College Football Recruitment Is Sad...

May 13, 2022, 2:36 PM

I don't post often. But I do frequent TIGERNET nearly everyday at some point or another. I appreciate the updates and insight (for the most part) from others and the various opinions on topics related to Clemson athletics... especially football.

One thing I'll share is that I am beginning to lose my interest with recruitment. Even pre-Dabo era, I enjoyed the fun in tracking our top targets, announcement dates, and reasons for why they chose their school. However, with how recruiting has changed and the volatility in a commitment anymore, I must say, personally, it is sad. I feel like as a fan, you have to basically hold your breath until a kid enrolls and is physically on campus to feel comfortable that individual suiting up and playing for your program.

I am interested for further perspective on if others feel similarly and if you have any thoughts on how long before we can expect any impactful changes (whether NIL or other policy changes) that would benefit recruitment for Clemson football?

Nowadays, even if a player does sign and enroll, he can still put himself into the transfer portal after the second game of the season, if not earlier. College sports have become much too volatile for my taste.

Our program's refusal to keep up with modern CFB is even sadder.

The only thing that's going to save us is stricter NIL rules.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for Coach Swinney and his staff and I leave the recruiting up to them. I can’t recall a single time when he called me for advice. Therefore he must have a lot of confidence in his staff. One thing is for certain, any youngster who opts to be a Clemson Tiger will have all the opportunities in the world to be a success. Sit back and enjoy the ride. Dabo really is smarter than you!

It's pretty pathetic that you view Dabo as smarter than yourself. You can say he knows football. He has enough wins on his resume to justify that. But there is 0 evidence that he's a very intelligent man outside of that. You should improve your own self-esteem.

Dabo is a captain of industry and fine leader of men. He may not be a member of MENSA, but his success at football program building, managing the media/administration/boosters, and by all accounts is a great father/husband. That’s good enough for me to feel confident in his intellect.

It’s the culture that Dabo has created and prefers. If you are wanting what Jimbo and Kirby are doing then you might as well say that you want a new coach and I’m certain no one wants that to happen.

If this stays the way it is I can see coaches leaving the profession. Something about kids wanting to play for the love of the game, are teachable and helping them get to the next level is what I believe someone like Dabo loves.

Dabo has threaded the needle with some great QB play, coaching leadership, and the Power Rangers! Hopefully, Coach has some new tricks up his sleeve in 2022. Whether he does or doesn't, you make a great point about "the culture that Dabo prefers". Will Dabo adjust or accept a culture he does not prefer? He can cash out anytime just as many others in the work force have decided to do with much less exciting jobs ... 2022 will be a crucial year for Clemson Football & Coach Swinney.

Never followed recruiting much, but I will admit I used to

May 13, 2022, 4:09 PM

get a little excitement out of seeing the "4-star recruit has Clemson in his Top 5" headlines because I knew Dabo had a better than average chance to seal the deal.

But now when I see those headlines - my mind wanders to how much we'll have to pay the kid to come to our beloved University - knowing the $$$ is going to outweigh many selling points that Clemson offers. I don't get much enjoyment or excitement out of that...

NIL and the Transfer Portal mean you will now have to

May 13, 2022, 5:53 PM

RE-recruit the same players you already HAVE on your campus, all day, every day. The kind of money being thrown around now by the "Big" schools Collectives will sway even kids whose primary motivation is NOT money.

Recruiting ####, Im losing interest in the sport outright

May 13, 2022, 6:50 PM

NIL and portal have ruined the game, period. The lack of any sort of structure around an already absurd idea in nil and transfer portal has rendered the game nothing more than who can afford to buy the best players. The product on the field will degrade drastically in short order. I just have no interest in any of that.

I trust Dabo. When HE says that Clemson can’t compete then I will be as concerned as most of you are right now.
This ship will be righted quicker than most of you believe. The NCAA will be the big loser because they began this nonsense.
This could be a blessing in disguise because,at some point, they will have to confess to their errors. The good guys will win out in the long run … and Dabo is the best of the good guys.

College sports has needed a restructuring of the NCAA for a long time and it may be sooner than later. A good beginning will be to see a few new faces running the show.

I never get overly excited when a player commits.

And, I never lose a single second of sleep when a player decommits.

I pull for the players that run out of the tunnel on gameday.

To your point, you are exactly correct. You never know if a player will actually be around to play a single snap these days.

Re: College Football Recruitment Is Sad...

May 13, 2022, 11:35 PM

Yes, it is sad.

When I see we are in the mix with OSU, UGA, OK, blah blah blah I sigh.

Right now at least. Because I'm not confident.

We need some steam under our engines, just been a rough past year and a half with very little consolation. Massive staff turnover, key decommitments, the rise of UGA, the rise of the transfer portal and NIL, all have hugely affected us.

Imagine the pressure our staff is under right now. But what I am confident is - Dabo always pulls a rabbit out of the hat and gets extremely resourceful when everyone is doubting him.

Just seems we have regressed. A place like Clemson and our recent successes should have us in the top 3 of a few 5 stars imo.

I know NIL and coaching turnover has changed recruiting but hoping this is just a bump in the road and we can get back to consistently recruiting top 5 which will get us back to where we want to be at the end of the season.

I’m bias but I cannot see a recruit being disappointed in a commitment to Clemson and playing for a coach like Dabo. The place is heaven on earth imo.

Everyone needs to come the realization that we will never be truly “in it” for numerous elite recruits like we have the past 10-12 years. May get one or two that see the big picture, but unless the rules change its over for us at the very top. Adjust expectations and you’ll be fine.

Re: College Football Recruitment Is Sad...

The real issue is that Dabo and Clemson has set a higher bar to cross than most institutions. We have bigger goals for our players than molding them into football players. As commendable as this is we are drawing from an increasingly smaller pool year after year. There will be fewer and fewer " high character " guys to target and fewer still of those that are insanely gifted athletes. Though some are exaggerating our struggles on the recruiting trail , there has been a noticeable decline. This isn't Dabo's fault. And while college football itself is partially to blame , most of the blame lies at the feet of American citizens. What is happening to our program mirrors what is happening in our American culture. Our recent demise on the trail is simply a by-product of the damage our culture is experiencing.
