Not football related but Clemson related...

Mar 5, 2021, 1:19 AM

My grandson wants to apply to Clemson. His mom and dad are both Clemson grads. His grades are excellent. He has 2 years of a foreign language. He is being told he needs 3 years but doesn't want to take it. Does Clemson require three years?

Looking at the Clemson.Edu webpage, three years in the same foreign language are recommended. There is also a line that states students with fewer credits are encouraged to apply. My question is why would he shoot himself in the foot from the get go? His application will be compared to others that have the recommended three credits. College bound students know that most schools require the three credits and take the classes. What happens if he does not get admitted to Clemson and has to move forward with plan B and plan B requires the class? Can he justify in his application why he is not taking the third year? There are plenty of students with jam up resumes applying to schools.I have also watched the jam up kids cry when they do not get admitted to their dream schools. Students want their applications to stand out in a good way. If he is going to draw attention to himself, he had better have something great for them to read.

I agree with this.

Take the third year of the foreign language, and don’t take the chance of that being a problem.
It’s way too competitive to not do everything you can possibly do.
A lot of excellent students (including legacies) are getting left out.

I wish I can help. Best of luck to your grandson getting in

I hope your grandson gets in, but if not, he should be eligible for the Clemson Bridge Program. In the Bridge program, the students live on campus and have access to campus activities, including food plans. The main difference is for the first year they will attend classes at Tri County Tech. After that first year, if he has at least a 2.5 GPA and at least thirty semester hours, he will automatically be a Clemson sophomore in year two. He does not have to re-apply. It is a great program if he is not accepted. Our daughter went through it and we were very satisfied. Good luck.

M daughter is a current sophomore and admission was highly competitive when she was applying. Each year, there are more applicants and I promise you that the vast majority of applicants are taking that third year of foreign language. If he wants to go to Clemson, he needs to take that third year. He needs to have the minimum requirements, third year foreign language is one, and extra activities/classes that help him stand out. Good luck to him!

My son just got his acceptance letter last month. He only had 2 years of French in high school. He crushed the SAT and his grades were good (not great). He had the same concern last spring and went to a college fair where Clemson had a booth, he asked explicitly and was told it wasn't a requirement.

When you have a school as your "target school" you take the "recommended" as the "requirement". It isnt about what one want to do now but where one wants to be. You don't just do the required/recommend you excel and exceed the recommended and then do a little extra. Hustle makes the Clemson man.

I took 4 years of foreign languages - both french and latin (yes, two in the same senior year year). HS languages are not *that* tough but I also I also have a language/auditory processing disability. Now, once in college I had to get a language waiver (they required 12 credits at the time) and substitute with a lot of linguistics. Yay, disability services! But hey, odd things happen.

But back to admissions, you check every box. AP Calc - check, foreign langs - check, gifted studio art (magnet school) check, AP History - check, Lit - check, keyclub/volunteer service - check, 2 year varsity -check. Decent grades - check.

I wasn't the "top" GPA student but I did more of everything. Admissions sees a lot of "decent grades" but it also one of those things that the "intangibles" matter more in a lot of cases.

My daughter’s guidance counselor told her the third year was required, she was already in AP Spanish, though. But I suppose if the student has incredible SAT/ACT scores, or something else that can help compensate and helps the student stand out, the third year isn’t necessary. If he’s able to though, why not take it? He should call Admissions, they can give him all the correct info and recommendations.

My son got accepted to Clemson and the honors college and he is only taking 2 years of Chinese. His resume is pretty strong, so I would agree with other posters, it isn't a hard requirement.

Sorry, but putting it bluntly, sounds like your grandson may

not REALLY want to go to Clemson if he is not willing to take a course in high school that would give him a leg up. I do not know the young man at all, but just from what you wrote, his position sounds like it is coming from a very immature place. He is going to find out, many times, later in life that what he WANTS better get put secondary to what he NEEDS to get ahead, or just get along in the world. I would hate to have that knowledge begin for him with a rejection letter from Clemson that could have been avoided by him simply passing a high school language course.
