The state as a whole has 15% below the poverty line.
Couple that with a high cost of living and 40% seems about right.

property whether owned or rented is very expensive. Housing costs are the main factor. A weak 1br in Oakland will go for about $1600. The average studio in California is close to 1600 as well. You can take public transportation there, so gas doesn't need to be a factor in that particular area. Some people may want to live in a safer area though. Now imagine a place for a family of 4, the average size family. There is a concept called supply and demand. You may have heard of it. There is a lot of money in California, but there are a lot of people without money as well, just like many places. I am not even sure you can buy a place in somewhat decent condition for a family in Orange County for under 800k. My parents bought their place on the water for 65k in 1972. Middle class people used to be able to live like that. They were middle class at that stage and just starting out. There were orange groves everywhere That place is worth probably few million now. Housing costs are outrageous and aren't going down. Rents are going through the roof and have been for a couple decades. Teachers, police officers, nurses, etc, with families, are commuting sometimes a couple of hours each way to work due to housing costs. The tech industry has changed much of Northern California for good. The middle class have been squeezed out. Sure someone could go live in the desert or maybe the mountains, but people are crowded to an extent along the coast. Now imagine what it is like for someone working retail or at a restaurant. Housing costs are a killer. Utility costs are relatively low. Food costs at the market are not expensive. Income taxes are extremely high in California, but the poor aren't paying those taxes anyway. Sales tax is expensive of course. Anyway, California hasn't been a great place to live, unless you are wealthy, since the 1980's due to housing costs. There are no secret places in California to get cheap housing. Many people have turned California into a dream spot to move, but it isn't for most people. They get trapped there. Carolinas are the way to go. People are obviously flooding in there now. It will be interesting to "see" in 100 years if South Carolina ends up the same for the working poor due to housing costs.

Our food is cheap in California. It's known for being cheap too. It's just a simple fact. I like your posts generally, but you are off on this issue. As far as the city of San Francisco, everything is expensive there, but there are even ways to shop there that aren't expensive. California is much bigger than that one city though as you know. My hometown is Corona del Mar, which is part of Newport Beach and a very populated wealthy area is really not expensive for food depending where you shop. Grocery store prices in California as a whole are cheap though. If you shop in Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Brentwood, Santa Barbara, La Jolla, or maybe downtown San Fran, etc, yes they will be a touch more. Food in stores is cheap as a whole in California though.

The rest of us liberals on here realize that the conservative people that post here, outside of yourself, have the ability to be reasonable and are good people. Your mind has got to you and you attack all liberals personally daily. You stereotype consistently with broad and personal attacks. We're not a monolith. You insult daily.

The median home value in Los Angeles County is $566,400.
The current home median listing price is $629,625

The cost of living in Los Angeles county is among the highest in the world.

I hate the government programs which hand out so much to those who could/should but don't work and do what they can to be self sufficient.
In many cases it isn't the fault of the poor. If you can have more by staying home and suck gov teat why not do that? What if the government offered you as much as your present income to incentivies you to not work?
Don't start that 'but minimum wages is so low,' chit either. If it wasn't for our politicians opening our borders to low and medium skilled workers minimum wage would increase naturally according to the lower supply and higher demand for labor.
We will never get all our able bodied citizens back to work if we don't shut our borders and shut the spigot on that huge gov tittie.

"If it wasn't for our politicians opening our borders to low and medium skilled workers minimum wage would increase naturally according to the lower supply and higher demand for labor."
So how many employers do we lock up for hiring these cross-border job stealers? I can't recall any. You want to stop illegal immigration? Stop American business's from hiring them. Yet conservatives blame the immigrants and the politicians. Lock up the employers and you want have a border problem. Send the employers to jail....it will solve that problem.
The myth of poor people getting sooo much from the government that they don't want to work is exactly that....a myth.
Max welfare for a family of 4 is approx $900 a month. Where you gonna live and what are you going to feed your kids on that?
Poverty is a much more complex issue than "people just don't want to work".
Unfortunately, the other myth is that if you give the rich more money, it will benefit everyone. That is the most onerous of myths perpetuated by the rich and the ill informed.
After the Bush tax cuts....70% of the Fortune 500 spent 90% of their profits on stock buy backs. They didn't innovate, they didn't create new jobs....the put it in their own pockets.
If feeding the rich worked so great, and the top 10% own approx 90% of the wealth...why isn't that crap working?
The average middle class worker hasn't had a raise in 30 years. Through conservative and liberal governments. Now that's a fact. "liberal vs conservative" is the shiney object that people focus on....while everything stays the same. Trump was elected to change that, it doesn't appear that he is. Sanders was almost elected to change that...but the Dems wouldn't allow it. Wall St. wanted Hillary...and they almost got her.
But what's the mantra now? Let's try it again, 'trickle down' will work this time...honest.
It's a joke and it has nothing to do with 'liberal or conservative'. Trump and Sanders were right...the system is rigged....and they want more.

We don't go after people who hire illegals as hard as we should. The fine is 10 grand and we should collect every penny of that to fund ICE and a border wall.
Your number on max welfare is way off, Felix. The gov will subsidize one single family dwelling more than that. Food stamps will also pass out that much a month to a family of size. There's actually no limit that I've heard for foodstamps.
No sense in going off in the rant about taking from the poor and giving to the rich. The fallacy of that statement is that the poor earn nothing. Only those who work have actual earning, real property and all the things you want to tax to promote socialized government spending. Shame on you for not acknowledging these truths.
Bush was far from being right about a lot of his actions. The following quote borders on a straw man argument.
'If feeding the rich worked so great, and the top 10% own approx 90% of the wealth...why isn't that crap working?'
No one give to the rich, they earn. Sorry but that's economics.
I don't buy into the average middle class working getting a raise in 30 years. I've been an adult during those 30 years and I'm watch wages climb and fall with the economy.

We just disagree. There is over $2 Trillion stashed overseas to avoid taxation. It's perfectly legal.....and that's the problem. I doubt the poor or middle class had an influence in writing those laws.
General Motors paid zero federal taxes in 2015. It was perfectly legal. The idea that the system is not swayed toward the ruling class and those who fund them can be seen as naive.
Further, if 'trickle down' works....then why wouldn't 'trickle up' work? Let's face it, every penny that goes to the poor goes directly into the economy....every red cent. But tax breaks for corporations and the top 1%? It's taken out of the economy and stashed in Bonds, Hedge Funds, Tax exempt funds and offshore. Look up Warren Buffet's thoughts on the utility of the billions he owns. He along with Bill Gates and others are giving it away....that because sitting in accounts renders the money effectively meaningless. It has no utility and benefits no one.
The rich work, that is true. But so does the middle class. Do you really believe the tax code favors you or General Motors?
No my friend, the system is broken and it favors the wealthy. Middle class wages? Look at this article from Pew Research, a truly non-partisan and respected source:
"For most workers, real wages have barely budged for decades"
http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/10/09/for-most-workers-real-wages-have-barely-budged-for-decades/
