High FBall IQ only - We're there signs..

Nov 14, 2021, 11:45 PM

Last year that DJ would look like this THIS year?

There HAD to have been signs, right?

What did you see in those 2 games he played, anything as an omen to this year?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nope. There were none.

Nov 15, 2021, 12:01 AM

Seriously.

Good footwork. Not flat-footed and moved well in the pocket. Great accuracy. No interceptions.

No early signs. However, coaches spend their whole career s looking at players. They watch film, they go to clinics. They have friends on other teams and friends that are even in the NFL. 10, 15, 20 years in the game. Plus they see players in practice.

The coaching staff knew his short coming s. They didnt just wake up after the GA game scratching their heads.

They must just feel he has an upside. That it may be worth taking the criticism for what's to come later.

Plus no tape on him for the Irish game. Now every defense trys to take away what he does well. Forcing him out of his comfort zone.

I also wonder if something is wrong with his shoulder. The kind of injury you fix after the season. Those ball that sail 20 yards over someone's head points to that.

You're right the coaches chart every play.

The things he's fundamentally struggling with this year were not present last year.

Teams are doing nothing special to counteract what DJ showed last year. He's simply not playing up to that level. He looks nothing like the guy who had over 900 yards and completed 67% of his passes with 3 TDs and 0 INTs. Mechanically he is radically different this year. Much more stiff and squeezing the ball. Not near as fluid and natural as he was last year. None of the bad habits we see this year were present last year. He has yet to get in his "zone" this year. Keep hope alive ;)

There was more pieces on the O line, ETN as running back, a little more experience at WR position and he wasn’t being pressured as the starter. Also he came in in mop up duty in most cases, so Tony Elliot probably didn’t give home the more in depth plays to run ( if TE has in depth plays).

The OP is talking about the 2 games DJ started last year.

Not really. Teams were taking away ETN and easy throws. They were essentially playing right into his strength forcing him to hang in and throw it deep. We were still 1-1 in those games and had to come back in that win, so the stats were misleading.

We were 1-1, but the 1 loss wasn't because of the offense. DJ threw for 439 yards and we scored 40 points in that loss. ND was certainly taking away ETN, but DJ still had to complete passes and he made several great throws in that game. I'm not sure what's different this year, but no way the DJ from this season would put up the stats he had in that game even if you give him the same roster and ND runs the same exact defense.

Re: No Signs Whatsoever ---

Nov 15, 2021, 12:30 AM

He was just a gifted calm kid that looked like he had grasped half the playbook and executed with precision...efficientness...went through progressions...and poised in adverse environments and situations.

I was really looking forward to him knowing all the plays and just come out slinging it with more confidence this year.......but something just effed with his circuitry and wiring in the offseason. It didn't help either that there were potential weapons that were set to help him...decided to transfer suddenly.

Who transferred? None of the guys that have transferred were going to be starters this year.

Yep he popped a fuse in the Georgia game and it has yet to be replaced.

Re: High FBall IQ only - We're there signs..

Actually yes...

If you go back, when he was in cleanup the drives usually stalled. Same inconsistent throws. You could chalk that up to playing with second team in cleanup. Then he lit it up at ND and I think everyone said well we got us a ready made QB!

Well when it was all on him he wasn't really ready for the full monte, and he was not alone.

O-Line has not been a consistent set of guys all year, they have had trouble getting in sync. Injuries, moving guys around, more injuries, move guys around more...

Receivers have underwhelmed, not sure what the deal is. Much improved with Beaux Collins on the inside, and Ross on the outside. Still way too many dropped balls when DJ does hit them in the hands.

Running backs... another injury/portal mess. We went from really deep to nobody left ...

Now to DJ specifically, he has the talent. The pass to Collins at the end of the half was a thing of beauty. It appears to me that he may be thinking to much pre snap, the stuff does not come naturally yet and he tries to hard to do everything perfectly which makes the throws out of rhythm... he is very streaky. He has done well when the tempo is up which is why I think it may be the mental part, when he doesn't have time to think too much he does better.

I don't know if the play calls are set and the action is RPO but its an RPO look only, the play has a set handoff, or he just won't pull and run... it sure looks like he could do himself and the offense alot of good if he would pull it ... keep the defensive end and linebackers honest...

To me it looks like everything is pre-snap. They seem to have abandoned any RPO or read option with him in there for at least 4 or 5 weeks. The last couple of weeks it seems they’ve been calling for him to look off the pre-snap read before throwing it, which has led to some wild/head scratching throws.

Nov 15, 2021, 1:11 AM

Instead of cutting half the playbook and trying to call around a guy’s weakness, why not just put the other, less talented, more consistent guy in there and run the offense?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"Inconsistent throws"

Nov 15, 2021, 11:36 AM [ in reply to Re: High FBall IQ only - We're there signs.. ]

He completed 67% of his passes with 0 interceptions last year. He was FAR more consistent.

The only sign I can think of is not really a sign, but perhaps something inside his mind; Last year he was filling in for Trevor .He knew his job was to manage the those two games he was called on to start, but without having the expectations he has this year.
This year ,the job was his to win, or lose .And while having the talent maybe he just is not a DW4 or a T.L. when it comes to putting a season on his shoulders.

Re: High FBall IQ only - We're there signs..

One thing and only one is the reason for DJ having this kind of year. Having that GA defense in the first game destroy his confidence in his own abilities. It was kind of like having the biggest battle of a war happen on the first day. He has been looking at the defensive line more than his receivers since that game. Kind of a good reason most coaches like to schedule so called cup cake games early. Gives both sides of the ball tie to settle in and learn who they are.

Re: High FBall IQ only - We're there signs..

Nov 15, 2021, 11:40 AM

Yes.

Even last season DJ threw the sideline out routes over the WRs' heads a good many times.

The biggest difference from last season to this season in terms of his physical ability is that he was letting the ball rip down the field last year because he had full confidence in himself and in his 3 targets to come down with the ball.

This year he seems to be very unsure of himself as he is letting the ball go.

Doubt has crept into his mind about what will happen on the other end of each pass.
