Some news to pass along this morning

Nov 16, 2021, 8:48 AM

One of our legends, the great Ben Skardon, passed away peacefully yesterday. He went into hospice care Saturday and was surrounded by his family. We use the word "hero" too much and it loses its meaning... But he was a bona-fide hero in every sense of the word. A giant.

He will be sorely missed, but what a life that man had!

Very sad to hear. He was my freshman English professor. I knew he served but never knew till man years later what he endured in WWII. A hero and a great man.

A warrior and true Clemson gentleman

If the University is going to rename Tillman Hall I could think of no better name than Skardon Hall...

Just surviving the Bataan Death March, or making it to 100

years old would be an accomplishment. The SAME man doing both tells you all you needed to know about the toughness of Colonel (Now Honorary Brigadier General) Beverly (Ben) Skardon.

I am sure Joe21 was there to greet him at the Pearly Gates, and there will be some great stories swapped from now to eternity.

I would encourage anyone, Clemson fan or not, to read Colonel Skardon's "The Clemson Ring" story. It is both a great testament to the horrors of war, and the friendships that get forged in iron as a result.

What a wonderful tribute.

Had him for American Literature in 1977.

A great American, professor, and hero!

What an incredible life he lived

He was an American hero and a true Clemson gentleman. He was the best prof I had during my time at Clemson and he had a dramatic effect on my professional life. May light perpetual shine upon him.

When I was a student...

I took a "Clemson" history class with Dr. Jerry Reel. A portion of that class focused on the Clemson ring. It was during that class that I first met and learned about Ben Skardon.

The actual ring ceremony was re-introduced sometime around 2000 which was long after I graduated, but I had the pleasure of sitting through it twice when both of my daughters received their Clemson class rings.

I always though it was very fitting that a portion of the ring ceremony included Colonel Skardon and his incredible story.

Col. Skardon, you will be sorely missed.

It's been a sad few days for the Clemson faithful.

Truly a great man Rest In Peace

Was he actually at the game on Saturday? They showed him on the video board while they announced his promotion, one of the best moments on a great military appreciation day, but I couldn’t find him on the field. My dad, who is a vet, likes to look for the heroes out on the field while they are being honored; but we couldn’t see him.
