If You Had $50 Million To Give Away

Dec 15, 2022, 9:06 AM

Would you give it (or any significant portion of it) to Clemson to use (however that is done within the rules) for NIL to try to keep the program elite?

For me, not a chance. Just doesn't make sense to me on any level to give 18 - 22 years old kids money to play football for my university. Not when I could use it to make genuine difference in so many ares that really matter.

And this is coming from a 63 year Clemson fanatic. I agree with someone who posted recently that CFB is being destroyed right before our very eyes. Although a fanatic, I am quickly losing interest. At least to the level of "if they win that's great, and if they lose no big deal". It hardly resembles what I grew up with, or even what it was 10 years ago. Which is neither good nor bad, just different. Things change all the time, but that doesn't mean I have to maintain my interest level. Long ago lost interest in the NBA and NFL, and I suppose CFB is just next on the list.

No, I’d invest it for my kids, their kids etc. Muliti generational financial stability is more important to me!

I’d give some to Clemson - Stuart got a softball stadium named after him. Maybe Lacrosse has something that needs to be named?

If I did do NIL it would be for one or more of the lesser glamorous sports.

Not a chance. Certainly, something for generational wealth but other causes which benefit the community at large. If a college athlete is not satisfied with receiving a free gold plated full ride scholarship which many struggle to obtain through work or loans then I have nothing to add.

Re: If You Had $50 Million To Give Away

Dec 15, 2022, 9:42 AM

I can not even wrap my head around the idea of having that amount of money, so I cannot begin to think about what I would do. I know my family would not have to worry about anything monetary. After that, I really have no idea. I am one of those guys that JStone referred to. I worked and got loans and didn’t even have a checking account when I finished college. Had an old car my wife’s dad gave her about a year before we got married and I graduated and went to work. We are comfortable now and we put our 2 kids through college with no debt but I’ve worked my tail off for 39 years to get there. The idea of that kind of wealth is totally foreign to me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nope. What I gave would be directly to Clemson University.

Dec 15, 2022, 9:50 AM

I am of the opinion that if you start recruiting only guys who want their NIL pie before an education, or regardless of team results, you will wind up with Texas A&M 2022. And, wasn't THAT just a fantastic outcome?

:(

Well, Clemson isn't interested in people's generosity with money that they do not have. They are much more interested in the money you DO have ....... whether it is $100 or $1,000,000.

Re: If You Had $50 Million To Give Away

Dec 15, 2022, 9:57 AM

No way. And honestly I can see where the shine of all this is going to wear off for some donors who are throwing all of this cash around right now. How many times is Bob, who owns the local car lot, going to pay some 18 year old kid hundreds of thousands of dollars just to see that kid sit on the bench for two years and then transfer to a team Bob hates? Some people are just going to be tapped out at some point just to give money to kids who don't give a #### about them and who will leave as soon as someone offers a few bucks more.

If anyone "has $50MM to give away"

Dec 15, 2022, 9:58 AM

they "have it" to "give away" because it benefits them in some way.

I can't fathom how much scratch would be needed to be in that type of position, but really wealthy people make contributions of "X" because it protects "X+Y" of their actual worth, not because they are nice people.

Eco tourism for youth interested in science

Dec 15, 2022, 10:13 AM

I just returned from Central America, and the amount of plastic waste that was washed up on the beaches there was truly heartbreaking. The rainforests are being moved down at alarming rates, even the national parks due to bribes and corruption. We need to educate our young people about alternatives to plastic, and the importance of keeping waste out of our waterways. Also show them disappearing natural habitat which is being replaced by pavement and dump trucks. My objective would be to build some appreciation in the youth for the natural wonders of the world and to protect its beauty, not to grind it up to put a little coin in your pocket

That question made me think. If I had $50 million extra at my disposal:

$7.5 million to church
$5 million to charities
$7.5 million to my son and daughter-in-law
$7.5 million to my daughter and son-in-law
$7.5 million to a trust for both grandsons
$2.5 million for mad money/investing
$5 million for ???
$7.5 million to Clemson so my kids and grandchildren will have 6 football tickets and parking for their lives. (In case you're interested, that's $20,000 per year x 6 people for 62.5 years.)

I would call the wife and tell her I hit the lottery and to pack her clothes, and when she asks summer or winter I would say doesn't matter just be gone when I get there!

Nah that wouldn't work! I would buy me a place down in Costa Rico have a room full of Rum and sit on the beach for how ever long I have left watching the grandkids play in the ocean. Then leave the rest to my wife, kids, and grands. Maybe leave some to Clemson but dang they have gotten alot from my family already.

Dec 15, 2022, 10:49 AM

So my only choices are give to Clemson (generally) or to NIL?
I would probably take a flyer on that one. I need more control than that. Universities can be quite wrongheaded and wasteful with their money, while NIL is a COMPLETE waste of money. I would like to endow a couple of chairs to teach the Constitution to students, for a start, but that is not one of your choices.

Dec 15, 2022, 12:13 PM

There are some rules, I just don't what they are. I don't think the AD can just hand out the money. So my question assumes Clemson would follow whatever rules there are. It also assumes you have $50 million and can do whatever you want with it. Would you give it, or a significant portion of it, to Clemson for NIL to try to keep Clemson in the running to get the elite players we have gotten the past 15 years or so, is what I am curious about.

I would not.

Re: If You Had $50 Million To Give Away

Dec 15, 2022, 12:08 PM

I honestly don't know what I'd do with it all. I just know I'm going on a long vacation of traveling the world and doing things on my bucket list. Then I'm buying me a nice house with tons of land somewhere. I'll also make sure to give myself a nice office studio to kickstart my own business. Then I'm investing the rest so my family will never have to worry about money ever again. Also have charities I'd rather give it to than football NIL. So, sadly not sure if Clemson sees that money from me outside regular IPTAY payments. I have my own life and goals to worry about.

This has always been EXACTLY my thought when it came to one donor in particular that contributed heavily to the cause of our football probation in the early 80's, and possibly the equally horrific bball probation of the 70's.

There was a time I had reason to be on the field during games in the late 70's. After games I would watch grown men give $100 handshakes to the players as they walked off the field. It just seemed so ridiculous to me.
