Lol, as far as I read, the two faculty mentioned were associate professors.
My guess is that they are likely tenured. (untenured Associates exist but are rare) The tenured label is specially designed to protect faculty for this reason.
Who cares, it is first amendment whatever and the first class is just having the TA read the syllabus to a bunch of sleeping freshman. One class isn't going to make a item over anything. Every faculty member "protests" over something eventually.
If I was teaching and heck bent on masks, I would just add a line to the syllabus require masks for "participation" grade and make it count. If tenured, it is hard to overturn a syllabus as it is a contract of sorts.

This will take care of itself when the covid related cases spike in the coming weeks. Not agreeing with either side on this, but if you feel safer wearing a mask, wear one. Seems to me, that's alot easier than staging a walk-out.

College professors, in many cases but certainly not all, have turned into enemies of our country. They teach anarchy and often their views and political stance. That is not in the books they are teaching from.
