Report: ACC to add bowl in Fenway Park

Boston's Fenway Park is set to host some gridiron action come December 2020. Stadium's Brett McMurphy reported Tuesday that the ACC will create a new bowl game Read Update »

The math doesn't work

Apr 30, 2019, 11:23 AM

There are 130 FBS teams. You'll need 86 of them to win 6+ games. I'd like to see someone explain a scenario where 86 teams can win 6+ games next year, given that they only play 12 games. I guess if everyone finished the regular season 6-6, it's possible. But I just looked at the records for all 130 teams at the end of the season (i.e. after the bowl games) and I only counted 81 teams with 6+ wins.

That said, I'll never complain about more football. I stopped off in Shreveport en route to Dallas to watch the Temple - Duke game. It was awesome. More football is good. I just don't see how it's possible unless they're taking teams with losing records.

If there is anything worse than playing a game in Boston in November, it's playing a game in Boston in December.

Apr 30, 2019, 3:54 PM [ in reply to The math doesn't work ]

2 things:

1) 1 of your wins can be FCS, so technically you only need to go 5-6 against the FBS. Or you can go 5-5 with 2 games against FCS (only 1 win counts towards bowl eligibility)

2) They've recently taken 5-7 teams with special approvals by the bowls. This will be more common as more bowls are added

Boston has always been a hot recruiting bed for football, or not! I assume this will become the annual Boston College Bowl like Hawaii / Aloha Bowl... with the occasional Syracuse or Pitt inclusion.

Clemson will never go there unless the wheels fall off but I would love to go to a bowl game in Yankee stadium or Fenway.

The Fenway matchup with the AAC is not appealing but that could change after a few years.

If this is true re 12 ACC teams in bowl games, some of those team will be going with losing records. Rather than adding more bowls, they need to eliminate a few. They have trouble now finding teams who qualify for the existing bowls and attendance figures at some bowls are embarrassing.

Apr 30, 2019, 11:32 AM

I know you were being sarcastic. But, what we really need is to allow scrimmages during the summer. I'd love to watch some college football in July! You could have Clemson vs. Alabama in a scrimmage in July, sell out a stadium and put it on ESPN primetime!

That scrimmage in July would get better ratings than 50% of the current bowls in December.

Apr 30, 2019, 11:30 AM

saying that by 2020 there will be 43 bowl games.

43 bowl games = 86 bowl teams. As of 2018 there are 130 FBS football teams.

66.2% of them will play in bowls in 2020. My guess is that about 1/4 of those bowls will be forced to take 5-7 teams

For those wondering if they'll 'start' taking teams with

Apr 30, 2019, 12:31 PM

losing records...from Wiki concerning the 2018 bowl season...

"The total of 40 team-competitive bowls, including the national championship game, was unchanged from the previous year. To fill the 78 available bowl slots, a total of 10 teams (13% of all participants) with non-winning records (6–6) were invited to bowl games. This was the second consecutive year, and only the third time in eight years, that no teams with losing seasons (6–7 or 5–7) were invited to fill available bowl berths."

This has been going on for a while. Bowls aren't about rewarding a decent season anymore, and haven't been for years. It's about grabbing the entertainment dollar for the cities, the schools, and the sponsors. Hell, let's just send everybody to a bowl and be done with it. Doesn't matter if there's only 100 people in the stands or the teams couldn't beat there way out of a wet paper bag. Nobody seems to care about that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

As for me, I'm cool with more football to watch

Apr 30, 2019, 1:04 PM

The chance of a game between two teams who had crappy seasons being entertaining is infinitely higher than if that game was never played.

I see a potential upside (more football for me to watch) and no real downside.

I don't watch most of those teams during the regular season. I doubt seriously I'm going to set my DVR for Central Mich vs UAB, or worse.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Apr 30, 2019, 1:32 PM [ in reply to No offense, but therein lies the problem. We live in a ]

But I might agree with your point if the potentially crappy game somehow diminished the more likely better games. It doesn't. The Southwestern Ohio Lawndart Bowl does nothing to diminish the Orange or Fiesta (etc).

All it does is provide more football with the potential of it being a good game, and honestly I'm just not sure what your perceived downside is.

In your analogy, those crappy things you list are only potential negatives if they replace the good things or make them rarer or fool people into thinking they are on the same "level" of quality.

No one confuses these bowl games with the big boys of bowl season. No one thinks that a 6-6 team that made the Northern Nevada Sandsnake Bowl had the same sort of season that a team which made the Cotton or Rose bowls did.

Again, I just fail to see the downside here.

Re: None taken

Apr 30, 2019, 4:33 PM

Rewarding lousy football teams for having bad seasons. These type of bowls fall into the “participation trophy” category for me. A sign of our snowflake times.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is one way to look at it

May 1, 2019, 9:30 AM

Another is that folks/cities/stadiums are investing their money and time in the hopes of putting on a profitable football game, and the players are out there trying to entertain.

If no one watches and no one goes, then the bowl will die off.

But it won't be because of some snowflake participation trophy trope that seems entirely misplaced to me.

Again, I'm just not seeing this societal downside that y'all are harping about.

Ya'll are missing the point. It's not about having 43 bowl games and a 5-7 team.

It's that the dang bowl is located north of the Mason Dixon in a town that NO ONE cares about college football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who wants to go to Boston in December?

Apr 30, 2019, 4:25 PM

They've got to stop having bowl games outdoors in cold climates. And yes, I know it's cold in Charlotte and Nashville, etc. during bowl season, but it's not that cold. Going to a bowl is supposed to be a reward, not punishment.

I have done the behind scenes tour at Fenway. The locker rooms are tiny for even a MLB baseball team. I am not sure where an 85 man football team would dress for the game without bringing in mobile units, which would have to be parked in the street because there would be no where else to put them. The logistics of that would be a huge pain in the but.
