Not everybody can get into Clemson...

Feb 12, 2018, 10:02 PM

Sorry parents, but that's just how it is.

Doesn't matter how unfair it is that your 4th generation kid with a 4.5 GPA and 35 ACT score who was valedictorian and earned 9 varsity letters and was captain of the charity & volunteer clubs got waitlisted or Bridge'd.

Clemson is very high-profile all over the country these days, and the school simply isn't going to double in size. Lots of worthy students are going to (inevitably) be turned away. Shoot, there's no way I would have gotten in if I had applied this year or beyond

Instead of moaning and groaning over it, why not at least give the Bridge program some fair consideration? Dabo recently spoke out against the immediate transfer rule...he said sometimes, kids need to learn to stick it out. I think the same philosophy applies here.

These Bridge kids are lucky to have the chance to work their way into Clemson when so many more have been turned away! They get a very similar kind of experience for a year+, then get to graduate like any Clemson student who had started there from day 1

I understand why it would be disappointing not to make it in from the start. And exploring other college choices may be the best route for certain kids who get accepted into the Bridge too. But please refrain from lashing out against the University admissions folks for simply trying to do their (very difficult) jobs.

Nobody wants to be told "no"....But to a greater extent, nobody wants to be the one to have to say "no"

It was smart of you to list schools with bigger enrollments than Clemson, really helps make your point when the other schools have more spots to offer.

Much larger schools, so there was never a question of acceptance in those schools. They don’t need bridge programs

We are in agreement! AU and Alabama are good since they accept early (rolling admission process). US News has Florida as #9 public university and has a 7-year med program.

Only Florida is widely considered a better school than Clemson. Thus of course the admissions would be more lax.

Again she got in those schools because they are MUCH larger schools and have plenty of room. If you had wanted your daughter to have the experience she should have stayed and did it.. the statement should have IF your daughter really wanted to go to Clemson so bad, she should have stayed and did the bridge or tried changing her major to get in

I think you’re right. My daughter loves Clemson football but it seems many students now don’t care as much. But it really wasn’t a great fit since she wants to be a doctor.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why wouldn't Clemson be a good fit for someone wanting

Feb 13, 2018, 7:34 PM

to be a doctor?!?

There are many Clemson alums who are doctors. Look at the state medical schools and you'll see that Clemson is the most represented undergraduate school at both.

If you're talking about a combined BS/MD program, then Clemson obviously can't help with that like Florida can. It doesn't diminish the fact that Clemson is great for pre-med if that is what someone is interested in.

I'm from Georgia. Everybody in the state of Georgia wants to go to UGA. UGA can't admit everyone, so they have a similar program to the Bridge at Gainesville state, which THOUSANDS of kids are happy to get into every year as a means to eventually end up at UGA

Feb 13, 2018, 4:31 PM [ in reply to Re: Not everybody can get into Clemson... ]

In previous years the classes were at Tricounty. Housing was elsewhere, and no dining facility,. They could use Fike, the library etc, but otherwise not much in the way of Clemson facilities.

How can you say "Clemson has room for them"? Don't get me wrong, I am in favor of it, but I don't see it as just a scam to make the school look better and improve rankings.

The reality is that nobody gives two ##### where you went to undergrad

Feb 13, 2018, 10:26 AM

In fact, outside of maybe finance/engineering, nobody cares about your undergrad degree at all.

Parents, do yourself a favor. Send your kid to the cheapest option. It's better to go to UNCC and graduate top of your class.

Trust me. It's all a racket. It's good for conversation at tailgates but otherwise you're better off just saving your money and being the biggest fish in the smallest pond.

My brother learned this the hard way attending Duke. He always tells me he wishes he had just gone to UNCC, saved the money, and been big man on campus so to speak. Having a more expensive Duke degree did literally nothing for him when it came time to apply to law school. Nothing. It's a numbers game.

Don't believe the lies. Your child isn't special. Do what's best for your wallet and if your kids are truly great then the cream will rise to the top regardless of the letters on their diploma.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Quite true that the cream of the crop

Feb 13, 2018, 12:06 PM

Has been proven to rise regardless of undergrad institution . Intelligence and drive absolutely prove to be a million times more important. Whether attemding Harvard or a small relatively poorly known school, the best and brightest succeed similarly. So you’re very right that undergrad matters little(with the possible exception of a few fields) and drive and intelligence determine much more
