Guys if you HONEST then you have to know 12 teams is wrong

Jun 24, 2021, 12:36 PM

In past years, how many teams were #5 through #12 and better than the National Champion. Each year the discussion is who #4 will be, and it’s usually between two or three teams. No one else is good enough to be the National Champion.

You will probably have the best team in the top 4, definitely in the top 6. No need to go past that.

You never know who is good enough. They need to play to find out. Some schedules make jt impossible to really tell. I think its good more teams are getting involved because it means more of the nation is getting involved. The best team shouldn't be scared of it and should win anyway if they are the best. Guarantee there will be an upset of 1 of the top 4 teams quite often.

Re: Guys if you HONEST then you have to know 12 teams is wrong

Jun 26, 2021, 1:36 PM

I agree with a 12 team, or even a 16 team playoff...and here is why! Ever since the playoff format started, there has been a growing trend of bowl teams star players opting out of playing in their bowl game. That is eroding the bowl game and the importance it once carried. Often the teams in general play as if these games do not matter. You have top ten teams being soundly defeated by much lower ranked teams. Even teams that barely missed the playoffs get thumped by teams that were not even on the radar. It is time to eliminate these now meaningless bowl games and replace them with playoff games. The playoff teams will still have motivation to play, and their star players will not ride the bench to preserve their draft stock. With the current bowl system, a projected first round pick sees no reason to risk injury for bowl games that have become glorified exhibition games. Many of these bowl games have become almost un-watchable.

There will probably be some top players who will still opt-out, especially if they are projected to go high in the 1st round and are playing on a team not seeded in the top four.

That’s brilliant logic. Let’s do something really stupid because a handful of selfish narcissistic kids might not play in a bowl game! Yeah, brilliant! lol

Itchy premise is, IMHO, wrong. The bowl games, other than the top 5-6 (CFP & NYD) are already degraded by the sheer number of them. It’s like inflation & the dollar: the more there are the less they’re worth. Which is why players opt out of “meaningless bowls”. If there weren’t so many of them they wouldn’t be meaningless. 6 is the correct number for CFP teams. Top 2 teams get a bye, bottom 4 play to advance to second round. Then it’s back to a 4 team format and only one additional game. There just aren’t more than 6 teams capable of winning it all season to season

The original intent of the playoffs was to get the 2 best teams on the field. I think 4 has worked fine but I guess people want to see 6 SEC teams and a pac12 and g5, etc.

I can’t wait to see the puppets on ESPN pretending teams 4-12 are national title contenders… whatever it takes for ratings

Exactly! Disney is all about $$$ and has had its ESPN commentators pushing for additional teams/games for a few years.

12/2/18:

Kirk Herbstreit: “The committee has said that two losses is too much to overcome. Not being a conference champion is too much to overcome. This is a historical moment as far as evaluating the committee because the eyeball test, to me, clearly Georgia is a top 4 team.”

Jesse Palmer: “Georgia looked like one of the four best teams… a more complete team than Oklahoma.”

This isn't really about ensuring the best team makes the

Jun 24, 2021, 1:31 PM

playoff. It's primarily about 3 things.

1) $$$$$$$
2) Appeasing the G5 (rightfully so)
3) $$$$$$$

I don't see any logic behind moving to 12 instead of 8 except for the potential revenue from four more games. With 8 teams you can already include the five P5 champs + the best G5 team + two at large. What's the need for all of these extra at-large teams?

Not sure i really like a 6 team format either. I think there pretty commonly will not be a large gap between #2 and #3 so rewarding the #2 team with a bye while #3 plays is a bit dubious. Also, with 6 you probably move to the five P5 champs + one G5 team and no at-large bids which i also don't care for. Every year there's at least one P5 champ that doesn't belong anywhere near the playoff. It's one thing to include that team when there are also at-large spots, but it's another matter entirely when you do not have those at-large spots. The Pac 12 has produced a lot of turd champions over the last decade, and in the decade prior to that it was the ACC.

Re: Guys if you HONEST then you have to know 12 teams is wrong

Jun 24, 2021, 1:47 PM

RS - You are 100% correct on the best team is in the top 4-6 teams. Clemson and Ohio St. are the only 4 seeds to ever deserve the slot in the current format (that includes Bama in 2018). However, as already stated, this is all about how to get fans back in the seats for bowl games and TV revenue. Clemson will come out on top of the financial side for at least the foreseeable future though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's just about money.

Jun 24, 2021, 1:59 PM

I believe the playoff should be expanded but to only 6 teams. Maybe 8 but I agree. 12 is to much. It's all about $$$ though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the worst part will be automatic bids..................

Jun 24, 2021, 2:01 PM

Nobody should ever automatically get in a playoff because they won a conference. Remember some of those ACC champions from the BCS era? But they will let conference champs in because they are letting conference commissioners get involved in the process. Conference Commissioners are worse than a politician. They only want whats best for their area and not whats best for the sport.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: the worst part will be automatic bids..................

Jun 24, 2021, 2:08 PM

Having representation from all of the power 5 conferences IS good for the sport. College football has turned into a regional sport, save Ohio St.

I do think limits should be placed on the at large bids. Personally I don’t believe you should have more than 3 from any conference regardless of their supposed strength of schedule.

Jun 27, 2021, 10:14 PM

right on the money with both your points! All P5s should be represented, and there DEFINITELY should be a limit on the number from any one conference. It would suit me if the limit were two, but definitely not more than three!

Anyone who doesn't think being a conference champ is important, is an idiot! That is the only thing that is decided on the field! The rankings are totally subjective, with too many biases affecting the rankings!

Jun 24, 2021, 2:19 PM

its about keeping the rest of the country interested in college football. So add more teams, let them get destroyed and keep it moving.

At the end of the day its about fun and money. This does both.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think it will do much

Jun 24, 2021, 3:18 PM

to keep the rest of the country interested.

If the same teams end up in the final four as well as in the championship game, we will still keep hearing that the average college football fan is tired of seeing the same teams.

Having more teams in the early rounds of an expanded playoff won't help much.

But you start giving teams opportunities to appear in the playoffs. Recruiting improves at those schools and maybe 5 years down the road the top 2 or 3 teams aren’t blowing everyone out.

Not much worse than complaining about something that hasn’t happened

It will keep more teams in the mix late into the season which is good for the sport. It could be 3 games left and there might be 20 or more teams who have a shot at getting in.

It will be huge to keep the country interested. Thats a given. It will also keep them paying attention during the season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Only 2-3 teams are worth it each year

Jun 24, 2021, 8:29 PM

All the complaining for spot #4 will just be amplified for anybody in spots 13-16 that feel they should be 12. So much harder to differentiate between those teams.

Yet they’ll still find a way to keep non power 5 teams out.

Re: Guys if you HONEST then you have to know 12 teams is wrong

Jun 27, 2021, 9:06 AM

The only scenario I can think of is our 2014 team... and even that has a caveat.
We start 1-2.. we were very young, but as that season went on that team became very good.
HAD DW4 not tore his ACL.. we beat GT and finish the year 10-2... if the 12 team playoff had been in place, I could have seen us making a deep run.
But that kind of story is rare.

That said, converting several of the major bowls to playoff games is OK with me.
