As I said the other day how does ESPN rate him the #1 qb but #15 overall. strange though if you'll employ Jesse palmer I guess you'll do anything

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why is that strange? Just because he's the best QB doesn't

Sep 25, 2013, 11:11 AM

mean he's the best overall prospect or athlete.

Re: Why is that strange? Just because QB is usually the most

Sep 25, 2013, 11:40 AM

valuable position on the team. collegge or pro you can substitute a good backup much easier at any position than qb. you notice the fall off there the most

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Atleast for ESPN 150, its about the grade

Sep 25, 2013, 11:49 AM

players are graded at their position and ranked by grade... for example:

Leonard Fournette graded at 9% and D Watson graded at 88. So ranking by grade, Fournette is the better prospect (in other words Fournette is a better RB than Watson is a QB).

Because 1-14 aren't QBs?***

Does it shock you when a QB isn't the #1 NFL draft pick?***

Very rarely do you see the #1 overall player a QB. They rank other positions at that spot, like DE or a skill position (RB,WR) because they are more than likely to make an immediate impact as a fresh. A QB is the most valuable position on the field, but usually takes the most time to fully develop into that leader and elite player.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would like to see him redshirt just like Winston and Boyd

Sep 25, 2013, 11:18 AM

Stoudt deserves the starting job next year with Chad backing him up, and then Chad the next year with Watson backing him up and then finally Watson, assuming Chad is drafted? I think all of them will be drafted.
Remember Watson went to Elite 11 and slid way down to 11 at one time then managed to get back up to 9 to end the time there. I think they will all be great QB's here and remember Stoudt's showing against SCState! 19 0f 20 and appears calmer than Boyd, though Tajh is much better runner. TAJH FOR HEISMAN (CLEMSON IS QB U.)

this will most likely happen but with injuries, transgfers, etc you just neve know till the time comes

Unfortunately, with Stoudt looking good for next year and

watson coming in, it looks like there is a good chance Chad will not see the field as a starter here at Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Disagree - Chad looked better than Stoudt in spring game

Sep 25, 2013, 12:05 PM

However, I like Stoudt's continual improvement, coolness and more than anything, his seniority. And as another poster said, you never know with injuries? Everybody healthy and Clemson is blessed with excellent quarterbacking for next few years and becoming QB U. for a looong time! GO TIGERS!

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think there's a chance Stoudt could be the next Cassel

Sep 25, 2013, 12:30 PM [ in reply to Unfortunately, with Stoudt looking good for next year and ]

Ride the pine at Clemson for 4 years and end up on NFL rosters anyway.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No one deserves the starting job to just be handed to them

Sep 25, 2013, 12:08 PM [ in reply to I would like to see him redshirt just like Winston and Boyd ]

next year. Whoever gives us the best chance to win deserves to play next year. Most people at this time last year assumed Clint Trickett would be starting at FSU this season. I doubt anyone in Tallahassee still wishes that came true.

I think Kelly has just as good of a shot as Stoudt to win the job next year. Kelly definitely wasn't 100% against SC State, but he will be by next spring. I think Kelly has the better arm, running ability, and has a better leadership quality than Stoudt. Stoudt definitely has the experience edge though. It will be an interesting battle.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No one deserves the starting job - excellent reasoning!

Sep 25, 2013, 12:16 PM

And I am pulling for Stoudt, because of his senior year, he is excellent passer, very calm under pressure, and I have heard he is "better runner than you might think..." Dabo! Chad will be great backup and change of pace QB - used more than Stoudt is this year. And with no injuries to those two, Watson can sit out year just like his heros Tajh and Winston!

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would rather see the best QB play. Silly me.***

Sep 25, 2013, 4:03 PM [ in reply to I would like to see him redshirt just like Winston and Boyd ]

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There is nothing new or surprising in any of Dabo's

Sep 25, 2013, 1:11 PM

comments regarding Watson's chances of playing as a freshman; it's the same with every talented QB who comes into the program. The best QB, the one who gives us the best chance to win will be the QB. It could be Stoudt, it could be Kelly, or it could be Watson. It could be a senior, junior, sophomore, or a freshman. The competition is always open.

Based on common sense and what we know and what we have seen, instead of what we imagine based on recruiting hype and what we know for a fact can be meaningless spring game performances, Cole Stoudt will almost certainly be the starter next fall, or at least the heavy favorite going into fall camp. Kelly will have a tremendous advantage over Watson the following year, so it stands to reason that he will be the favorite to start at least that year. If Kelly does a good job, Watson will probably have to wait until he is a junior, when Kelly is gone, to be the starter.

Again, however, the competition is always open, and if the starter is not performing then the next guy will get a shot; none of these guys have been or will be guaranteed playing time, much less a starting job. Right now we have no idea how Kelly or Watson will perform when the game is on the line, or when they are the starter. High school film and accolades mean very little and don't always translate to success at this level.

Watson starts next year hands down

Sep 25, 2013, 1:12 PM

He is the #1 QB prospect for a reason, plus he's enrolling in January. He is a great passer with the ability to scramble. He's already much more decisive than Tahj in the pocket and goes through his progressions better. I can see us using both Watson and Kelly next year. Go Tigers!!!

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's possible, but not likely.

Sep 25, 2013, 1:29 PM

You seem to be basing that at least in part on recruiting hype ("he's the #1 QB prospect for a reason"), yet we know for a FACT that that kind of hype very often does not translate to the next level. Stoudt and Kelly have been in the system for some time, and both are very good QBs in their own right. Kelly was an elite 11 QB himself and fared much better in that competition than Watson.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion, and that's fine. I hope that Watson is the next Joe Montana/Johnny Unitas/name your favorite all rolled into one just like everybody else, but it's funny how people get so carried away with the hype and start counting on things with this degree of certainty.

Re: It's possible, but not likely.

Sep 25, 2013, 3:04 PM

All over it Smiling Tiger. I hope Watson is as good as advertised, but then again, so were Stoudt and Kelly. I will say this, Dabo and Chad will put the best one on the field, and if that's Watson, then that's who it will be. Many coaches have lost their jobs because they stuck with a guy with seniority who wasn't the best player. TB was very bad about being too loyal to players and to coaches, and that probably cost him his job. I, now am glad it did. I think we are much better off.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Unless Kelly or Stoudt absolutely can't do the job

Sep 25, 2013, 4:12 PM [ in reply to Watson starts next year hands down ]

there is no good reason to start Watson. Even the ESPN article acknowledges that the vast majority of #1 QB picks lay out the first year and start heavy play the second.

Benching otherwise good QBs to play Watson his first year makes very little sense especially if it means he leaves after 4 and not 5 years with an RS delay. Of course Swinney is going to give him his shot. But the other two would have to really stink or break both their arms for Dabo to choose Watson in my opinion.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Highly doubt it

Sep 25, 2013, 7:54 PM [ in reply to Watson starts next year hands down ]

Hasn't put on the weight or the time needed to surpass Stoudt. He'll be an exceptional QB after a RS year.

Sep 25, 2013, 4:06 PM

Why isn't he a 5* on ESPN? If he's the #1 QB and the #15 overall player in the nation, how on earth do they justify keeping him as a 4*?

I believe Watson will redshirt next year unless he just comes out and absolutely dominates the competition...probably will be the best thing for him to redshirt and get some exp under his belt. I believe Kelley will be the starter next yr. I like Stoudt but I think we need that duel threat qb to make this offense really click and Kelley would be the guy to do that.

Re: Football Recruiting Update: ESPN: Is Watson next freshman QB star?

Sep 28, 2013, 9:56 PM

I'll bet a dollar to a donut that Stoudt is our qb next year.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree. Remember we start the season again with a bang

Sep 28, 2013, 10:04 PM

but this time we have to go down between the hedges. So far Stoudt has proven he has improved and especially has started to use his feet more. He may not be the best dual threat ever, but it's hard to say. So far this year Stoudt has it all over Kelly. But the good news is we have a pretty deep pool. It may all boil down to who wants it most and who works the hardest.
