Clemson and the national media

Oct 17, 2018, 11:05 AM

At the end of the day, I really don't care what the talking heads say or think. Everybody has an opinion, and like everyone else on planet Earth, those talking heads have the right to be wrong. And I think they are.

ANYWAY.....

Can someone lend some insight as to why 99% of the national media is overlooking Clemson right now? I mean seriously, what's up with that? They obviously don't look at the numbers or any metrics other than the final scores of the games. If they would just do even a little bit of homework, they would be talking about Clemson as a lock for the CFP once again. But instead, Clemson stands at #5 or #6...with teams like LSU, Notre Dame, and even UCF (in a couple of cases I've seen) ahead of Clemson.

I know none of that matters right now. And like I said, I don't really care. I've seen the numbers and I know how we measure up. I'm just really curious how some of the most respected analysts of the game come to their conclusions. Seems like laziness at best on their part.

It's not a stat. It's an expression. Making a point. Go with it.

I think the answer to the question is fairly simple. The media's job is to get ratings, and in order to get ratings, you've got to either find controversy or create controversy.

Alabama has played flawlessly, so they're going to rile people up by saying they're unbeatable.

Ohio State has looked good/not great, so they have to point out all the reasons why they could lose to Michigan or stumble against one of the other teams in the B1G. Also, their QB is having a Heisman year, so throw in all that hype.

Clemson had the QB controversy, the TLaw injury/close game, etc., so instead of the logical conclusion which is "Well Clemson is VERY good, but after NC State, it's going to be a breeze, they need to keep the controversy train going and recycle all the old talking points about Clemson's "potential" downfalls.

And in order to keep all the other "contending" teams interested, they've got to be able to make the case for Notre Dame, LSU, Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas, Oregon, Michigan, and so on.

It's all about creating controversy, not REALLY anaylzing from a reasonable perspective.

Building depth

Oct 17, 2018, 11:23 AM

Our coaches play a large majority of our players, and a good bit of time the backups are playing in meaningful situations...sort of a trial by fire.

Building depth does not necessarily correlate with blowing people out and trying to impress everybody.

The media, who isn't paying that much attention, doesn't know the percentage of the roster that are getting to play, and probably don't care.

Besides, sometimes it is advantagous to fly in under the radar...

I suppose I care enough to be curious and ask the question. But why do they choose Clemson as their whipping boy? Seems to me a team like Michigan would be much riper fruit for them, as the Wolverines haven't been relevant for decades now.

I agree that they seem to be overlooking Clemson. They hardly discussed us at all on the CFP show last night. However, they all had us in their top 4. Galloway has us at #2.

I think it’s because of our lack of a marquee matchup this season. We really won’t get a chance to prove we belong until the playoff semi final.

No, beating the ACC Coastal champion does not prove we belong....

Re: Clemson and the national media

Who are these pundits that aren't including Clemson in the playoff picture? Specifically. I've only seen a couple cases where we aren't considered a lock while 99 percent (hyperbolic expression) of the time we are included in the playoff predictions.

ESPN's analytics have us with the best chance of making the playoff (82 percent), the 2nd best chance to make it to the national championship game (47 percent) and the 2nd best chance to win it all (24 percent).

The only team ahead of us in those final two metrics is Alabama, and I would agree bases on the season thus far that they should be #1 and we should be #2.

Re: Clemson and the national media

The lack of respect is due in part because of what we had returning for this year. We played to very close games that could have gone either way. With the talent on this years team we should be dominanting and I know it's because we're playing a lot of players but the National media doesn't see that. They see a cfp team struggling to find themselves. We will have to take our respect on the field.

As long as Alabama, Ohio St and Notre Dame are undefeated there will be a segment of the media that gushes over them and anybody else is deemed of lesser value. We are at least ranked by most over Notre Dame at the present!

Case in point, from the article linked below...

"Though the Tigers have established themselves as one of the best rushing teams in the country behind Travis Etienne, all eyes will once again be on quarterback Trevor Lawrence and the quarterback situation as he gets more comfortable as the starter. Gaining more balance will be key as the Tigers prepare to play some of the more challenging rush defenses on their schedule..."

Seriously?!? Through six games, Clemson has one of the most balanced offenses in the entire country! This is just blatant ignorance. No, it's worse...it's laziness. How hard is it to pay attention in the job you are paid to do?? I don't get it.

Re: Clemson and the national media

Oct 17, 2018, 1:03 PM

I'm not really sure what Andrea Adelson was getting at with that write-up other than possibly trying to shift the focus to Trevor Lawrence because that is the en vogue thing to say about Clemson at the moment.

Technically, our offense hasn't been as balanced as in previous years given that we are running the ball 40 times per game while throwing it only 30 times per game, and our passing offense is 52nd compared to 4th for our rushing offense, but that has more to do with the fact that we've run the ball a ton late in the games where we had a big lead, and we were very run heavy after Lawrence got injured in the Syracuse game.

These statements are being made by people that have only watched a couple Clemson games all year, and they are just looking at raw stats to try to support their narrative without any analysis of the reason why the offensive breakdown is the way that it is.

Our offense has the ability to be more balanced if necessary, but it would be crazy not to "dance with the one who brung ya" and rely on our elite running game as long as it's working.

Re: Clemson and the national media

Oct 17, 2018, 2:27 PM

Through 6 games...

Clemson total rushing yards: 1,685
Clemson total passing yards: 1,501

If that isn't superb balance, please show me what is.

Cornstock, you say “these statements are being made by people that have only watched a couple Clemson games all year, and they are just looking at raw stats to try to support their narrative...” Obviously they aren’t, because the stat I’ve shown above is about as raw as it gets, and it speaks to the opposite of their narrative.

When the sun sets O'er the Mountain Height on Saturday, we will know whether we are contenders or pretenders... We will know if TL is Man Enough to slobber-knock his way thru to victory...We will know if the Defensive Front is able to justify turning down a few MILLION DOLLARS American. I am getting Jacked just thinking about it. This is a BIG game...

Eyes are on TL, then the rushing attack will only get better. The evidence supports the thesis:

I just saw ESPN say we had a 82% chance of making the playoff. Alabama had 81%. So they don't think that badly of us.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I just hink you're wrong. Who doesn't have us in?

Oct 17, 2018, 5:27 PM

Everyone has us in top 4, but lots of folks are waiting to see us play consistently with TL, including myself. You can love TL, but nobody can speak woth confidence based on his collegiate performance because his game time is pretty limited. If KB were still on the team, we may he #2, but there's little difference between #1 and #4.
