Yes Big Dave was a cancer and heard that from someone that is very close to the program. NCAA had also asked certain individuals to steer clear of the guy if that tells you anything.

How do you figure?

Jan 1, 2023, 11:50 PM

DJ got way better from last year to this. Nobody got worse under Streeter. The #1 DRAFT PICK left pretty good. And are you saying Deshaun Watson was worse in his last year, when we WON THE NATL CHAMPIONSHIP?

Some of you dudes just make crap up in an effort to be negative. Who lives their life like that??

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: How do you figure?

Jan 2, 2023, 9:49 PM

Deshaun did improve, but he also refused to work with Streeter and used an outside coach. Bryant, Brice, and Johnson all regressed as passers, and I think the argument can be made they did better after getting away from Streeter. Lawrence came in extremely polished. It's widely believed he regressed every year. Jacksonville's coach has said they had to completely reteach him fundamentals and he's just now getting the hang of it. He had all the talent in the world but did not leave NFL-ready. DJ wowed everyone in high school. He came in as a freshman and broke records. He was the second worst QB in the country last year. You say he improved, but he also had a much easier route in the first half of the season this year. Last year, he was pummeled by UGA which ruined his confidence for the season. This year, it took half the season for the same to happen. In the latter half of this season, he was every bit as bad as he was last year. I gave you the stats last week.

Ouch. Not being in that inner circle and talking to players, seeing practices etc we really don't know. Some are saying the same about DW4 and Trevor. We'll get some ideas next year how he is with Oregon state but, what hurts is future recruits. The same thing gets said about the oline, playing in a pansy conference etc.

The negative recruiting no doubt has probably hurt us but to what extent.

Jan 1, 2023, 9:13 AM

Trevor Lawrence's qb rating improved every year. After 3 years at Clemson, he was the number 1 overall pick.

I'm not sure how you can improve what he did his freshman year.

I'm sure Alabama will get the same scrutiny for Bryce young this year....

Re: Not a good look, DJ and family may have set this program back 10 years

Jan 1, 2023, 9:18 AM

Trent Dilfer, known as a QB guru, says that Streeter doesn't develop QB's well. Oregon State coaches are saying that DJ's.mechanics digressed at Clemson under Streeter and they believe they can fix. DJ's family are probably just repeating what they are hearing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Not a good look, DJ and family may have set this program back 10 years

Jan 1, 2023, 5:38 PM

Who cares what Dilfer says. What did Dilfer do for DJ? Nothing.

he coached Lipscom Academy and is now at UAB... lets see how the UAB QB does.

DJ has demonstrated what his ceiling in this program was. I did not see much improvement from last year to this year. You could see he had worked on getting some touch on the ball, other than that he was pretty much the same physically. He did a much better job at game management and just throwing it away when there wasn't anything there vs forcing plays. On the flip side he does not have much pocket feel, his feet get set and he reads half the field. Does not appear to be able to read coverages and go to a checkdown. It seems like he has one guy in mind and that is where the ball is going. I don't know if that is what they are teaching but it would be hard to believe that would be the case.

Cade doe feel the pocket, he moves in the pocket, he steps into his passes, he does look off the defense and he throws a very catchable ball. I think (which I realize doesn't matter)he might put too much air under his long balls (results are backers can close the gap) but they are catchable balls and well placed. He needs another 10 pounds, hope he weighs in at 210-ish next year and gets alot of time with his receivers in the off season. Hope he also gets alot more situational awareness of what is going on in the game... that run that ended the half to run out the clock with no points was pure youth and adrenalin. He also showed alot of grit as he spent alot of time under pressure and on his back with 300 pounders laying on him and he got up and went back to work.

Jan 1, 2023, 9:27 AM

We certainly didn't look to be at the same level as any of those teams in the semi-finals. Recruiting and coaching are the keys. You have to have the talent to begin with and then you have to develop them into a team that can compete with the Big Boys. You also have to put together great game plans and be able to make effective in-game adjustments.

We used to do a lot of this very well but we have to admit to ourselves we have taken a step back and just work through it to get back to where we once were.

Re: Streeter was a tough (but not super talented) QB for us but

Jan 1, 2023, 10:43 AM [ in reply to Streeter was a tough (but not super talented) QB for us but ]

I think part of it was the system. DJ is not an RPO QB, but Streeter did not tweak the offense to fit DJ. No one fears him in the run game. Also gives him too much to think about. Honestly, he should not have been recruited for the current system. Which is not a good scheme by the way.

I hope he does well at OSU.

Re: Not a good look, DJ and family may have set this program back 10 years

Maybe he's right. Maybe DJ has been getting coached to stare down one receiver and then heave the ball out of bounds if they aren't open. Maybe DJ was coached to fatten up 30 extra pounds to improve his speed, elusiveness and endurance. Or maybe DJ just isn't that into playing football and prefers to spend his spare time doing things unrelated to getting better at football. I can certainly agree that our QB coach has done nothing to distinguish himself but it does take two to tango.

Streeter mentioned on occasion that DJ would hold the ball until he felt a receiver was wide open. How many throws did he attempt at trying to throw a guy open. Understandable though he could not hit the wide open receivers either.

Jan 1, 2023, 9:59 AM

To get over the DJ years but I’m confident that the team will recover. DJ received special treatment at Clemson. You know that and I know that. The team certainly was aware of what was happening but none of them will ever come forth and admit it. Nor should they. We will never know all the circumstances that lead up to his favoritism with the coaches and frankly, I don’t give a darn, He is gone and I suspect his absence isn’t missed by his teammates. He may become the star player he was advertised to be at Oregon and I hope that he does.

We have a lot more to work with in Klubnik but he needs to be surrounded with better teammates. We will know a little more about the Tiger team after spring ball. Linemen and receivers need to be upgraded OR up coached, You can’t be a team like the four we saw yesterday without OLs and Wrs. I’m not sure Clemson has those players right now. Dabo has shown that he isn’t going to use the portal and perhaps he doesn’t need to. The right guys may be on campus right now. We shall see.

ONE THING FOR CERTAIN ILL BE THERE AS LONG AS THIS EIGHTY PLUS BODY HOLDS UP. GO TIGERS

I think that family is still under the delusion that DJ is some elite NFL-bound QB. It's clear that after 2019 he lost interest in football and was just going through the motions to please his family and not let down his teammates. He didn't develop because he wasn't mentally into it.

This will be clear after next season when Cade takes Clemson back to the CFP and DJ is on the bench at Oregon State.

DJ‘s problem is not mechanics or even coaching.

His problems are decision-making, judgment, intuition, vision and leadership.

I only met him briefly, but all of his teammates say he’s a great guy. I’m sure he is. But he has a long way to go with respect to the mental aspects of football.

I agree. DJ has always seemed very reserved and has major confidence issues. Explains why Dabo treated him like a Faberge Egg. All of his problems are in his head. I don’t think he has the mentality of a college QB, much less an NFL QB.

I attended the Clemson graduation ceremony 2 weeks ago where DJ was supposed to walk the floor. All of his other teammates were there. He wasn’t. He couldn’t get out of Clemson fast enough and get back to his West Coast people.

DJs Mom seems like a nice person. I really feel bad for DJ. I really wonder if he even likes football or if it was a way to get approval or get away from Dave and the Aunts and Uncles.
I wish DJ the best at his new spot and we should remember that he is a grown man and that his loud mouth family doesn’t speak for him. Until he says or posts something shifting the blame off himself don’t him accountable for what his relatives say.

Back 10 years and into the playoffs next year. Take my words to the bank. When I wrote a football blog, I got the national champion right 9 out of 10 times. It’s a bet I’m willing to make.
Klubnik will be fantastic and next season he will be ready. Counting the Orange Bowl I believe he’s lost only 2 games in his entire life, but maybe this was his first loss as a starter. The kid can bring it, but college football is a big step up. Watson wasn’t really ready his freshman year and Tal was just a freak of nature.

We can say that we gave DJ every chance in the world to succeed and he couldn’t get to done.

A rational coaching staff would have benched him last year for Puma and run the option, but we finished the season with him and didn’t even allow a 5 star #1 QB to practice with the first team until the regular season was over. Unfortunately, when we did…
