How does Dabo Swinney feel about players skipping bowl games? He hates it

Some of the nation’s best college football players have decided to leave their teams a game early, skipping their bowl games in order to prepare for the NFL Draft. Quarterback Will Grier of West Virginia, Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver, NC State receiver Kelvin Harmon, defensive tackle Rashan Gary of Michigan, and South Carolina receiver Deebo Samuel are part of a large group of players who ha Full Story »

Could Dabo have said it any better? I don’t think there really is a better response than what he gave.

Either “All in” or its “next man up”.

Typical reporter: lack of context in the headline.

I think the headline is spot on. Dabo does hate it. But in typical Dabo fashion he understands it is not within his control so he deals with it with a positive attitude and doesn’t judge anyone. Dabo is not only a role model for his players but also for all of us fans who have the good fortune to watch him in action.

I'm totally on board with Dabo. Today's game is starting to suck with all of the me first kinds of players. I hate what the NFL and other pro sports are doing to the college game.
You can't blame the kids sometimes for jumping at the money, but they are selfish and letting their teammates down.

Once again, Dabo faced with a difficult issue

Dec 15, 2018, 12:48 PM

...I'm gonna get hurt 1000 times over on the football field versus driving to watch the game. Maybe that's why I prefer to drive and watch rather than play. But then again, at my age I wouldn't make the cut to be water boy to maybe I would be safe on the field...LOL!

only bowls that matter this year

Dec 15, 2018, 1:05 PM

are the cotton and orange ..i cant fault a player for not wanting to risk snapping his leg in a meaningless game..take deebo samuel..why go risk everything just for some third rate bowl game..the answer to solve this is to expand the playoff then trim some of the other bowls down

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He did make the case

Dec 15, 2018, 2:07 PM

For CFP expansion, though, it wasn't his intention. The success of an effort isn't simply the achievement of an objective, if one's blind to the collateral damage. There's a CFP, and bowls suffer.

Another analogy? ACA...aka: Obamacare. It has its' good points, no doubt, especially around pre-existing conditions, which absolutely hamstrung people to their employer, knowing they'd not be covered, or couldn't afford insurance under a new provider. So, many people now have coverage...and for them, it's affordable, to boot. The collateral? Premiums that are 4-5 times what they were just a few years ago, despite no change in one's health! How's that fair?

There are others. Nothing exists in a vacuum.

Then why would he have played in the second half of his season bc there was Tennessee, Ole Miss, Florida, and the Clemson game that could have really put him at risk of being injured!!! He didn't need those games for the NFL to know what they were getting in Deebo Samuel's!!!

Not mentioned is that NFL may hold it against a player to skip games.

Skipping games implies a lack of passion for sport and selfishness.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It does not and the NFL apparently doesn't care***

Dec 17, 2018, 11:24 AM [ in reply to Re: only bowls that matter this year ]

You're way off base here. NFL teams would rather you treat it like a business. All that "passion for the game" stuff is something fans want to hear. The NFL would rather you be in their program with their trainers and strength/conditioning programs. They couldn't care less about an additional game when they have years of game film and other information on the player already. Missing one game doesn't change 3 or more years of "passion" for the game anyway. That's ridiculous.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This isn't 3ven debatable. Past drafts indicate the NFL will

Dec 17, 2018, 11:44 AM

Do what the NFL wants regardless of collegiate perfomance.

McCaffrey was #8 pick.

I dunno why this argument keeps coming up.

I still say that they are getting paid by getting free educations, and should play the whole year through. I believe when they sign their commitment letter it’s the same as a contract. Many will say the coaches do it for money blah, blah, so why not the kids. Well they’re getting a free education, and just like real life they need to honor that contract for said contract price. Otherwise make em all pay to go to school.

Let's say you had an academic scholie and majored

Dec 17, 2018, 10:34 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: How does Dabo Swinney feel about players skipping bowl games? He hates it ]

In chemistry. Every chemistry major has to work with a professor on 1 of their projects before they can graduate.

So midway through your senior year you come up with a brilliant way to scrub greenhouse gases out of a muffler. Exxon gets word, offers you 3 million to immediately fly to their research headquarters and start working on your designs.

I am sure you would tell them to keep their 3 mil and pound sand.

Dec 17, 2018, 12:09 PM

Hate to break it to you but if you use University equipment or a lab then the IP for your brilliant idea is likely owned by the University. Exxon may pay you to work for them they will also have to pay the University for the rights to your scrubber. The university gives you every opportunity to be successful and builds you as a candidate for the commercial world. Athletics is no different and should hold the same expectations that come along with any scholarship.

Dec 17, 2018, 12:21 PM

You could leave and no1 would Fault you for it.

No1 would cry for your professor or fellow chemistry students.

Re: Bingo...

Dec 17, 2018, 12:41 PM

No one would fault you for it, but the University would have every right to profit from your ability as would the professor. Your rights become even less when you become a University employee which some of the "pay for play" advocates seem to ignore.

When you sign a scholarship agreement you agree that the University has the rights to your work in exchange for access to the resources of the University. Like with many academic scholarships, if a student fails to maintain a GPA or does not finish the year they are subject to pay back funds.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly.. nothing on that scholarship says

Dec 17, 2018, 12:51 PM

The student athlete has to participate.

It just says, as long as you recieve this money , you have to follow these rules... none of which keep you from leaving anytime you want.... just like any other student on scholarship.

No1 faults the chemistry kid from leaving, why fault the athlete?

Getting "paid free educations" is laughable. The player has already paid back the "free education" in exposure for the school. If the player is good enough to sit out a meaningless bowl game, then he was a high profile player that already elevated the school. One thing I agree on with a certain talking head is that if these "free educations" are so valuable then instead of paying the coaches all these ridiculously high bonuses, pay them in all the free education they want for themselves and their immediate families. That sounds about fair right? I love Dabo, on this one, he should have left it at "the player has a right to do what's they feel is best for themselves. All I ask is that they communicate their decision appropriately with me so that I can get other players prepared for their spot." Dabo doesn't know if that player prayed for hours about the decision and he felt led to skip the bowl game.

Or..make a rule that a coach or admin Cannot make more than

Dec 17, 2018, 11:48 AM

The highest paid academic professor/admin.

I think if this happened you would see that the monetary value of a scholarship would way higher than a coaches/ admins salary.

The whole "pay the player" debate would be snubbed.

?? TU for Dabo, if ever one of our guys decides he don't want to play in the post season game. Just let Dabo know, and he will get the next man up ready to play!!! That's fair enough but, I'm not sure how their team mates that has pushed and helped get them better will feel about them after the fact!!!

Their teammates are probably ok with it.

Dec 17, 2018, 11:02 AM

But I agree, should be asking the players.

Coaches get paid to be at the games. They will make their millions regardless. They certainly are bias in these matters.
