Two things to remember about the transfer portal

Oct 5, 2021, 1:34 PM

1) It is not like free agency in the NFL or trades. College players cannot transfer mid-season and play for another team, and neither can players in the portal.
2) The portal is not a time machine. With preseason expectations for DJ, and TP firmly as the backup, and with relative health on both sides of the ball, what key transfers did we miss on that were ready to come, and would be in a position to help us now? Having a mantra like "we too deep" does not really bode well for effective use of the transfer portal.

On a completely unrelated note, I just noticed that the transfer portal and our backup quarterback have the same initials. Strange coincidence.

With the TP injury in April and the Portal Open

Oct 5, 2021, 1:39 PM

With the TP in jury in April and the Portal open in 2021 until July 1, we could have picked up a QB in the portal for this season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Point well made

Oct 5, 2021, 1:42 PM

But with DJ being mentioned as a potential Heisman candidate and with his performance (although limited) on the field last year, were there really any great QBs who would have been inclined to come here?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Much too logical for the TNets....

Oct 5, 2021, 1:55 PM

.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Of course not. Any QB we could've gotten out of the portal

Oct 5, 2021, 2:07 PM [ in reply to Point well made ]

would have been Nick Schuessler quality. It would've been a guy that was OK with being 2nd or 3rd string at Clemson. The notion that we could've gotten a starter-level QB out of the portal for this year is absurd.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

many are completely missing the point..........

Oct 5, 2021, 2:43 PM

it's not a "get a new starting QB" argument.

It's improve in our deficiency areas.........it's Dabo changing his mindset on "portal guys". In his mind they are troubled/character flawed players that don't "FIT" at clemson...........and maybe that's true for some. HYPOTHETICAL: We could have a "Nick Shuessler" caliber starter at QB, but in Dabo's mind he recruited "Nick Shuesler caliber" QB to Clemson, therefore he's our GUY. He wouldn't give a glance at a "joe burrow" or "kyler murray" b/c he has a preconceived notion about their character and/or fit and would ride or die w/ said "Nick Shuessler QB".

Similar can be said for any other position(s) that we could use.

Bottomline is there ARE QUALITY players in the portal that could and would come in and start at positions that we'd benefit from having, but Dabo won't do it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Where has Dabo said he “won’t” ever use the portal?

Oct 5, 2021, 3:33 PM

He doesn’t like it.

He would rather not use it.

I’ve never seen him quoted as saying he will never use it.

So,far he’s had no compelling reason.

In the future he may see the need and act on available talent.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yep, he's been saying that for several years now........

Oct 5, 2021, 3:37 PM

yet we're 1 of 3 teams (2 military academies) among the 130 FBS teams that doesn't take transfers...........still.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What he did in the past is not necessarily an indication

Oct 5, 2021, 10:06 PM

of what he may do in the future.

He has not said he “won’t” ... merely that he’d rather not.

He doesn’t like the current situation, but he will be forced to live with it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If this offseason wasn't compelling enough

Oct 5, 2021, 4:38 PM [ in reply to Where has Dabo said he “won’t” ever use the portal? ]

then I don't know what is.

The most important position on the field (QB) just lost an incredible three year starter to the draft. We were left with the new starter who only started two games last year (D.J.), the new second stringer who just had a significant knee injury (Taisun), and that's it. We had a walk-on to fill in the third string spot.

We had two freshmen slated to come in, one of whom was unlikely to ever end up on campus due to his pro baseball aspirations, and the other who can play some QB but who we liked more at receiver.

This is inexcusable for a power 5 program, especially one that has a track record recently of having stellar QB play.

The question for Dabo is, why not explore the portal? No one said that Dabo should've felt forced to get a QB. No one wants us to get a guy who has an attitude problem or who lacks the skills to help us. But just entertain the idea. Look around. Don't discount it as an option when it could help the team.

The ironic (and frustrating) part is that we have lost to a team with a transfer QB each of the last two years in the playoffs in Burrow and Fields. Yet we weren't willing to even consider it?

Re: If this offseason wasn't compelling enough

Do we know that the coaching staff didn't talk to anyone? Before the season, DJ was expected to be a Heisman candidate and he is only a sophomore. Nobody would have had more eligibility than DJ and so would be expecting to come in as a career back up.

People can make an argument about some positions, but QB was not one of them. With any position we are assuming that the staff didn't talk to any players to see if there might be some interest. Just because we didn't take anybody does not make that so. A lot of players know where they are going when they enter the portal. Yes there are players from the portal that we could use. Yes there are players in the portal that fit the Clemson mold socially and intellectually. Yes there are players that would like to come to Clemson. I am not convinced that there are as many players that check all 3 boxes as many people seem to think.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think anyone is expecting a Justin Fields type

Oct 5, 2021, 4:32 PM [ in reply to Of course not. Any QB we could've gotten out of the portal ]

QB from the transfer portal this year.

However, given DJ's struggles, and Taisun's recovery from ACL, wouldn't it have been nice to have a QB who is scholarship-worthy to at least help with practice and game prep? Not to mention a fresh perspective on how things were done at another program.

How many TNetters would like to have had a Nick Schuessler type QB available these past 5 weeks, and now?

Asking for a friend.

I think you did this on purpose but was lost on all the responders who want to rail on Dabo for not taking transfers.

Nick Scheusler was a transfer from I believe Miss State. We did not get him directly from Grayson HS.

Yes, we could've. But we were told that we don't do that.

having the intial mindset of........

Oct 5, 2021, 1:41 PM

"well there's nobody that would start here anyway" or "there are no players better than the ones we have" is part of the problem.

just one example......LSU wouldn't have their 2019 national title had they took that stance on the portal.

I'm not saying find a replacement for DJ, but I'm sure if our staff put forth some research and effort toward the portal they would FIND some players that would start DAY ONE. To act like we have the best players at every position is insanely naive.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who would have been LSUs QB otherwise?

Oct 5, 2021, 1:59 PM

Were they any good? Did they play last year? Were they considered a Heisman frontrunner?

Can't pretend I pay much attention to LSU.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

None of us are in a position to pick portal candidates

Oct 5, 2021, 2:00 PM [ in reply to having the intial mindset of........ ]

While none of us are qualified to pick portal candidates. The real point is, Dabo and coaching staff must be more open minded about it than they appear to be. We had two top 10 defensive portal transfers go out......surely there were some qualified in the 2500 in the portal to come to Clemson. I agree with Dabo that we want to grow our own, but we need to selectively fill gaps, esp. offensive line. I agree with others, I would like to see us take some 3 star guys in the portal that have experience. Its obvious to virtually everyone outside our coaching staff the O-Line needs improvement and experience.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So Danny is supposed to be looking at the portal.....right?

Oct 5, 2021, 2:03 PM

Seems they have acknowledged it is part of the game...just not finding a need to go there yet.

Dabo has not said never....just not now.

Oct 5, 2021, 2:04 PM [ in reply to having the intial mindset of........ ]

They aren't saying we have the best players at every position.

They are saying the players we have recruited are better than another program's castaways.

Who exactly did LSU get in the portal as a backup that helped them win the title in 2019?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: having the intial mindset of........

Oct 5, 2021, 3:11 PM

Alabama has 2 starters from transfer portal. Georgia has 3 starters from portal, Oklahoma has 4. Penn State has 6 starters from portal.
Is Clemson the only one doing it right.

Re: having the intial mindset of........

Oct 6, 2021, 12:03 PM

Exclude Alabama and we have more playoff wins and National titles than the other 3 combined in the playoff era. You tell me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: having the intial mindset of........

Oct 6, 2021, 8:17 PM

I will add that over the playoff era. All 3 have probably ranked higher in recruiting rankings than we have. Therefore, in theory they needed a person out of the portal less than we did. Just maybe that means that not giving up on the development of a kid and scrapping them for someone new might work.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The LSU situation is apples and oranges

Oct 5, 2021, 2:11 PM [ in reply to having the intial mindset of........ ]

Burrow transferred out of a crowded QB room at Ohio State so that he could get on the field and start somewhere. He wouldn't have transferred to Clemson to sit behind DJ. Obviously LSU didn't know they were getting a Heisman caliber QB when they picked up Burrow, but they were absolutely looking for somebody that could come in and start and that was 100% their sales pitch to him. That's completely different from Dabo calling somebody up and asking them if they want to come compete for Clemson's backup QB position.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's why you don't recruit them to be a backup.

Oct 5, 2021, 4:43 PM

You recruit them to be part of one of the top programs in college football, with a recent history of incredible success, and one of the most respected coaching staffs in the game, to have an opportunity to compete at a high level and earn a starting spot.

Dabo is persuasive. He can absolutely sell them on the opportunity, just as he does high school players.

Do you think Dabo tells some high school players that they should come to Clemson to be a backup? Of course not. He tells them that he likes what he sees and believes they can help the team. He also tells them that they will have a chance to compete for playing time.

This isn't complicated.

If we had a backup QB who the coaches felt was able to help us win, I think we would've seen them get some playing time this year.

Oct 6, 2021, 11:32 AM

are dumb? The more coveted guys in the portal are picking programs where they know they are being recruited to start, not where they are being offered a chance to compete.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: That's why you don't recruit them to be a backup.

Oct 6, 2021, 12:16 PM [ in reply to That's why you don't recruit them to be a backup. ]

How many QB's do you think are looking to go to KC and compete with Mahomes, so that they can compete for the starting spot and lead a high powered offense to the Super Bowl?

Re: Two things to remember about the transfer portal

Oct 5, 2021, 2:36 PM

Great post but the rank, and I do mean rank, and file on TigerNet will not understand it. What few want to admit is DJU is a rookie who is learning and TP was supposed to be better than anyone in the beloved Portal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You sir, do not understand the transfer portal effect

Oct 5, 2021, 3:15 PM

First, it is not filled with castaways only. Some guys with talent are stuck behind guys (sometimes younger) on their team and just want to play.
Second, they still may not start at their next school but the fresh start is there and they add depth...plus they can’t transfer again.

Do you need to be selective to maintain team chemistry? Heck yeah, but you can do that with dedicated staff checking them out.

Times have changed and we are paying the price with injuries and inexperienced good but young players.

We have become unaccustomed to being relegated to ‘also-ran’ status in the A-C-C. I could barely type that. I love our staff, but ‘DO BETTER!’

want to transfer here - perhaps a really good OT sees that a Jackson Carmen leaves Clemson early and says, " Man, I know Clemson will take transfers and could use a guy like me because, I've got good grades, good character, have proven I'm a hard worker, etc. so I'm going to put my name in the portal and connect with them" Right now, there is no one thinking they could even transfer to Clemson.

As for QB, with the TP injury, we should have picked up one -someone would have come thinking about a possible ring and mop-up duty, and next man up if DJ gets injured.

FYI there are also 2 transfer(out)players playing from the ACC who are considered top 12 Heisman candidates.

UGA, Bama, PSU etc. are going to become destinations for transfers because they are proving they can make it work. We will become a program with no depth and a training ground for those who will take transfers. Winning NCs with a bunch of FR on your 2 deep every year isn't going to happen. You'll lose too many early games to be in the hunt for the playoffs, even if those FR become great throughout the season.

We already don't maximize the use of our scholarships with the # of walkons, now we exasperate that with filling early upperclassmen departures with HS players. Keep in mind, we are already hit with more early departures to NFL than most teams already due to talent level, so add the outgoing transfers to that early departure #.
