Peleliu Flag - a closure look - picture taken today

Nov 13, 2021, 6:18 PM
PeleliuFlag.jpg(119.1 K)

This is the flag my grandfather took from a Japanese soldier after hand to hand combat in Peleliu. It has been professionally framed and sealed to prevent deterioration of the flag. I have heard that the writing is the names of family (wishing the soldier well) but I cannot confirm as I do not read Japanese.

Edit to say most people do not think this is real when they see it. The matte covering over the flag make it look like a "print". They are very surprised to know it is real.

Here is an interesting twist for you...

Nov 13, 2021, 9:21 PM [ in reply to Seems like I saw something similar like that ]

My dad, on leave in Japan while he was in Vietnam, met a Japanese lady and they got married... this is after he and my mom divorced. My grandfather and my dad did not get along so well after that... like, at all. (imagine that) But, my little brother is born - his mom being the Japanese lady... who was disowned by her family as well. My little brother, his son is the keeper of the flag now. With a Japanese heritage himself, he will never let it go.

Edit:
The first time I met my brothers' mom she was startled by how much I looked like my dad. lol. My brother has tried to get her to translate the writing on the flag but she just says it is names. My brother does not think she is being completely honest about what is written...at any rate, she is reluctant to translate for us. I will see her again Thanksgiving and gie it a try again.

Japanese is weird.

Each kanji is a syllable (or possibly multiple syllables) and it can be different syllables based on context.

The problem is, with proper names, there is no context.

So there is no simple way for someone to translate the name without knowing it already.

With a 3 kanji name (meaning 3 syllables or more), it could be 10 different legitimate names with 2 or 3 being common and the rest being uncommon but still possible.

Looking at the flag, with that many characters for each name, it's probably first and last name with the last name first (closer to the sun in the middle). For example, near the bottom right, there are 2 vertical names with the first two characters the same. That's probably a last name the two people share.

and on the far left the extremely dark one in the middle that has a kanji made of 3 characters together that kind of look like trees closest to the sun could be "Mori"

That's awesome! Thanks for sharing. It's one thing to read history and another altogether to see it.
