Justyn Ross releases custom merchandise thanks to new policy

Are you a big Justyn Ross fan? You can wear that fandom literally on your sleeve(s). Ross joined the mix of players selling customized merchandise -- in Ross' case a branded T-shirt and hoodie (check out the examples below) -- after the NCAA adopted an interim Name, Image and Likeness policy for thi Read Update »

This looks like a good sign that he is closer to playing. I don’t play and I can’t get a shirt deal lol

That TNet is going to announce every ####### new endorsement from a Clemson player. This is going to be terrible. Not for the players, for us TNet users.

Maybe a 100k education wasn't enough for these yoyo's

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nope. Based on the work they do and the revenue

Jul 2, 2021, 6:52 AM

They generate, $25K a year isn’t enough for some of them. You think Trevor was worth more than $25k a year in the free market? Really?

Lots of layers won’t make a dime on this because nobody’s going to pay them to advertise. Only the best of the best. Kind of like capitalism isn’t it?

From the stories that I have seen today about what our players are hoping to do to make money, I just don't get all the fuss. This new NIL policy will have a tough learning curve for the players and I hope they are not disappointed when the dollars don't roll in.

I got an idea let them pay back the money they got for their education ...that would be a great lesson in economics.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How is that a great lesson? And my guess is

Jul 2, 2021, 7:29 AM

You’re politically conservative and would argue til you’re blue in the face that people’s income should be based on their merit and value...except in this case.

Because the only thing stronger than your capitalist values are your resistance to change.

Must be my christian faith and beliving that hard work paysoff as well as not being handed everything
and having to work for it. 100k education over 4 years is nothing to try and devalue. When a person has to pay for these things it changes your perspective on life. Nothing is free in life.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How are you conflating this with Christian faith?

Jul 3, 2021, 7:53 AM

Trying to set up a senarionwherenthebother side isn’t Christian if they disagree with you? That’s a strange maneuver.

How is it that benefiting from their own image and like as something being “handed to them?” Be specific.

And you can’t argue that Trevor Lawrence is worth 25k his last year in college, but 30 million the following year, with no reasonable value in between.

So you just use vague platitudes without backing up your argument.

Re: How are you conflating this with Christian faith?

Jul 3, 2021, 5:49 PM

What is handed to them is the ability to get an education that others have to pay for.
How many times have you heard or seen a regular student have to drop out and not be able to finish school because of money problems? Yet you hear of the big time athletes, getting to the Pro's and making their money, than returning to school for the education - the question is- do they pay for it- I am thinking they still get it for free. If I am wrong it will not be the first time in my life and I am sure it won't be the last. How many football players on the team are from South Caroline- a four education for a Bachelor's degree is roughly $130,000. If you come from outside the state of South Carolina- you are looking @ $240,000. These guys are feed well- great medical, Justine was sent to a doctor in Pittsburgh, not something the average student gets.

Now look at the average kid in Clemson- makes $7.25 an hour.
If they were able to work 80 hours a week while in school- they would make roughly over the four years $100,000. which would not be able to pay for the four year education. They also get no stipend - unlike the sports people.

IDK if it's against the rules for schools to help with this but I doubt it is. Soon enough schools will be measured by how well their kids sell which will be influenced by how well they support their kids. We should try to be the cutting edge.

Re: TNET: Justyn Ross releases custom merchandise thanks to new policy

Jul 2, 2021, 8:25 AM

This is exactly what I thought- why should I buy an $80 jersey the gluttons keep for themselves, when I can buy something these guys will directly benefit from.

No F’n brainer here. As far as I’m concerned, it would be great if apparel profits went to athletes overall. Let the monsters starve a bit,

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly. This isn’t adding new money to college sports

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So, if a kid has to decide between football, going to class

Jul 1, 2021, 7:48 PM

and studying or managing their new found money making "businesses", with pressure and ill-conceived motives coming from all sides, where do you believe their priority is going to fall??

This experiment is not going to end well for the student athletes, Clemson or the NCAA!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Put a little more thought into it

Jul 1, 2021, 11:08 PM

That's obviously a risk now, but if a kid lets his grades slip, guess what? He faces discipline from the team and jeopardizes both his scholarship and his endorsement.

It's literally a problem that will solve itself. And you know Dabo will be extra hard on guys that fall into this trap. I'm not worried about our team at all.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Honestly, I believe the free market will control the NIL

Jul 2, 2021, 12:47 AM

You either have star power or you don't.

TL and ETN could sell. The Power Rangers could sell. O-line...not so much.

I believe it will play out. If Ole Miss, suddenly becomes a contender, then you'll know shenanigans are happening.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Honestly, I believe the free market will control the NIL

Jul 2, 2021, 11:29 AM

It seems to me as if this will create a loophole for shenanigans. At first I wondered how much market there will be for this stuff, because frankly, I don't see buying person-branded clothes. (Of course, I may be in the minority with that opinion.) However, the real dollars will roll in from moneybag alums who either buy a boat load of a kid's merch before he enrolls or promises to buy a boat load when he enrolls.

If Ole Miss becomes a contender, it could be because there is suddenly huge demand for player merch in Oxford, and maybe the demand is from one or two people with a lot of dollars.

What should Clemson's cut be of merchandise sporting

Jul 2, 2021, 10:23 AM

the paw, name, and/or our uniforms? And how about our trademarked colors? Without those insignia, images, and the connection to the school, how much value do these players really bring on their own? I would think 50% off the top would be a fair starting point, with rights to prohibit the use of our imagery at any time and for any reason.

Hi! I'm wildblulou! Buy my shirt!

Hi! I'm wildblulou, starting wide receiver for the Clemson Tigers! Buy my shirt!

Unless it's original artwork or other manufacture / product sales element, most of this NIL money will be due to leveraging their school's imagery and its connection to the school's fans, who would be the school's fans whether or not any one individual ever suited up for them or not. I hope the program intends to capitalize on that as this unfolds.

You have a point

Jul 2, 2021, 3:56 PM

but at the same time, the schools get their cut from the NCAA's $1.1B in revenue, made off the players' ability to entertain.

I won't be surprised to see a school complain about it and get a rule made or something, nor would I be surprised to see nothing happen. It's not gonna cut into any school's bottom line.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: You have a point

Jul 3, 2021, 11:49 AM

NIL should definitely affect schools' bottom lines as sponsors may easily cut back on giving to the school and instead give to a player or pool of players. There are finite budgets at play, and now more options to invest to attract and appeal to a school's fan base. That's why if players are going to profit by leveraging the connection to a school, or using program logos and insignia, the school should benefit, and certainly be in a position to prohibit their use if they do not want to associate with a particular business or entity. It works that way today - not just anyone can sell Clemson related merchandise or leverage our logos with promotions, they have to have permission and pay the school a royalty. That should exist with players.

Today's players are compensated with tuition, room, board, now a cash stipend, plus hundreds of thousands of dollars annually worth of state of the art training tools and guidance. I'm happy they can capitalize on the NIL scope, but if they use the Clemson brand to do so, the school should get its due cut. There isn't a football sponsor fairy out there that's going to swoop in and create more money to throw around just because players can now generate their own.

The players are supposed not to be allowed to use school uniforms or trademarks. Some may have used them now, as this is new and rules will need to learned.
