How many of you complaining about Brownell today

emoji_events [7]
Apr 13, 2022, 9:22 PM

watched the entire 45 minute press conference he did today?

I’m not just talking about reading selected quotes in the TigerNet article, but actually heard everything he had to say?

If you didn’t, you should. It was a great press conference.

I think JK’s main takeaway is to listen to the whole interview. I saw parts of it but intend to watch the whole thing tomorrow. Like most on here I would love to see a more successful BBall program at Clemson with or without the current coaching staff. Unlike many here I believe Brownell could be part of that equation. It wont hurt me at all to listen to his statement.

Did you expect him to say his 2022-23 team was going to be average? After the 1992 football season, Hatfield said he was going to beat FSU in 1993. Final score FSU 57-0.

Of course not, but it was obvious that he’s genuinely excited

about next season and the future if the program.

That should be pleasing to the posters here to say he is boring/milquetoast/doesn’t show enthusiasm.

Not really sure what Hatfield has to do with this conversation.

Win big next year or resign.

emoji_events [5]
Apr 14, 2022, 12:23 AM

Right now he is stealing from Clemson.

He is one of the longest tenured coaches of the last 50 years at Clemson and hasn’t done a d@mn thing! Any school that cared about basketball would have fired him years ago.

And don’t give me your regurgitated BS. He has had more university support and better facilities than any basketball coach in Clemson history. At the same time the ACC has been at near historic lows in basketball and the NCAA tournament has never been easier to get into.

So now he has a press conference and after 12 years he’s committed to going to the final four. He’s committed to winning at all. Then why hasn’t he done anything even remotely close to that over the past 12 years at Clemson?

he should be winning big simply because we finally updated our archaic facilities after he had been here 5 years (which he largely raised the money for, by the way).

Yes, we are supposed to be really good at basketball even though we don’t financially support basketball as well as most other ACC teams or even as well as some mid-major teams.

Apr 14, 2022, 12:22 PM

You keep repeating the same ole stuff…Dabo raised his money by winning and winning big. Brownell, not so much. Kids everywhere have heard of Clemson now from our football program. Applications skyrocketed from students wanting to go to Clemson, as did tuition. Dabo even bet his on money on Clemson, by taking less and paying his assistants more. Has coach B done that, if he uses that as an excuse?

2022 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link

We paid Kevin Steele a very high salary before Dabo had won anything.

Apr 14, 2022, 2:40 PM

We paid Venables a very high salary before we ever came close to being a top team.

We had new facilities already in place when Dabo was hired, and plans we being made for new ones before Dabo won anything of significance.

Dabo has done a phenomenal job, but the revisionist history here which claims that he won and then got loads of support is incorrect. He got plenty of support early because Clemson’s administration and fans cared a lot about being really good at football. The same isn’t true for basketball, which is why our program is expected to pull off the impossible before the program is supported well.

11 winning seasons in 12 years

Being better than .500 is not an aggressive enough goal

Beat North Carolina in Chapel Hill

This was sweet. It was also an awful, awful UNC team that only won 6 conference games all season. Brownell is 1-5 in Chapel Hill and you want to give him a medal.

World University Games gold medal

Does anyone outside of Clemson even remember this "tournament"? It's completely irrelevant in the college basketball landscape.

Sweet 16 appearance

One time in 12 years, and regression since.

I hope he’s able to accomplish the goals he announced today. It just seems to me that those goals should have been there all along. In fact, they probably were, and if you’re not even approaching them after twelve seasons, there’s some serious question as to whether you’re on the right track.

Now he's wanting more money... And will probably get it. We'll make A tournament this next season and it'll be hyped to the max that he and neff turned the corner, claim success, give him another huge buyout and more years. Then year 14 will come knowing he's locked in for more $$$ and we'll miss the tourney because pj and Tyson will be gone. On to year 15 because we can't afford the buyout. Crazy.

But did you watch the whole 43:23? The other 40+ minutes are key, supposedly.
Ignore the first several minutes where he listed a bunch of excuses, didn’t you hear him say told the kids that we have to win more games? What more can a coach do?

- - - - -

More insights gleaned by continuing to watch:

PJ saved his bacon by helping with those late wins.

Not many top teams play freshmen. Clemson needs to develop players. So once Brad gets his players here then we’ll see, I guess. Maybe by year 15 or so. But transfers he didn’t develop will help.

Then some more excuses during the questions part.

“We’re in the middle” he says unironically. Isn’t that the definition of mediocre? Anyway, apparently people don’t appreciate enough how great it is to be “in the middle.” At least we are consistent. We should be proud of our consistent mediocrity.

Brad can just go to the portal and get a guy whenever he wants. We’ll get the benefit of The Princeton System, so there’s that.

- - - - -

At least we got a great opportunity to see Brad’s personality shining through. I mean, this dude’s phone is blowing up.

This was 43 minutes and 23 seconds of my life I won’t ever get back, but I did enjoy a nice cigar and did some crosswords while listening so not a total waste of time.

The fact that you can’t see that speaks volumes. It seems most of his defenders are either afraid to make a change because we could do worse, or they think this is the best we can do because of our history, or those like yourself that are friends with Brad and will support him no matter what.

The biggest thing I gleaned from it from Brad was that he knows and understands fans’ expectations are for him to get us back to the NCAA tournament for only the 4th time in his nearly 13 years. When you start making comparisons to other schools in your league then thats a problem. The only thing that matters is your program. I could care less about the others. By the way, I camped at the front of the line for every single game as a student when Purnell was the coach. I was on the floor for literally every single game. Multiple times I would leave games and literally walk back to re-set up my tent immediately after the buzzer. There was support for the program, tell me why it disappeared.

Do I like BB - sure.

Not sure what is to be gained by cherry picking stats for the past 5 years - with Clemson being 7th in wins. That was his favorite message.
I also think a poll of admired basketball programs from the ACC would not start with Clemson. Could be wrong, but sure seemed to be an anonymous stretch.

What I did not hear.
Specifically, what he is changing to move us from 10th.
What he felt like he accomplished the first 7 years. Or are they simply to be forgotten?
I did not hear many “I “ pronouns - as in “ I learned and I am responsible”.
I did not hear how he was going to change recruiting.
I did not hear how he plans to engage students.
I did not hear how he was going to put energy back into the program.
I did not hear the “why” our two point guards left the program.

If I had watched this video after year 3-4 - I would have a different reaction than year 13.

Give me exactly the steps, the moves, the changes HE is making and HE himself is changing to change the program. Then tell me why it took 12 years to get there. Remove the blame for things he cannot control. He could control a lot.
