D has given up 30+pts 9 times in the last 2yrs. Concerned?

Apr 19, 2017, 8:12 AM

2016
Lou (36), FSU (34), Pitt (43), VT (35), Bama (31)

2015
NCST (41), SCar (32), UNC (37), Bama (45)

So that's 9 times in 30 games. Seems like a lot. What's crazy is that we were still 7-2 in those games even after giving up such big point totals. I think the defense the past two years has been good, but this stat does point to their inconsistency. Blame turnovers or just plain taking our foot off the gas as some of the reasons for it, but for whatever reason, we've just been feast or famine on that side of the ball.

With us breaking in a new QB, I doubt we'll be able to win these kind of games this coming year. To have a good season, I think we'll need the defense to play with a lot more consistency particularly vs the better offensive teams.

Like GeeVille, I do not have major concerns for next season.

I think the offense will have better efficiency ratings this year. Not saying we will be more run heavy, just more of efficient. Fewer three and outs over the course of the season. I just think that the offense will be overall more focused.

This is going to be like Tennessee after Peyton left. Not as wide open, but efficient and championship caliber.

A legitimate post ^^^
I love our DEFENSE but this issue has always mystified me.
We no longer have DW to HELP assure we will outscore anyone.

Not to sound bad, but you also don't have DW to throw the intercrptions that put several of those points in that board that the OP isn't considering. Give a team short field, their bound to get it in a few times.

Apr 19, 2017, 8:29 AM

We may not be built for shootouts and we can't depend on the D to be on the field for 100 snaps AND hold opponents under 20 points.

Our O is going to have to be efficient in moving the chains and staying on the field. If we're going to be run-first, we're going to have to be very good at it. If we find we're playing catchup, our best option will likely be Hunter Johnson.

Our QB the last 2 years

Apr 19, 2017, 8:44 AM

Led us to play open and fast. Coaches will likely reign this in before 2017. Our coaches do a great job of gameplanning to our strengths, and this year our strength is on defense.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not Concerned!

Apr 19, 2017, 8:45 AM

Don't put all the credit on Watson for scoring points. Clemson scored more points per game under Tajh Boyd in his last 2 years than Watson did in each of his 3 years. This offense will do well behind the O-line that we will have. It's a team effort and I think where we lack in QB we will make up on the O-line and the other skill positions. This entire team is very good on both sides of the ball and the starting QB (whoever that turns out to be) might surprise us with his skills.

Bama has done it 5 times in the same 30 game span. Clemson 2x, Arkansas 2016 and Ole Miss 2x.

Further, they played offenses which were significantly worse than Louisville, FSU and UNC. Are you concerned about Bama's D?

I'm not concerned, nor will this be a concern in 2017. We have other things to worry about.

I wouldn't make that assumption. don't think it's worrying at all. In fact, read the punctuation - it was asked with a ? mark. Not stated as worrying.

Thought it was a good topic for discussion, that's all.

Re: D has given up 30+pts 9 times in the last 2yrs. Concerned?

Apr 19, 2017, 9:53 AM

In this day and age of CFB, giving up 30+ points in only 1/3 of your games is pretty good. Look at the metrics!

- 11th in scoring defense in 2016
- 19th in scoring defense in 2015
- 2nd in scoring defense in 2014

So on average, you're looking an average of the 10th best scoring defense in all of college football over the last 3 years. What in the world is there to be concerned about?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

^ Agreed b/c math.***

We run a high risk defensive scheme. Pick your poison!

Apr 19, 2017, 10:04 AM

We have given up some big plays and a lot of points from time to time. We have also led the nation in sacks and tackles for loss over the same period. CBV runs an aggressive defense. He brings pressure in an attempt to overwhelm the offense and catch them behind the sticks. The plan is to put the opposing offense in such a hole that they cannot get out of it and have to punt.

If you bring that much pressure, there will be times when the offense can bust a big play - maybe even score a lot of points. So, what do you want to do? Sit back and keep everything in front of you? Avoid the big play and hope the opposing offense makes a mistake and has to punt?

Or, do you want to use the talent we have on defense and force them back - maybe even generate turnovers?

I think that CBV knows what he is doing. Sure, I rather that we not give up big plays. But, is that something that will happen when we bring the kind of pressure that has been shown the past several years? Don't focus on just one defensive statistic. Look at all the numbers. Aren't we doing some things well? Might the "good" and "bad" be two sides of the same coin?

Apr 19, 2017, 11:48 AM [ in reply to We run a high risk defensive scheme. Pick your poison! ]

Also, an additional strategy behind CBV's aggressive style is to get the offense back on the field quickly. Whether the defense gets a 3 and out or gives up a TD, the time of possession is going to be quick. Then our offense is back on the field tiring out their defense again.

By the 4th quarter, the opposing defense gives out due to the sheer # of plays and time spent on the field. Alabama scored 31 points in the NCG, but all their drives were quick scores or 3-and-outs. By the time the 4th quarter came around, their defense was gassed.

Re: D has given up 30+pts 9 times in the last 2yrs. Concerned?

That shouldn't be your only criteria. Take a look at overall defensive performance in those games. How many points were actually allowed by the defense? How many turnovers put the defense on a short field? How many three and outs did the offense have that caused the d to be gassed? Too many variables to just list final points allowed.

Re: D has given up 30+pts 9 times in the last 2yrs. Concerned?

Apr 19, 2017, 12:40 PM

While I hear what you are saying, and stats don't lie, I feel there are other factors as well. While there have absolutely been a few games where a certain play call gashed them (Note Dame Wheel route, Pitt shovel, etc) there has been even more success. One reason those highs cores don't scare me as much is how the game has changed. With the evolution of offeses, passing games, spreads etc, more points are scored all over the nation. Imo, the days of winning games 17-9 consistently are over, and shut outs less common, making the ones last year so remarkable. More often even mediocre tears are able to muster 14-20 points in a losing effort. Look at average scoring of bad teams, it's way up from say 20-30 years ago. Lastly, one thing BV does is plays a lot of backups throughout the season, and not just in garbage time. The amount of live game action they see throughout the season are why they stay consistently good every year, rather than just lights out every 2-3.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

not to sound mean, but Clemson's offense scored rather

Apr 19, 2017, 2:33 PM

quick some times and this kept the D on the field more. There were also some turnovers, Louisville for instance, where the D was put in a bad position. And even though we gave up 30 in nine games, we have only lost two games in these two years. I think we'll be fine.
