Amen! I have an intense desire for my children to follow in mine and my husband's footsteps and attend Clemson University! Currently, they are only 6 years old and 2 1/2 years old. What is the tuition going to be when they are ready to attend? I fear for their future and that's after the financial arrangements we've set in place for their college tuition!

The real problem is that there's no market competition because there's essentially an unlimited supply of funds to spend on education because student loans are backed by the government. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but it takes away some of the typical demand-side pressures to shop around for better prices. If you couple that with the general confusion about the value of a degree, the market is pretty screwed up. It would be one thing if this influx of cash into higher education was going to pay for hiring more professors to teach more and more college students, but I think we can see that it's really going to administrator salaries and building construction.
One way to improve this would be to have the government exert more oversight over which educational institutions qualify to receive federally backed student loans.

Fraction of the cost and much easier process of actually getting in.
Barker is concerned about quality? How about he pay a visit to some of the snobbish faculty members classrooms who already don't want to give students the time of day when they ask for help. Many of them act as if it is inconvenient. Keeping the size of the classroom down doesn't change some of the inflated egos floating around the campus. Most forget that one of the main reasons they are there is to provide a service for which the student PAID for, I repeat, PAID for.
His idea of better classroom needs to be reevaluated. Campus construction seems to have picked back up...hence the increase in tuition. Didn't they just put a halt on tuition increases a year or two ago and the result was a delay in on campus construction? I wouldn't let this "preserve quality education" talk fool you...bricks and mortar aren't free.
Forgive my rant...just sick of paying out the ### for an education.

Professors receive a small fraction of the money that students pay in tuition (especially of recent increases to tuition), and generally make a lot less money than other individuals with the same level of education. The recent tuition increases are mostly owed to decreases in state funding.

most likely have 3 semesters left. At the rate it's been increasing it won't have a significant affect on my tuition, but if who knows how much it will be in 25 years when I'm looking at college for my kids.

3 semesters is an extra $570, not exactly chump change. And who knows they may hike it again next summer....

Not sure these facts are completely accurate. My out of state tuition jumped significantly in the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 years. Not sure that it wasn't more than this 3% figure. I could go to Clemson cheaper out of state than I could have gone to UNC in state at that time; but, that changed after my sophomore year. We needed to catch up and value the education we were providing at that time. Glad to see the flood gates won't ever be open at Clemson like they are elsewhere and our degrees carry a high level of respect and regard.
