting away from the traditional linebacker. It's becoming more hybrid like Simmons and has been the last 5 yrs or so. Guess what, CBV has been ahead of the curve and recruiting guys as such. Reference the one's we've recruited the last 3 cycles and the group on the field. Kirby tells every recruit just like he promised fields that he would start freshman year. Some 18 yr old kid laps it up because they want to hear it. Let's see what happens, the kid hasn't signed anything yet. If he stays with uga, let's see what impact he has.

I am watching the last 2-3 years and concerned with our play in big games. Forget recruits for a second. Where is the Mack daddy linebacker play?

So now we miss on a big recruit.

How many NFL linebackers have we placed recently?

This is why ask.

I can (and usually will) be wrong, but it seems like we have fallen off.

Question. Ever heard of a guy named Isaiah Simmons? Won some awards at LB. Drafted in the first round into the NFL. I would say that qualified him as being an NFL guy. And "Routine" 4 and 5 star guy? Do you even begin to know how silly that sounds? Do you know how star ratings work and translate with regard to the NFL system. Please...no more! lol.

No way an LB recruit should ever pick UGA over Clemson unless there is doubt. Bama? Sure. UGA? Huh!

There are just too many factors to assume a kid makes a decision based on the strength of the team and or program. Over and over we have seen kids make decisions that leave us scratching our heads and a lot of it has to do with the fact that they are children making the biggest decision of their lives. Do you remember 18 year old you? I should have been considered borderline brain dead. Donnie Baker would agree, I swear da gawd.

Why did Tahj, CJ or Sammy chose Clemson when

Mar 28, 2021, 11:42 PM [ in reply to Not trolling.. not my thing... serious question ]

they could have chosen stronger programs? The emphasis to college coaches isn't NFL talent but cultural and team fit, as Dabo says repeatedly when referencing players/recruits. Our challenges on defense the last few years have largely been on an underwhelming defensive line allowing pressure to be put on the back seven. Winning in the trenches has proven to be the great equalizer for defenses... an offense that can average 4 yards per play are getting first downs and moving the chains on average, which is keeping defenses on the field longer, breaking down their stamina and creating opportunities for scores...

All 11 players on D are critical but it really starts in the front four with stopping the run and getting QB pressure without blitz packages...

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Why did Tahj, CJ or Sammy chose Clemson when

Mar 28, 2021, 11:50 PM

exactly. D line has been the key to defensive success as long as BV has been here. Pur LBs even the best years were at best pretty good most of the time. It was the D Line that set the tone. Since the power rangers left our D line has been average, especially at DE. The recruits have had ranking. XT #1, Henry #5.. But have not really taken the next steps or developed. I for one think Hobby being gone is an huge factor. Time will tell but he and Brooks were a GREAT team up front. Just seems different now.

2019: Bryton Constantine (#8 OLB), Vonta Bentley (#16 ILB), Kane Patterson (#20 ILB), Keith Maguire (#26 OLB)

2020: Trenton Simpson (#1 OLB), Sergio Allen (#12 ILB), Kevin Swint (#15 ILB)

2021: Barrett Carter (#2 OLB), Jeremiah Trotter Jr (#2 ILB)

How is this average? There a very few teams, maybe 3-4, that have signed a better group of LBs over the last 3 years than Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Has coach V lost respect of NFL caliber LB recruits?

Mar 29, 2021, 9:57 PM

Honestly speaking.....with the exception of Simpson, Constantine (injury) & the 2021 recruits it doesnt appear the rest are that good. They can't beat out a bunch of 3 stars (Spector, Skalski, Jake & Tyler Veneables) who are slow and little to no NFL potential. So either they are not that good or CBV has favorites. Sad to say but only calling what I see as far as the players on the field getting the most snaps.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Has coach V lost respect of NFL caliber LB recruits?

Mar 30, 2021, 11:38 AM

Skalski and Spector have more years of experience on them though. BV has a complicated system to learn. That's why Spencer Shuey started over a much more talented Stephone Anthony. Hell, Isaiah Simmons didn't start until his 3rd year on campus. Bentley, Patterson, and Maguire are all 3rd years guys this year. But, they have a 5th year and 6th year in front of them. Is it possible that 3 star recruits can have more knowledge of the playbook than 4 and 5 star recruits? If the answer is yes, then you would understand why those former 3 stars are starting over former 4 and 5 stars. Do you expect BV to send out players that don't fully understand the scheme? Would that make the other 10 players on defense better? Would that help the team more?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Has coach V lost respect of NFL caliber LB recruits?

Mar 29, 2021, 1:08 PM

What is NFL caliber linebacker recruit? That makes no sense. Best we can do is a 5 star and it's difficult to predict if a high school 5 star will be a great college player, much less an NFL linebacker. Ridiculous expectations in my opinion.
