Vacation Question
Apr 8, 2021, 3:30 PM
|
|
Any of y'all ever pay for a vacation, get to your destination, and IMMEDIATELY regret your choice of location?
FBCoachSC® isn't having a good time at all in Gatlinburg. I am not sure what he expected, but it certainly is not living up to expectation. He says everyone is a tigermanac® from up North just there to get a few slices of pizza.

The Dominican Republic. Got there and after trying to eat a couple of meals at the resort and realizing that the food sucked, and that there was nothing to drink but their national version of Budweiser (Presidente is what it's called), and that there's really not that much to do, I was ready to go home after about 6 hours.
If all Carribean countries suck like that, I don't wanna try to go to another one.

Isn't DR where you pretty much have to stay on the resort property, and the resorts have armed guards?
Yeah..there are islands in the south Bahamas you can go to and not see anyone for several days if thats your thing.

a prison outside the gates. Armed guards standing at the gates, some on patrol, etc. They usher you into the resort, and then when you leave, its straight back to the airport.
Bimini is no heaven, but you probably won't get mugged. There are def parts of Nassau to stay away from, but you can camp on a lot of the islands. All you need to worry about are mosquitos on land, and tiger sharks in the water.

on the resort property and flat out ask "hey, yall got some cocaina?", and he walked me into a dehumidifier room, closed the door behind him and opened a drawer that has a couple of dozen pre-packaged grams of coke. Pretty good coke too.
I didn't last too long at the company who sponsored the trip.

Wife of won two award trips in 2019...the national one was in Cabo and was incredible. First class everything and you didn't want to leave. The regional one was to DR, and this was when everyone was getting killed down there. Just a trashy dump.
Atlantis/Nassau isn't much better, but then you hit the Abacos in the same country, and it's incredible.

next trip will be some of the southern islands. Since Eleuthera/Harbor Island is only 50 miles from Nassau, its a quick puddle jumper flight.
Might be a good late fall trip.

The Mrs. and I have been vacation experts over our married life, and other than a trip to Disney when Joonyer was like 7 or 8 (which we enjoyed) we've not done the traditional sheepcations that the average culturally stunted family endures in the name of tradition...just because the SC Coast or NC mountains was good enough for your parents doesn't mean you can't show some creativity and get out on the edge a little bit. We decided from day one we would see the country, and the world and not throw away money on any place that has a hootie and the blowing fishes marketing commercial or the equivalent thereof shilling for it.

Having a partner that is willing to challenge you to step out of your comfort zone, including vacation destinations, is important.
While I had great family trips, we did the normal stuff too: Myrtle, Gatlinburg, Vegas. If I am spending money to go on vacation, its going to be something fun, something worth it, and something interesting.

I got my first pedicure the first time we went to Charleston. I also proposed to my wife that weekend.
The second time we went to Charleston together, was the second part of our honeymoon. So yeah, pretty big occasions.

One time in Greece - but didn't really pay for it
Apr 8, 2021, 4:03 PM
|
|
(wife and I took a two week trip on miles / points. only thing we paid for was food)
- one of our longer stops (2 nights) was at this bad ### looking resort in Elounda Bay on the island of Crete. The resort was bad ###, don't get me wrong, but I ####### hated it. We were surrounded by what felt like the New Jersey/NYC people of Europe. There was nothing to do outside of the resort. The food was all themed (i.e. Mexican Night - I #### you not...in ####### GREECE). The kids were running around, being little #####. It was too cold to lay out. Everything was expensive AF...I was ready to GTFO of there asap
We were treated like peasants b/c we were young Americans, dressed in splorin' type gear. The whole thing just sucked. The trip we went on was tight, but should've just stopped at the bay for a picture then spent more time on the south part of the island.
The last night we spent in Chania...and it was off the chain. If you go splore the island of Crete, I recommend making that your entry/exit point or base camp b/c it's awesome.
We also like to do trips where you can do stuff and check stuff out. Like while we were in Crete, we went hiking into the cave where Zeus was born...which was tight. This was like a resort where a bunch of rich ##### bag Europeans went and I wanted to head butt some people.

There are three things that get an automatic veto from me
Apr 8, 2021, 4:23 PM
|

without looking any further...the word 'resort', the word 'cruise', and any trip that involves family beyond Mrs. Tig or Joonyer and his fiancé. I would rather spend the week volunteering at the county landfill than have Auntie Estelle or sister-in-law Bertha Jean dictating my activities for a week.

Avoid resorts at all costs

If it even hints at "all inclusive" anything, its a no for me. Stay as far away from city centers/tourist traps as possible. Red and I try to check boxes, but we also try to wander off of the beaten path on places we go.

Didn’t stay at Sandals like the 2 planes full of people that landed with us.
We thought we made a mistake.
Not even close, all inclusive, plunge pool, views, activities and a handful of people. We lucked out big time and it was the awesome

wife wanted to chill for 2 days b/c we did some serious splorin through ITaly and Greece, and this place looked real tight on the Marriott website, so I snagged it.
The last night in Rome, we did stay at the St. Regis, which was pretty tight.
This one stop was the only thing I'd change on that trip.
We hiked all over the Amalfi Coast, and then had a dope splorin' day on a polaris driving around Santorini. It was so sick. Took some Greek moonshine shots w/ some farmers. Found this abandoned bar on a beach, had some seggs. did it right

be. Back in the day, you could spend a week at a hotel on the frontage road with a view of the Gaffney Peach for a reasonable price. A vibrating bed that took quarters, and a Stuckey's within walking distance for pecan log rolls... damm man, that's living.
